Please help! We've had a housesitter for the past two months. Well, my husband stopped by the house today to check on things and what does he find? Cigarette butts all over the kitchen and in the sink. Yuck! We had a strick no-smoking policy, but I guess that didn't mean anything to the guy. The house stinks! Needless to say, our housesitter is on the way out and we'll be moving back in this week.

So...how do I get rid of the stink? I'd like to avoid chemical air fresheners. I'll light candles for the air, but what if the couch stinks? How could it not? Yuck. I hate, hate, hate cigarette smoke!

Thanks in advance!

By the way, please don't be offended if you smoke! You can still come visit me- just don't smoke in my house!

well toss those windows open and you'll have to wash all your curtains..and sometimes even after a good washing they will still need aired out outside..after washing them spray a little lavender linen spray on them then hang out to air out.

I'd say if you can afford to steam clean your couch..do so and also if you can set it outside to air for a day(if it is cloth) do so.

If just leather..a good wipe down will do.

If you have ceiling fans you'll probably need to wipe those down as nicotine does tend to travel up towards a ceiling...blecckkk

I'd say if you have an a/c change your filters.
You can get the air filter scent things for an immediate solution..although of course it is pretty strong scented and not all natural.

Me, I hate cig smoke smell too, and if it was my house..I
'd be all over it with the Febreze..even though Febreze is a chemical..ha.
But I hate cig smoke too.

If the smell and nicotine has gotten onto wood panelled walls you can always do a wash down with Murphy's Oil Soap.

Anyhow...best of wishes. And fresher air to you soon.

Fabric Softener sheets absorb the smoke smell. Put them everywhere.

Usually charcoal will help absorb odors as well. I saw a thing at the hardware store the other day, it's a solid in a plastic container. It's supposed to get rid of all smell. A little pricey. I haven't tried it yet....

Depending on how bad it is, I think you are going to have to wash down all walls, clean any carpets and upholstered furniture. The smell is going to stick in any porous material- so I suggest targeting those and the walls first and foremost.

I was planning to do a massive clutter-reduction this month, anyway. I guess now I'll be even more motivated to clean everything out!

Thanks for your advice, ladies!
