I have a vintage kitchen and use all my pretty little vintage things, including my 1930’s electric mixer. I rarely fall for “gadgets”, but my parents sent me an Air Fryer and I LOVE it. Can’t live without it. Then I went to a pot luck at a neighbor’s and everyone raved about the Instant Pot. Supposedly, it takes the place of the slow cooker, rice steamer, pressure cooker, etc.

So we found one (on sale, very good price) and so far I LOVE it. My favorite has been the Chicken Veggie Fried Rice I made this past week.

Do you have one? What is your favorite recipe? What do you like about it? Any dislikes or tricks when using? Do you take it camping?

YUM!

I have really been using it alot the last two months! OH MY! POT ROAST in 35 minutes - it was so juicy and delicious. I have made homemade refried beans and will never buy canned again! Chili, stew, dried beans - all come out perfect. It is crazy! I have never liked new “kitchen gadgets” but this one wins a blue ribbon by me!

I have a 5 qt Instant Pot that my DH bought me. His favorite thing I fix in it is BBQ. I will cook deer roasts until they fall apart. I pour the juice into a bowl and set aside. I pull the roasts apart with a fork and put it back into the IP. I add 1/2 cup of the juice. Then I put the BBQ sauce in, enough to cover the meat & put it on the slow cooker feature. If the slow cooker does not heat up as much as I want it to, I change the setting to high and then reduce it to low when it is hot enough. I cover with a glass lid. It does not last long as we eat what we want & give the rest away. I do put the juice in a jar in the fridge and use it when cooking something else.
I have cooked a beef roast & veggies. Then made gravy in it. You just have to find a recipe that sounds good & try it. I am looking forward to trying some of the recipes y'all have talked about. Thanks for sharing, ladies!

Marilyn -- We have the three quart size. It is perfect for the two of us. I don't know which version it is; it was the only three quart one available when we bought it. If you want I can post a picture.

Is anyone using the smaller (3 qt?) sized Instant Pot? If so any recommendations or suggestions for which version to buy? There seem to be several combinations of options available. I'm only cooking for myself these days so the regular sized one is way too big for me.

Cheers! ~ Marilyn

We recently tried a loaded baked potato soup recipe and it was really yummy. My husband even went back for seconds and that’s not like him. It paired really well with bundt bread. I will be making it again this weekend.

I use it several times a week for making rice,as my dog is also on a special diet and rice is something he has to eat everyday. It works great for that! I also have used the sauté part of the IP and it works well, too, and keeps everything in one pot. I have to say my favorite new recipe is the Chicken Fried RIce dish - the family keeps wanting it made. SO much healthier than the take out version.

I agree with Julie about the air fryer. I couldn’t live without that yet. I am going to try making Split Pea Soup in my IP, as a slow cooker. So far no complaints. It is easy to use, though I think it took some”playing” with it to figure it out and what the best cooking times are.

Any other good recipe suggestions?

I love our library.
They have wreath making, cooking demonstrations, brought in the Batmobile!, had a wolf come in, etc.
They are doing a class on elderberries coming up. Always something!
Don't know that they've had a feast like yours Grace!

Our local Library had a "Insta-pot cooking class" which was great... and... Our local library has several Insta-pots that can be borrowed/checked out for home use!!!

As for the class,, the lady giving the demonstration, had 5 insta-pots going and with in 1 hour we feasted!! (she had everything prepped at home,, just had to explain, toss in the ingredients and set the timers...

I still need to be a little more adventurous ....

I love my insta-pot so much I bought another one. I have the 6 qt. for much of my cooking, but I also have the small one for small batches of rice, mashed potatoes, etc. it is the perfect size for the 2 of us. My air fryer is my other beast friend. These girls proved how quick, easy and delicious we can get good, healthy meals on our table quickly during our busy harvest season. By the time the semi's were all emptied I could have supper done.

Nicole, what have you made so far in your instant pot? I have only used my slow cooker portion of the instant pot for 1 recipe and I felt it worked great, but I haven’t tried any of the long all day cooking ones.

Don't get rid of your crockpots/slow cookers too soon. I tried the slow cooking part of my instant pot and it doesn't get as hot as my crock pot and takes much longer.

SO far, I have not heard anyone say anything bad about them! I got the “Pioneer Woman” version which just means it is “purty” on the outside, and has an extra book of recipes. It replaces my broken pressure cooker, and now I have carried my crock pots to the basement storage. May be getting rid of them altogether. So what it does, Nini, is work as a slow cooker, but you can brown everything right in it, so you don’t have to cook the meat, etc. in a separate pan. It slow cooks. It steams rice and veggies, and makes fast stews, meats, etc. It is for “wet” foods like stews, soups, rice, pot roasts, beans, etc. SO far, I love it.

Anyone here take theirs glamping???

Thank you for all the tips, girls. I am loving all the possibilities and the recipes!

Nicole

Dried beans cook very well in the InstantPot; do the one-hour quick soak and about 15-20 minutes in the IP (time depends on bean variety).
It's fast, safe, and easy to use. We really like how it tenderizes game.

Thanks all for the encouragement. I love all types of dried beans, but they do take a long time to soak and cook. I'm with you, Barbara, I would like to try dried beans. Any tips??

I'm so glad you posted this, Nicole. I have been on the fence about buying an air fryer forever because I am just not sure it is going to work (would love to use it for fish during Lent, most of all). I also don't really understand what an instant pot is. IS it a pressure cooker? How does it differ? If it really is as easy to use and really does make good homecooked meals in a jiff, and if it's safe cooking, I am really interested!

I agree about being afraid of pressure cookers. I have had them blow up on me and spew things all over the ceiling. Pressure canning about made me have a nervous breakdown and I won't do it anymore---my veggies go in the freezer. But if these are safe---they sound great. Must be great for cooking dried beans---RIGHT???

Anne -- there used to be three things I was afraid of: rattlesnakes, lye, and pressure cookers. Nancy is right; InstantPot is as easy and safe to use as your crock pot or coffee maker. I'm still afraid of rattlesnakes though.

Hi Anne,
The IP is not your grandma's pressure cooker. It is so much easier. Find a recipe you would like on You Tube. I suggest Six Sisters channel. Take a step out on faith, have fun. I know you will do great!
