New question: how many of you have ever taken a little stick and stirred the soft earth, where you saw a small cone shaped hole, all the while saying or singing, " Lady Bug, Lady Bug... Fly away home.
Your house is on fire and your children are alone! "
I saw two little cone shapes in the flower bed near my squash plants the other day and a part of me wanted to find a stick and stir. But the adult in me reminded me of my chores...So I just repeated the little rhyme in my head.

Doodlebugs! I haven't seen any of those little cone-shaped holes in a long time.

I think they were also called ant lions; we would find ants and drop them down and see if they got grabbed.

Marilyn, I have seen granny beads on children but I never knew the term for it. While we have lots of Lady Bugs down here, I have not ever seen those cone shaped holes in the ground. Wow, this topic of the country store has generated lots of old timey information tidbits. Can’t you just imagine people in the old store talking amongst themselves about these topics? So many conversational terms have been dropped over time but there are still remnants in various parts of our states.

We called them ant lotions when I was little in Colorado.
My dad had his shop in the back of the house and I would go out there and watch them pull ants down there cone.
That was fun, it has been years.

I don't recall ever seeing any ants around a cone, but once we got a doodle bug out and looked at it.
Sadly, most young people don't have a clue! Their world exists around them only.

We always said the ladybug rhyme,

Ladybug, ladybug fly away home,
your house is on fire, your children all gone
All except one, and that's little Ann,
for she crept under the frying pan

I have seen the little cone shaped mounds but I always thought they were ant hills.
I have seen inverted cone shaped holes where I thought chiggers lived but I guess they were doodlebugs.

"Doodle Bug, Doodle Bug, fly away home
Your house is on fire and your kids are all gone."

My grandfather had a tractor he used at his marina that was always known as the doodlebug in our family.

Sunday, when I went to pick wild plums at my daughter's farm, I remembered that this old building across from her property was once a small country store. It was owned by The Thomas family and they lived in a little house behind the store until they both passed away in the upper 90s just a few years ago. The building itself is in poor condition, but at one time it was a little stop off point for farmers that lived out there in the tiny agriculture community of LaCrosse, Florida.

Here is the faded sign to the right of the front door.

I don't know the details of this store except that it has been closed for decades. Did they send out dry cleaning for customers? Did they sell a few grocery items and possibly home and farm small stuff? I need to ask my son in law more details so I can share about this building. I wonder if anything is left inside besides who knows what that squeezed into the rotting boards?? I wonder what it was like back in it's day? I wonder if it was a little local gathering spot for customers? Ahhh, if only the walls could talk!!

Winnie,
I bet that little place was busy in its heyday. I like to think about what places were like and the people who went to them or lived in them.
