Kathleen - that's what we are here for - to listen :) I do hope things are going better for you.

Shannon - great to hear from you! Thrilled you have internet - not thrilled to hear you are all still sick. Hope you all feel better soon!

Katherine and Shannon, I feel for you and your trials with the neighbors. Is it maybe the heat of Summer that brings out the crazies in people. Sigh. Take care of yourselves, ladies.
Sabrina and Shannon, I can't imagine having DH gone for extended periods of time. I know a lot of women who experienced this, and they seem to handle it well like you two. At least, you appear to on the outside to us civilians.

DH left on a bicycle trip around Lake Superior many years ago. He was only gone 3 weeks. I gained 15 lbs. Whoops! You can see how I handled it.

Oh. My. Goodness. My internet has been out since Monday! I'm still not convinced it's back for good, since it just popped back on without a tech out here or anything, but I thought I better hop on and let you girls know I haven't just abandoned MJF. I just couldn't get online. My wifi also makes the phone work so that's been out a week too, and I don't have a cell phone. It's been interesting... but I got a lot done this week without the world wide web distracting me! I also got a lot of farmgirl mail! Thank you Joyce for the lovely anniversary card! It gave me warm fuzzies... also the postcard, you were right, I did enjoy it! :) Judith, thank you for the tea and catnip project! We just recently have a cat that followed my husband home when he was running, and now it lives on my porch. I'll definitely make good use of that! SO glad to be back. I hope it lasts! :)

Time to catch up with you all.....
Sabrina, where did your husband go?
Shannon, hope you are feel better. Glad you are settled into your new home and away from the crazy person.
Joyce, thank you for the post-card. that was so thoughtful of you to send it.
Judith, I received your package on Saturday, what a nice surprise! Love the catnip mouse, think I will put it at the top of my winter craft "to d0" list.
Erin, Glad you got your internet back. I had a similar issue with mine while hubby was in CA. My phone also depends on the internet, so I didn't have that or tv either. We do not have cable for tv, and depend on the internet connection for watching the "smart" tv...hulu, amazon, etc.

Today we start working on the guest room, we have been using it as a "junk room" but now my daughter who lives in FL is coming to stay with us for a few months and I need the room for her.

Today we empty it....and try to figure out where to put everything. Isn't it amazing how stuff accummulates?
Then we will be painting and refinishing the floor. With a bit of luck it will be ready for her when she arrives probably on Sunday.

We are sending her a big surprise tomorrow. She thinks I am flying down to spend a day in FL and then drive back to CT with her, for a bit of mother and me time. I told her to meet me at the baggage pick up at the Tampa airport.

In fact, I am not going. We are sending her son down to spend some time with her. Her son is the grandson who lives with us. So when she gets into the airport, and is looking for me, she will find her boy. He is so excited about surprising her. He is hoping to be able to get someone to video the reunion on his phone...

This will be happening tomorrow... I hope he is able to get it on video.

Time to get to work. Have a great day!

How FUN! I do hope you'll be able to share the video with us Kathleen - I'm just smiling thinking of the surprise :)

I have a crazy big to do list it seems...I don't know how I'm going to get everything done by the end of summer! Plunking away slowly at it...today I canned Apple Rhubarb Butter, Blackberry Pie Filling and Baking Blackberries. Next will be Peaches when they come in season...and then apples and beans...and then I'm done for canning. Right now I'm going out to do some gardening while the weather is fairly cool today.

Thanks Marilyn :) My garden actually isn't faring that well in all this heat - but I had a lovely neighbour give me all her rhubarb in exchange for me watching her garden for 3 weeks while she was away - and we went blackberry picking on Saturday in a local public spot...we find ways! We do have our very own apple tree that is growing beautiful apples though :)

Erin - isn't it funny how you get a new perspective when the internet doesn't work!?!? Unfortunately, since ours has been connected again, I seem to spend quite a bit of time on here. Of course, honestly, I have been so sick, that I really do not feel like doing much of anything else. But seriously, I have an addiction to the internet that I need to work on. I spend way to much time on here!

Kathleen - oh I so hope the surprise went beautifully! What a sweet and special thing to do!!! LOVE it!!!

Judith - i know I never handle having hubby gone very well... but we survive :) The first week is usually the hardest for us - and then by the second week we get into a good groove. There are times where when he comes home, it is actually difficult to adjust to him being home - we are always thrilled to have him here, but the flow of things changes. I am looking forward to retirement :)

Joyce - your canning expeditions sound lovely! I did manage to get blueberry syrup made and canned this past weekend, in between multiple resting breaks. We went to a local u-pick farm to get the blueberries. We picked 3 gallons worth, which is only about half of what we normally pick, but I just could not handle it with how I was feeling. Peaches are next here as well, as it doesn't look like we are going to get many more tomatoes due to the extreme heat. I am hoping to pick some up from the state farmer's market in the fall though. After peaches will be apples :)

Don't know if this is going to work.... I am trying to imbed the video....it was awesome! She was so focused on finding me that she walked right past him!

Here's a selfie from them following the reunion.

They have seen each other for only a couple of days in the last 4 years so this was really special. He has been terrified to fly alone and so would find lots of reasons not to go to FL. She hasn't been able to afford the airfare.
It's amazing because this has been in the works for 3 weeks and Matthew usually cannot keep a secret. This time he didn't even tell his brother! Love my boy.

Update regarding the complaint against the rooster and goats.
We spoke with the zoning guy yesterday and learned that the person who made the complaint was not the kid next door! It was the old lady down the road. She doesn't like roosters apparently.
Anyway, worked out agreement. Rooster goes (which we were going to do anyway once he did his duty with the hens); The goats can stay!!! Yippee!!! as long as there are no further complaints. we did explain to him that the goats don't go out until 9 a.m. and are brought indoors by 7 p.m. Any noise they make during the day is accepted as not breaking any rules.

We have been searching for homestead property and have found one in the Berkshires area that may work for us. Just contacted the realtor and hope to go see it sometime this week.

The zucchini and summer squash are still producing! Today brings the total weight harvested to 80 pounds from 10 plants!
and there are still more squash growing. Harvested the first of 6 cabbages, which I have never grown before. It weighed 5 pounds. Lots of Blue Hubbard, Butternut and Acorn squash growing, and several pumpkins that are from plants that we found in the compost. Tomato plants are heavy with fruit, and even the cucumbers are doing well. Refrigerator pickles to make today.

The garden is amazing this year. The total area is not very big and every inch is either producing or helping to produce.
As I did last year, I water the garden with bucket-fulls of chicken poo tea. I also spread a 5lb bag of epsom salt throughout. And also, I added crushed egg shells to each tomato plant.

Thanks to all the rain we have been getting, I have needed to water the winter squash only yesterday. The remainder of the garden has been doing well with just rainfall.

Have a good day!

Kathleen - it sounds like your garden is doing absolutely phenomenal! Sadly ours has all but died - the heat and dryness here this year is excruciating! Glad to hear your goats can stay. I don't understand why a woman not liking roosters can determine whether you have them or not, unless they are against the zoning rules, but glad to know you had planned on not keeping him anyways.

I haven't quite figured out what I am going to get myself into today. I actually feel somewhat better, which is HUGE! I should probably spend some time straightening my house, as it has been sorely neglected over the last couple weeks with me being so ill.

Shannon I am glad to hear you are feeling better. Why don't you just take a day for yourself, sit back and just enjoy the children and connecting with the new one. The one thing about housework that is a certainty, it will still be there tomorrow. There are more important things to do sometimes.

Kathleen, love the picture of your daughter and her son! What a wonderful surprise.

I'm so jealous of all of the garden activity I'm hearing about. Our garden did not do well. I have a few paste tomatoes, not enough to can, so not sure what to do with those. We planted a lot this year, but the weird weather just totally killed it. I just spent some time on my herb garden this week, and some of that is ok. I have more sage than I know what to do with. I'm just feeling very discouraged about the lack of harvest this year. The only garden that did well was my fairy garden! Lol! :)

I haven't been on much this week, mostly because of the internet still acting weird. We just got our phone fixed yesterday. I will catch up on my recipes today or tomorrow. I apologize for my absence, but things seem to be somewhat back to normal with our wifi so I should be back for good now. :)

Erin - we will be hitting up the state farmer's market in the upcoming month or two to buy 25 pound boxes of tomatoes! We just did not get the produce this year! Our cherry tomatoes held on for awhile, but even those succumbed to the heat :( We have three tomato and three pepper plants in pots here at the new house. I am hoping they will produce, as we have flowers... just haven't seen a lot of bees around here though :( Need those pollinators! Our serrano pepper plant is already producing and seems to be doing fairly well. I have an overabundance of those, and need to dehydrate some more. I had wanted to make salsa, but with the lack of tomatoes, I do not see that happening ;)

Today, as long as hubby is able to get off early, we are headed to go peach picking. I am looking forward to, yet dreading the processing that will follow. We usually get between five and 6 bushels of peaches. Not sure we will be getting that many this year, as I do not have the energy to process that much! Our freezers are pretty full right now with me making meals to pt in there after Emi is born, so freezing a lot is not going to be an option. I need to figure out if we need more peach salsa or peach bbq sauce.

Mid September we will go apple picking. Looking forward to that, as it is always a fun excursion. Not sure how it will work though if Emi is not born until early September. I am kinda hoping she is born between the 15th and 23rd of this month.... Totally selfish of me.... but it would give us time to get settled, start school at a reasonable date, and get in a groove before the holidays hit.

Jason's dad has apple trees, so I think we're going over there next week to get some apples from him. It's early, but I guess they're ready. They'll have to sit in my fridge for a week before I can process them though. We're going on vacation the week after that. We're going to South Haven Michigan. We go every year with my mom, sister, and brother, with random people joining us on random days throughout the week. We always go blueberry picking while we're there, but we're going so much later this year, that I think we'll just have to buy the 10lb boxes they have. I'll be a little disappointed if that's the case. I'll just have to wait and see!

Thought I'd pop on to say hi quick! I'm really feeling the pressure for school this year. We're going on vacation on Saturday and I only have a week after that to have school ready to go. Jason and I can't even find time to decide on curriculum. I've already decided, I just want him to look at it before I order it. Yes, I know, I'm a last minute kind of girl.

Homeschool moms, I think that's Joyce and Shannon, what are you using this year? I've talked to Joyce a bit about this, but just curious! :) I really wanted to do Tapestry of Grace. I bought the Primer last year, and I was going to take the plunge for Year 1, but then I found Biblioplan, which seems very similar and significantly cheaper. Also with Biblioplan you can sub your own books for any recommended by them. We're also going to do First Language Lessons (well trained mind), and for math I think just Saxon. Those are the big changes for us this year. I also want to switch from Sing Song Latin to Prima Latina. Anyway... what are you guys doing for school? Have you started yet? PS starts today. One more thing I love about homeschooling! Lol! :)

We're starting August 31st :D As you know Erin, we are using Heart of Dakota. Just wondering what people would/are using for KG English?? We love a Charlotte Mason approach - but really struggle with trying to find something to teach the kids reading/writing. Would love some input :)

Excited to homeschool!! I'm curious about Tapestry of Grace...and Biblioplan!!
