Sorrel has sprouted!
Waiting on chervil to sprout.

Received the Republic of Texas yellow rose a couple of days ago and potted same day. Checked on it this morning and it's doing fine - no dropped leaves.

Sara Im' going to try sorrel and I love 4 O'clocks!! I had them in the flowerbed by my porch when I lived in the city. The Hummingbirds loved them!! I haven't been able to get them to grow in the country. I either have all sun or all shade! no in between!! So many trees. Not much good soil anywhere except raised beds.

We have a good size garden every year. Plus lots of flowers in hanging baskets and pots. Decided to cut back on some of the flowers this year. We'll see if that actually happens.

We have cut back on the vegetables though. It's just the two of us and we have a farm market 4 miles away.

The only blossoms we have right now are crocus. Won't be planting much for a couple of months yet. It's still to cold here. The four o'clock sound beautiful. Haven't grown them in quite a few years.

Linda, my kids took care of a neighbor's cat when he traveled. They loved it. He paid them well and would bring them little things from around the world. He is missed.

Never had sorrel. Sara it will be interesting to know how you like it.

Brenda,
We will put in just a small garden this year. Like you there is just the two of us and we also have a farm market close by.
We still have lots to do in the house so I don't want to have to many irons in the fire.

My yellow tulips are in full broom in their container. When they are spent I will take up the bulbs and keep to repot in the fall. I really like having tulips in a container. Lemon grass will take their place - lemon grass doesn't winter over here.

Sara,
I have always heard tulip bulbs have to freeze in order to bloom. Do you know? If so how do you plant them in a container and get them to bloom again in spring?

We just had a freeze warning at home so since I haven't been there to even start anything I suppose I shall get busy once I get home. It seems I can think of a million things I need to do when I am away.

Denise last fall I put 25 tulip bulbs in a 1 1/2' round container and wintered over on south side of house. Covered it with a screen and leaves to keep squirrels from digging them up. We had several nights of single digit temps. So the bulbs did freeze. When the green emerged I moved tulips to front yard.

I was planning on taking them up and saving to re-plant in the fall but after reading about what it takes to save the bulbs I have scraped that idea. In the fall I will order more yellow tulip bulbs or try to find them locally. I like them so much I will treat them as annuals.

Took the tulips up today and planted lemon grass in the container. Won't be long and the lemon grass will fill the container.

My grandmother's purple irises are in full bloom. The blooms are the size of my hand and a deep purple. I got my start in 1973 when her house was sold. I remember her irises from when I was a little girl in the 1940s. They bloom later than other irises. The white ones across the street have been gone for weeks.

Sara, we have the same issue down here with bulb flowers. They have to be kept in the fridge until Spring when you can put them in the ground to grow and bloom. If we leave them in the ground, the summer rains and heat rot those that the squirrels don't find and eat. I have given up trying to have them and just enjoy some from the grocery store during the Spring days.

While I was gone, the squirrels dug up most of my parsley that was growing and thriving. They hide acorns in the pots and then dig them up and leave the roots bare. GRRRR!!! Thankfully, the Rosemary is still good and I want to plant my Basil soon.

Here is my little garden I can handle. I have a few patio pots. This is that shelf I got free from Walmart Garden center. The Wisteria is just 3 years old. My Granny pruned her Wisteria into a tree! I am trying now to see if I can find a picture of it! There would be 100's of Bumblebees on it! The Farm down the road from us has a beekeeper that's why my flowers are finally doing better. They are widening the highway that leads to town so the Beekeeper had to move farther away.

Connie, That is a wonderful garden. We used to have wisteria at our other home and it was trimmed to look like a tree. Right now it is climbing all through the woods. It is so beautiful and smells wonderful too! I am looking forward to the honeysuckle along the fence in June. The aroma permeates everything!

Thanks Ya'll!

Denise! I agree!! Growing up a lot of our neighbors had Wisteria! We have honeysuckle all over the woods and right by the driveway so I can take a deep breath going to the mailbox!

My son's best friend (they met in nursery school) came in from North Carolina and visited with me for seven hours. They gave me a hydrangea for Mother's Day. It's called New Wine and is a deep reddish purple. As soon as the ground dries a little I will plant it in front flower bed that faces north and on east end of house. Should do good there.

If you want to check out the new color go to www.hanabayflowers.com

All my plants perked up after the soaking rain. We sure needed it.

That is a beautiful color! When we plant hydrangea here the soil determines the color due to the ph. The darkness of the color. We have had rain for the past 2 weeks and looking at another before it stops. Plus side everything is green!

Denise, I'll have to wait and see if it keeps that color. The card that came with it gave the ratio of peat moss to soil 2 to 1. I do hope it does stay true to the color.

Connie it's beautiful! Love the smell of honeysuckle. We sucked the nectar out when we were children. Tried it when I was grown and it was just as good. I have a small stand of it on my back fence. May gather a sprig of it for iced tea tomorrow for all times sake.
