Just wondering if anyone has a garden planned for this year yet? Last year I planned my garden on paper and it seemed to work well. Haven't started this year's but I am enlarging mine a bit.

Denise, I don't lay out my gardens on paper because I plant mostly in containers and I move them around as the sun and shade changes during the year. I do know what I am planting and have 12 herb plants coming the last of March and first of April. Also one yellow rose bush in March. I ordered the herbs in Jan and the rose bush this month. The few seeds I ordered have come.

There's a few herb and flower plants I will buy locally when Kelly's has them. I have already started placing containers where they will start out.

As soon as Dollar General puts out their garden things I will stock up on 8# bags of Miracle Grow. I no longer can lift large bags of potting soil and Dollar General is the only place in town that sells the small bags.

I grow mostly herbs - a few flowers and this year assorted baby greens. All in containers.

Sara,
I'll have to check out my dollar general for that. I do my starts in containers but then I transplant to the garden. I have never done any herbs. May try some this year though as I like to use fresh when cooking.

Denise I find growing herbs very rewarding. The ones I use in daily cooking I have on my deck out the kitchen door. The handier the better. The deck is also handy to Yellow Rose Cottage for drying herbs.

I have a small Garden most every year. I have a small raised bed off my patio about 8x8 and I do containers like Sara. I always plant Rosemary, Sage, Dill, Basil and Thyme. They are pretty plants and useful! I mix in flowers, marigolds to help with the bugs and tomato plants. I grew sugar snap beans one year in the raised bed. They did good for a small garden. That's the one thing I miss so much is having a big garden, and being able to stay outdoors more in the Summer.

Went to Dollar General this morning and bought 8 bags of 8qt Miracle Grow potting soil. After I rest awhile I hope to sow baby greens in two containers. One of assort baby Mustards & one seed pkg of baby Super Foods - assort greens. Rain forecasted for tomorrow so it should get seeds off to a good start.

Later I will have to make markers for each container so I can keep the greens straight because I move containers around as the sun changes during the season.

Denise, I have done Basil, which does good here in Georgia, but I have not had good luck with Cilantro :(! It does not like hot weather. Maybe if you start it early, you can have it for a good long time, and I'm sure it doesn't get as hot in NJ as it can here. I love Lemon Thyme, Pineapple Sage, well, most herbs :)!

Cilantro bolts in my part of Texas. I hear that same complaint from FarmGirls all over the country. I grew it last year because it was the National Herb of the Year but it didn't do well. I can buy it for 50 cents a large bunch at the grocery store so I won't be growing it.

I have 12 plants coming later part of March and first of April. Among the herb plants will be apple mint and pineapple mint. First time to grow the apple - grew pineapple mint years ago so excited to have it again.

Among my favorite herbs to grow are rosemary, thyme, sage, sweet marjoram, Greek oregano, Mexican oregano, chives, basil, lemon grass, spearmint, chocolate mint.

We have been clearing out our backyard flower beds that took a big hit with January's deep freezes. We planted a few things but we are supposed to have another freeze this week so it just might not be safe yet. February and now early March have lurched between cold and above average warm. While it brought Spring blooms out in full force, sensitive annuals could easily get zapped. We do have heart petunias down here that have survived the freezes and continue to do well. They, however, hate the heat so they will have to be pulled come June when it gets way to hot for them to stand. Last Summer, our backyard looked so pretty with all the flowers and we look forward to hopefully repeating that again this year. Together, we have raked and bagged over 40 bags of Live Oak leaves and dead branches etc. the past few weeks. I am glad most of that work is done and only a small bit left to tackle.

Yesterday I sowed one pot of chervil and it's on deck. One long container of sorrel and it's on east side of house.

I am going to start planting in pots; then maybe have Ed build a raised bed. There are 3 empty horse vitamin/mineral tubs in the yard and I am going to start with them. Need to get some plants soon for them. Only problem - making sure someone waters them while we are traveling. And traveling will soon be more often. Ed is going to retire soon. WOO HOO! My son and his family usually come over to feed the cat. I could always ask them to water the gardens. As an alternative - My neighbor is renting out her house to a granddaughter and her family. They have 3 children. Maybe one of them would water the plants to earn some money.

Any suggestions as to what are the best veggies for pots? One pot, for sure, will be herbs.

Do you eat the sorrel Sara?

Have a good time Linda.

Yes Darlene. There is a French sorrel soup I want to try. Have never eaten sorrel so will have to find out if I like it. I like trying new herbs.

Planted a small bed of yellow 4 O'clocks in front of YR Cottage today.

May go to Kelly's Fruit/Veg stand on Monday. If they have plants in I hope to get herbs and a few flowers. Ready for color in my yard and I saw a yellow butterfly today so it needs something to eat if it going to stick around.

Thinking about getting a hummingbird feeder. Haven't had one since I have been in Paris.

Wow my Azalea's are blooming beautiful red. We won't have a garden but my hubby bought a dehydrater and wants to do some pears. Pineapple, maybe some jerky. So I am kind of excited about it. Terry is trying to do a little bit everyday. So thank you for thoughts and prayers. So thankful.....

Lily June is so cute in her purple rain/garden boots.

Connie this is my time growing sorrel so I can only tell you what is on the package. It's a hardy perennial so I am hoping it will survive our winters. Since it is in a container I can move it to a sheltered spot come winter.

It has a lemony spinach flavor. High in V C.

Sow in early spring and then in late summer for a fall crop.

That's great, Sara! Thanks! I wanted to put them on the east side of my house where it gets the morning sun but is mostly shaded by my huge sycamore trees - so partial shade. I think that would work.
