I was going through the badge requirements and realized I can apply for my "Putting Away for Winter" badges as well. The one requirement for the beginner level is to share about freezing produce with the HenHouse. The primary produce we have frozen this year has been fruit. We have frozen both strawberries and blueberries so far this year. Both of these fruits we "flash froze" individually on bar pans, and then put them in freezer bags. The other thing we have frozen quite a bit of is tomatoes. Tomatoes are one of those vegetables that I will wash off, and then throw directly in the freezer. When I am ready to use them, I just pull them out of the freezer and throw them in the colander. As they defrost, all the excess moisture drains out, and the skins peel right off. A lot of times I will dehydrate the skins and then pulverize them and put them in a jar. These pulverized skin can be mixed with water to make tomato paste. |

I am putting in for my expert level on canning and realized I needed to post on here for that one too (hopefully you guys are not getting too tired of me posting). The expert level is about canning food. We do quite a bit of canning throughout the year, especially broths, fruit preserves and syrups, tomatoes, and beans. I actually have a blog post about canning my dried beans - http://hudson-everydayblessings.blogspot.com/2013/05/canning-dried-beans.html - though I have heard that cooking them first is actually better for you. I might try it... Anyways, I frequently water bath and pressure can, but have not yet tried oven canning. Have any of you tried it??? |

Shannon, post away! :) I haven't done any oven canning, and it's been a while since I've even pressure canned. I mostly just water bath, and freeze. I bought a dehydrator from a thrift store a couple years ago, but I still have no idea if it works. |

So is anyone else working on a badge right now? I need to work more on my gratitude letters, as well as some of the stitching ones. I have started the bee one, but need to plant some bee loving flowers and plants. With it being so hot here, I'm not thinking now iis the time... maybe in a few weeks... |

I need to go through and see what I can apply for again. Should we start another one together do you think? Or should we wait until we finish the gratitude badge? I sort of like the idea of starting them together, and at least earning beginner level as a group, and then doing the rest on our own, but I'm ok with finishing them together too. Any thoughts? |

Personally, I would love to start a new one... I like starting new projects, lol. And that would allow people to finish them at their own pace, without feeling rushed. What were you thinking about starting? I have received or put in for:
Shopping Green - Beginner Green Energy - Beginner Recycling - Beginner My Fair Farmgirl - Beginner and Intermediate Community Service - Beginner, Intermediate, Expert Lend a Hand to Farm Families - Beginner Farmgirl Gratitude - Beginner Bee Good to your Mother Earth - Beginner Gaining Ground - Beginner Backyard Farmer - Beginner Heirlooms Forever! - Beginner, Intermediate, Expert What's Your Beef? - Beginner, Intermediate, Expert Horse Dreams - Beginner, Intermediate Birds - Beginner Herbs - Beginner, Intermediate, Expert Weather - Beginner, Intermediate Putting Away for Winter - Beginner, Intermediate, Expert Rootin Tootin - Beginner, Intermediate, Expert
With Christmas coming, I will probably start focusing more on the Farm Kitchen and Stitching badges, as that is where I will be working anyways, but would love to start a project with everyone!!! |

So, I've been thinking about a badge we can do together. I have a couple ideas, and I'll ask for some feedback soon. For now, I wanted to show you how I'm displaying my badges. I posted this under Stitching and Crafting // UFO's, but I thought I'd share it here too. I bought this canvas bag at Hobby Lobby this summer and I've been adding my completed badges to it.

Erin - LOVE that idea!!! I may have to "steal" your idea!!! Right now I have no clue how to display my badges, so that seems to be a perfect solution! |

Shannon - some things do. I clicked on the link and it told me this item doesn't ship to Canada :( I will see if I can find another one that will. Erin - how did you attach them? Did you transfer the pattern straight onto the tote and then stitched it by hand, or did you print it on material, hand embroider, and then stitch to the bag? |

well boo! Let us know if you find one! I wonder if you can order from Hobby Lobby and have it sent there... Or if you find one you really want, maybe one of us could send it to you! |

I found one! It's not the same - it's just a regular canvas shopping bag - 14x10x5- but I think it will work! It was only $8.00 CDN plus shipping...so only came to $15CDN! |

I'm glad you guys like it! Steal away! :) Joyce, I printed the badges onto a neutral fabric, pretty much the same color as the bag, and embroidered it, then sewed it onto the bag. I'm glad you guys found bags to use! Post pictures once you get them going. |

Erin, I love your tote bag and display of badges! Also, I have so many totes and binders I love the idea of keeping my Wildflower and Cookbook binders in that tote!
I'm also interested in working on another badge together. Just have to finish up gratitude.
Love reading your posts anytime, Shannon! |

As I am new, I haven't earned any badges yet. So, any of them would work for me.
I am looking into aprons, families forever, forged food, carp-hen-try, farmgirl spirit, buttoned up and one of the plants ones at the moment.
But I am open to working on any and all of the badges. :0)

Shannon - I know... free time... it's hard to come by these days. I was thinking My Fair Farmgirl... I saw you did that one already, but I thought it might be fun to work on that one and also do a sort of beauty products recipe exchange. There were a couple others... but I don't have my list in front of me. |

I've been doing some catch up reading in the Henhouse! You girls are so much fun :) I just recently applied for my first badges and so far I have:
Cleaning Up/Recycling Beginner and Interm. Farmgirl Grammar Beginner Bread Making Beg, Int and Expert Get it Together Beg, Int and Expert Recipes Beg and Int Let's Get Physical Beg, Int and Expert Unprocessed Kitchen Beg Wild Game Beg and Int Crochet Beg and Int Embroidery Beginner
I need to sit down and go through my binder and see if I have finished any more that I can apply for and see if there are a couple I can work on to apply for in November. I would love to work on a group effort for more badges! |
