Hey Gals,
I am growing my hair a little longer these days and have decided to be at peace with all the gray. But the problem is the grays do not look or behave like the non-grays. I dislike putting heavy "product" in my hair, so is there anything natural I can rinse it in or maybe even put on dry that is light and/or natural so that the grays will be a little less Einstein-like??? Thanks!

If your hair is finer like mine now that I'm silver headed, always rinse hair with cool water. It helps. I too went gray last year. Vinegar is also a good rinse now and again. Wishing you many good hair days.

I too have gone grey over the past year. All natural. What do you suggest for a natural shampoo that brightens the gray? Lemon, vinegar? This is all new to me.

I got my first gray hair at 14, started coloring in my 20's, and continued until around 50. What a mistake! The best thing I ever did to my hair was to stop the chemical process. The skunk look lasted awhile, but the final removal of the dyed hair was awesome and I'm proud of my platinum hair.

You know what Amy, I have thought about that before. There was a L'Engle book, I think Dragon in the Water, that had a character who used tea to color her hair. I read that book when I was pretty young, but I always remembered that part of it for some reason. Probably because her hair was dark like mine.

Now that my hair is gray I just think of myself not as a "senior" but think of myself as an "experienced citizen".

Erin, since your hair is dark, there may be some natural alternatives to coloring. I know I read somewhere about tea rinse for hair coloring, it might have been on this forum somewhere. My hair is (was!) strawberry blonde so I never tried it. Might be worth looking into. :)

Happy Day!

Hmmm... I'm 32, and I've never colored my hair. Well, I had highlights ONCE in my early 20's. I've had some grays since high school, but since having kids the grays are coming in strong. I also have very dark hair. I mostly don't mind it, but I've also thought in the back of my head that I'd color it when I turn 35. Don't know why. It's just a number I thought sounded ok. I'm so on the fence about it because I have very long, very dark hair. It would be such a pain to keep up with. That's probably 50% of the reason I haven't done it yet. Now you all are making me reconsider ever dying my hair! Oh what to do....

I recently stopped coloring my hair too! I announced to the men in my office one morning that if they can have gray hair and still be respected, so can I! It is true that gray hair is coarser and drier plus my hair is also naturally curly so frizzies and dryness have always been an issue for me, especially in humid Florida. I try to shampoo as infrequently as I can get away with. I use a product called Kinky Curly shampoo, conditioner and leave in curl "custard" which really defines my curls and keeps them soft. They sell these products at Target in the African American hair products section but they work great on Caucasian hair too as long as you apply them sparingly. I absolutely love how so many of my farmgirl friends have declared Freedom From Hair Coloring - Long Live the GRAY HAIRS!

Arctic Blonde! Wonderful. Last time I was at the salon, my stylist and I were talking about how long it had been since I had colored and how all that was left was my natural hair. I said that I was very happy to NOT be dipping my head in toxic chemicals every 6 months and she about had a fit trying to shush me! ha ha ha "You're killing my business!" Better her business than my head.

I'm letting my hair go naturally grey after a few years of coloring it. I'm getting more compliments than I ever thought I would, which is very encouraging! It's beginning to look like it will be more white than grey, but time will tell. I have very spiralling curly hair that I stopped fighting awhile back, so now I'm a completely natural hair girl. What a relief!

"Arctic blonde" CeeJay, I love it. Been that way for quite a few years now. My hair was always straight and I stopped perming when it started breaking my hair off. Like you I notice a wave here or there, but mostly it just wants to flip on the ends.

First of all, I just wanna say that I call it "arctic blonde"! :D No gray hair on my head . . . (ha, ha)

I spent most of my life with very STRAIGHT hair and I permed it for many years. My last perm was 4 years ago . . . as it grew out and I got my hair trimmed I discovered that my hair was starting to come in with some of its own wave! I've been told that it CAN happen as your hair texture changes with the "arctic blonde" and it CAN be more wavy or curly.

I also never wanted my ears uncovered, but in the last couple years I'm really enjoying shorter, more wavy UNPERMED hair and, as folks at church say, with "more spunk". Most of my "Arctic blonde" is at my temples and along nape of my neck but it is mixed in all over. I've had more compliments on my hair in the last year that EVER in my life!! (I'm 66 years young!) YAY!

It has been just over a year since I quit coloring my hair. I used to wear it long (pigtail girl) and just didn't want to face that awkward "growing out the grey" time, so I cut it off short short short and then stopped coloring altogether. My stylist just about had a fit when I said "no more," but it really was a painless process. We spend most of the summer on our boat, so the short hair was a blessing, and the grow out period really was not an issue with the short hair. At this point, I am not even considering ever coloring again, because it's just so easy to get up and give my head a quick wash in the shower and then get out the door. My hair is actually softer now than it was before, and I don't feel the need to use all kinds of products on it. Ahhhhh, the joys of maturity!!!

Take it easy, but take it.

I buy henna from the eco store that blends the gray in and makes it soft. It is plant based and no chemicals. The nice thing is that because it is plant based and no chemicals you can store the bottle if it isn't used up. My hair is about 1/3 gray.

Give thanks to yourself everyday for all the wonderful things you do!

I'm glad that I checked out this thread. I have fine hair with some wave and it has gone from feeling healthy to feeling coated and coarse since my grays are coming in. I also wondered about meds, I take some daily. Thanks Connie for the tips!

I am using a shampoo & conditioner for gray hair that I order from Vitacost.com. It is called, Mill Creek Botanicals Fantastic Silver. It keeps my hair super soft and it is now all "silver". I get compliments all the time on it, especially from strangers.

Good luck finding a product that will help tame your free spirits!

My grays are coarser and wilder than the rest of my hair too. I haven't had to ever color my hair and now that I am nearly 56 I dont see the point in starting. I do feel that when my hair is really clean is when they stand out the most. Oh well. I like having long hair and I like it without gel or hairspray so I just deal with it. Glad I am not the only one.

Inside me there is a skinny girl crying to get out, but I can usually shut her up with cookies.

I have waist length hair and the top half has a lot of "white" hair in it. It is not grey but white. My hair is curly so it is unruly. I use Biologe on it.

Gray hair for the most part is course because of the missing pigments, but it also has to do with what kind of hair texture you had to begin with. The best thing for gray hair is to use a good shampoo and conditioner and you can get Redken Shades CLEAR applied at a salon. It smoothes the cuticle down and makes gray hair shine!!
If you color your hair at a salon, Redken is the best color you can get! I used it for 15 years in the Salon and still use it on my own hair.
The Best Salon shampoo for gray hair is Global Keratin and Redken. Bumble and Bumble Sunday shampoo, the very best Clairifer! cleans build up like medications and hard water minerals. If you take meds every day, you need to use a Clairifing Shampoo at least once a week. Taking an advil caplet will stay in your hair for 15 hours, so you can see if you take RX meds every day, Like I do, it can make your hair very coated and rough!

I had always also heard that as our hair grays it becomes more coarse. Mine, however, has grown in much more fine. Strange!

I too have long hair but have not colored it in years - I like calling my gray hair "Wisdom Highlights" :)
I have used coconut oil and even olive oil as a pre-conditioner that has helped calm down my curling locks.
That said I don't tend to worry to much about my natural volume - it is my hair and I love it.
Do hope you find something that works for you - you have been given some wonderful ideas.

I would do no poo, and add a good Carol's Daughter conditioner, and a Carol's Daughter palmade.

I have heard that a sage and water mixture sprayed on will take you back to natural color. Just google it.
