Hi Farmgirls!
(I'm filling in for Sara for this thread and I've got big shoes to fill! xo )
Chamomile is our beautiful herb of the year for 2025!
For new FarmGirls; each year we celebrate our FarmGirl Jubilee and MaryJane's birthday in May. Some of us plant the Herb of the Year or a rose in celebration. Sara has usually posted announcement of the Herb of the Year early so those who wish to plant it can add it to their garden shopping list.
Sooooo... please be sure to post recipes and other uses for our beautiful chamomile and post pictures for inspiration for all to share.
Happy Jubliee celebrations!

Chamomile is an herb from the Asteraceae family, known for its daisy-like flowers. It has two common varieties: German chamomile and Roman chamomile. Chamomile is widely used for its potential health benefits, including:
Promoting relaxation and sleep: Chamomile tea is often consumed to help with insomnia and anxiety.
Digestive health: It may aid in digestion and relieve stomach discomfort.
Anti-inflammatory properties: Chamomile has been noted for its anti-inflammatory effects, which can help with conditions like menstrual pain.
Skin health: Chamomile is used in various cosmetic products for its soothing properties.
While chamomile is generally safe, it may cause allergic reactions in some individuals, especially those allergic to plants in the Asteraceae family. For more detailed information, you can refer to sources like WebMD or contact your Dr.

Love this herb! I had several lush plants going - until the gopher found them. I am rebuilding all of my beds with gopher proofing and building out a large scale tea garden. My sister has an inn and started doing tea parties. I've been growing several tea herbs and giving them as gifts, but gonna try my hand at small scale "commercial" teas for her inn. Gotta have chamomile!! being in the south though I have to do a more heat tolerant variety, but finally found some good seeds from a see producer in the south. Looking forward to seeing them grow!!
Rea - thank you for the lovely tea recipe! I will test it out.

Shennandoah, your tea garden sounds amazing. I'm sorry the gophers got to your garden, we had that problem when we lived in the Portland area, I surely don't miss that. I just started growing some tea herbs and am looking forward to experimenting with some basics and possibly building on that here at home. I do love tea. Please continue to share your tea adventure with us! Wishing you the best of luck with going commericial!

Chamomile Lemon Poppy Seed Breakfast Bread
2 tea bags Chamomile tea ½ cup water 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup granulated sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon salt 1 large egg lightly beaten ½ cup milk ¼ cup light olive oil Juice and zest of 1 large lemon 1 tablespoon poppy seeds ½ teaspoon almond extract
Instructions Preheat oven to 350° F. Pour ½ cup boiling water into a bowl. Add 2 tea bags and steep until brewed and cooled. Discard bags and set tea aside. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Form a well in center and set aside. In a medium bowl, combine egg, milk, olive oil, lemon juice, zest, poppy seeds and brewed tea. Pour into flour mixture and stir just until moist and combined. Pour batter into a greased 8x4x3-inch loaf pan. Bake 50-60 minutes, until top is lightly browned and toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. If serving immediately, cool on a wire rack for 30 minutes before slicing. If refrigerating overnight, cool completely on rack and store covered in fridge; slice before serving.
