I seem to go in spells with the badges....sometimes doing a bunch at one time and then not for awhile. Right now I have a bunch to apply for but just haven't taken the time to do it. I LOVE the idea of the monthly challenges and need to get back into a routine of working on them. I have a bunch right now that I need to apply for but just haven't had the time to sit down and do it. Sometimes when I can't sleep I lay awake "composing" my badge applications...haha! And then when I get too many that need to be applied for and my mind won't stop spinning, I know it's time to get it done so I won't lay awake at night driving myself crazy!
I thought I had everything to make yogurt and buttermilk but I'm wondering if I do...I've been reading MJ's Milkcow book and it says to use a "floating dairy thermometer"? Do you know if that's necessary???

I am sick, Debbie. My computer crashed with no warning, and everything was in icloud, backed up, except from 2014 to present for pictures. I'm sending it off to apple to see if they can repair it - it will cost between $300 and $1300 :(

Hmmmm, I don't know Debbie. I use a different thermometer. I love making yogurt and buttermilk. Sometimes I feel a bit stressed and overwhelmed trying to keep up with doing the badges. I think I should just make a goal of doing one a month. I would love to do more, but I don't want to not enjoy the process.

Interesting, Christine! I have a yogurt maker that was given to me, so I just use that one. Would love to have the crockpot yogurt recipe though!

Debbie - just wanted to let you know you're BakeOver swap will be going in the mail in the next few days. I sewed it wrong, so I had to re-do it :/ but it's almost done (just the handles) and it will be on it's way - finally!! Thank you for your patience :)

Joyce - did you ever et yours from me? You ever commented... I had assumed you had, but hadn't heard anything, so am now starting to wonder...

Things here are ROUGH! There was a wildfire Monday night... around 200 acres burnt. We were preparing to evacuate, but thankfully didn't have to! The fire trucks were sitting right on the edge of our property! Then yesterday we got hit with a massive storm... it wrapped the shingles and tar paper off our roof and caused massive rain damage :'( A claim with insurance was filed today. To top it off, my parents showed up Monday and left today, and my aunt and uncle got here yesterday and are leaving in two weeks. I am stressed BAD!!! On Friday I have my US to find out what gender the baby is, so at least there is something to look forward to :)

No, I haven't received it yet, Shannon. When did you mail it?

I'm so confused about a part one part of the bakeover - maybe Debbie or Shannon can help me? When you place the two pieces perpendicular, I understand you sew it so there is a rectangle for the stability board. But what happens to the two edges of the long piece? Are they sewn anywhere, or are they folded? The short pieces, I understand, are the handles. Thanks for the help :)

Ok, I found it! I'm thinking that the longer sides just fold into the center to cover the takeover pan and then the shorter sides with handles come up over top of that?

Oh thank you Debbie!! I've been agonizing and thinking where did I go wrong! For some reason in the picture it looks like it is all sewed. But, if they just fold into the center I can see that would be more convenient as you can then adjust to the size of the pan. Thank you for your help! Just have to put the handles on and it will be in the mail :)

Joyce and Debbie:

Here's the recipe! Let me know how it turns out should you decide to make it!

Here goes:

INGREDIENTS:
˝ gallon whole milk
˝ cup plain yogurt made with the live and active cultures. (I flavor my own yogurt in the bowl. Meaning that I make plain and then once it is in the bowl to eat, I add fruits, sugar, vanilla, etc. Whatever I feel like eating at the moment. Also, I add granola sometimes. Grapenuts cereal is a fantastic additive!)
1-2 Cups of dry milk. This is optional….you may or may not need to add this. I usually do though. It adds to the thickness of the yogurt

Instructions:
1. Pour the entire gallon of milk into your crockpot.
2. Cook on LOW for 2 ˝ hours. It should reach 180*F. (I never check the temp, as my crockpot is pretty accurate. I think I checked it the first 2x, then never again)
3. Turn off your slow cooker and let the milk sit for another 3 hours. Keep the lid on.
4. Take out 2 cups of the milk and mix it with the ˝ cup plain yogurt. Whisk it.
5. If adding the dry milk, now is the time to do it. Whisk it in as well.
6. Combine this mixture in to the milk in the slow cooker and whisk it all together until it is smooth.
7. Turn the light on in your oven.
8. I take a beach towel and wrap the entire crockpot in it.
9. Insert the toweled crockpot into your oven, all while leaving the oven light on. (The oven light provides warmth for your cultures)
10. Leave in the oven for 8-12 hours.
11. Take it out after the above time, and enjoy.

I put it into large mason jars and refrigerate it. I add the sugar, vanilla, fruit, etc once I’m ready to eat it in the bowl.
**Before putting it into jars, just remember to save ˝ of it separately to use as your starter for the next batch.

Enjoy! Hope it turns out well for you should you decide to try it!

Do you get yogurt from the store? Also, I'm hoping to use my fresh cow milk, but she hasn't had her calf yet. As soon as we start milking her, I will be trying this!

Hope this helps :)

Christine, thank you!!! I'm going to pick up some milk tonight when I run into town and make this tomorrow. Do you use regular plain yogurt or greek style? Also, about how much does it make? So excited to try this!

I think I'm going to try that too Christine. Thanks for sharing! I made my own yogurt years ago with starter from Cultures For Health. It's been quite a while though since I've had any yogurt, store-bought or homemade.

Shannon I'm sorry things are so rough for you right now. Did you find out if you're having a boy or a girl?
