Kim Wingert, (kiminca, #2164) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning a beginner level Buttoned Up badge.
"I gathered all of the buttons stashed all over the house, organized them and put them into jars. Over the last decade I inherited my great aunt's sewing supplies, and my grandmother's bag of buttons. I remembered that when we moved into our house when I was in high school my mom had found a cloth bag of buttons in her closet--so I asked her if she still had them. She was more than happy to give them to me.
I spent hours pouring over the buttons. Especially my grandmother's buttons were a joy for me. I found leftover buttons from clothing she had made for me when I was a little girl, and even a leftover cloth button that she had covered for my wedding rehearsal outfit. Others I knew must have been cut off her grandmother's mourning dress still on the black fabric. It turned out to be very special. Meanwhile, anticipating the expert level, I can't find a rubber button--but my mom is on it, she is sure she has one somewhere! We are all taking this rubber button on as a treasure hunt!"

"I started this 3 years ago when I was searching for my Native American roots. I interviewed my grandfather over the course of a year before he passed away. I kept a notebook of questions and conversations. Since then I have interviewed numerous family members and have more on my list to interview. For the last year or so I have been using Ancestry.com and many other online recourses as well as The Northern Ny and Canadian Genealogical Society to further my research. Currently (and I mean currently as in right this very minute), I am sitting amidst piles of documents, letters etc entering data into a family tree database to be able to print out a story of each family line to share. I also have done family research for others. If anyone needs any help I would be glad to.
I have learned so much about my family history and saved so many wonderful stories of my grandfathers. I have also met many distant relatives from all over. I even met a cousin from California who flew out here to NY to meet me! I also found out I am related to Celine Dion!"

"I bought a plastic case to store crafting items and filled it with my basic sewing supplies plus a few other favorite sewing items and my latest purchase of fabric, Dr. Seuss prints.
Great, it will be wonderful to have when I get together with friends for quilting and going to retreats. My pincushion turned out great, I found a simple pattern online that used 15 2-inch squares and an old button from my button collection."

"I was planning to teach my niece, Kate, how to use her sewing machine this past Saturday. She is a new member of the Sisterhood, and she was anxious to learn the skills she needed to complete badges!
She was the perfect person to give the sewing kit to! I had seen MaryJane's version in her Ideabook, and wanted to recreate one. I filled a mason jar with all kinds of sewing notions and buttons from my own collection.
Making the pincushion top was a little more difficult than I thought it would be. In hindsight I wish I would have used a wide-mouth mason jar.
My niece loved it! It was a perfect start to a wonderful day of sewing!"

"I had always wanted to sew my own apron. I've purchased some, while others have been passed down to me.
I used a vintage Simplicity pattern and found fabric that reminded me of old feedsack fabric.
I had a sewing partner who was working on her own apron, so I was really excited to start working. I thought that I would be able to finish the apron in just a few hours. But with all the laughing, chatting, and silly mistakes, we finally finished after about 5 hours!
I have to adjust the length of the apron, it comes down to mid-shin.. a little bit long for me!! Other than that, I can't wait to wear it out!"

"I collected 5 reusable shopping bags. I bought several very large ones from a warehouse grocery store, one medium sized one from a Meijer store, and two from a dollar store that were very pretty. The last bag of the required six, I made. I made it by cutting the bottom out of a poly plastic dog food bag. My mother in-law helped to stitch the bottom up flat and to stitch on heavy handles.
I love the bags! The one I made from the dog food bag is greatfor cold food because it is more waterproof. I also like it because of it's "quirkiness"! The only problem with reusable bags is getting the store clerks to pack them instead of the plastic bags. I imagine that it will become easier since I am a regular atvery few stores, and the cashiers will learn!" |

"Crochet is not my strong suit. I had made simple things but I made a large scarf modeled after the Final Fantasy X character Riku Scarf. It had a few color changes which were a new experience. In teaching someone else to crochet, I sat my dear husband down. We got him to master the single crochet and the double crochet.

"This past Christmas I decided to have an ocean theme for the holiday. I made sea shell ornaments for the tree and a mermaid topper. Our wreath for the door I made with some shells and starfish. I made felted scarves for all the ladies as well as "beachy" anklets.
I was pleasantly surprised at the reaction to my home made gifts. People were actually touched that I had taken the time to make them something. The Christmas tree was ahit - especially my mermaid topper!" |

"I have loved horses for the past 20 years, and when our sons were growing up we got into horses had 12 at one time and loved to go riding.
We then sold all of them as the boys were going through stages in life on the farm from horses, snowmobiles, dirt bikes, pickups, cars and more and got away from them.
I have wanted horses for the past few years and a friend knew someone who had a few for sale so we went and looked at them and then wouldn't you know, I ended up buying them both!
After I purchased these two horses last fall they needed more work than I realized that I had time for with me working in the summer thru fall on our family farm operation so I just sold them month ago to a neighbor for her daughter and there college friend. What a blessing and fun to see them when I go for a visit."

"When a few of us couples went out to Medora, ND for a few day get away of course I always have a camera or two on hand with me and luv to take pictures so when we got back home from hikin on some trails, seeing a outdoors musical, having supper outside overlooking the ND Buttes I came home and made a 6 x 7 scrapbook for all 3 of us couples.
The scrapbooks turned out amazing and the other gals and there husbands just loved them. Filled with lots of memories to cherish in years ahead." |

"One of my dreams is to start a photography business from our farm home as I really do enjoy taking pictures, reading photography books, learning the software programs, attending seminars and online photography classes as well.
I've been working hard at my photography for the past months/years and just decided to get more series with it this year.
I have taken wedding pictures for one of our son's friends wedding and I took photos from their rehearsal, to girls getting ready, breakfast, and the whole works. It was amazing and I really had a lot of fun.
I enjoy taking pics of children, farm animals, barns, and country stuff as well.
I can visualize my dream in the near future as I work harder and harder each day."

"I felted a bunch of old 100% wool sweaters for a different project, but still had a bunch of scraps left over that I didn't want to toss. Happily, I found inspiration at a quilt shop last summer to make this wall hanging.
I cut lots of circles and hand sewed all of it with embroidery floss.
It turned out marvelously. I love the texture of the felted wool, and I love the way the colors play off one another.
In particular, I look at this project and think of how relaxing it was to hand stitch this low maintainence fabric together (no frayed edges ever!).
I plan to make another paisley version in shades of gray with a little red mixed in."

"Six weeks ago I gave up sugar for Lent, hoping that it would trim my belly fat as lots of research says belly fat in women is all about sugar (which also happens to be why so many men have "beer bellies" - apparently the sugar in beer is particularly bad for belly fat).
My goals in giving up the sugar was to lose some weight, but more so to fit into some pants that had gotten just tight enough that I had a hard time buttoning them.
I also planned to walk/run more now that the roads are less icy.
Success!! I lost five pounds in 2 weeks JUST by cutting out the sugar. I was extra diligent about no sugar the first three weeks and, yes, I was able to comfortably get back into those formerly tight pants.
Giving up sugar this time (I tried unsuccessfully two years ago) was actually easier than I expected. I didn't give up natural sugars like honey, real maple syrup or fruit sugars, so I was able to get a mild sugar fix that didn't mess with my metabolism.
While I didn't exercise as much as I had planned, I have determined that this experiment isn't going to be just a Lenten thing; I'm turning it into a lifestyle choice. Now that my body is satisfied with foods with less sugar, I'm saving decadent desserts for special occasions only." |

"I searched online for vintage apron patterns, and found one that I liked. I headed to the nearest town and went to Hancock Fabrics, I couldn't decide on which apron to make, so I picked out fabric for two. The first one I made was a short one. It has ruffles a frilly pocket and two layers. It has rick rack and a red polka-dot bow on the pocket.
I love it. I finished it when my parents came to visit and that night when we were making supper, I wore it and now my mama wants one. So I'm going to make her one. It was awesome. I have been wearing it in the kitchen and it's so much nicer than wiping my hands on my jeans."

"My father is a gun dealer. I have grown up with guns, I have a concealed carry permit in Georgia and South Carolina. South Carolina required me to sit through a class and take a test afterwards. I have been through the hunter safety courses and have my hunter safety certificate. We built a shooting range in an old silage pit behind our house. We shoot there at least once a week. I also do cowboy mounted shooting with our horses. I have spent well over 20 hours at the range.
I won the South Carolina state championships shooting on horseback, as well as placed 5th in the nation in my class at nationals, and I have been a world qualifier for 3 years.
I also shot 1 buck last year, 4 turkeys, 1 bobcat and a few rabbits. And I have used one of my turkey tags so far this year (I ate everything except the bobcat). Collectively last year hunting I spent about 35+ hours."

"My quest for learning and using new vocabular words is ongoing. I'm on a perpetual search for new and interesting words and try to use them appropriately in anything that I write.
I am a very active participant on the Farmgirl Connection, posting an average of at least 5 posts per day. I believe that I am consistently careful with my grammar and spelling. I'm sure there are a few posts that are less than my best, but I usually know that and, sometimes, those can be purposely done that way.
I had to wait a very long time to get "Woe is I" from our library and reading books such as this is always helpful guidance for better usage of English.
In my posts, emails, handwritten correspondence or any other communication that I do I do not use abbreviations and all the "in" shortcuts, especially those used in text messages.
Furthermore, I don't use obscenities or swear words . . or any kind of "trash" language." |

"As stated in previous applications my quest for learning and using new words is a perpetual goal for me.
Because I consider myself a "medical language specialist" as a medical transcriptionist and former instructor in college level classes for medical terminology and transcription, I enjoy the pursuit of learning new medical terminology words. One must also have excellent knowledge and comprehensive of "English" words, and correct spelling, to learn medical terminology.
I have also written numerous letters to our newspaper which publishes newpapers for four different cities. My letters have addressed a variety of issues or have been news articles to published as such. My letters have included, just this month, a letter addressing the issue of "precise communication and syntax."
"Eats, Shoots and Leaves" was interesting, enlightening, helpful and included just enough humor to keep one reading."

"I made a pin cushion for the top of a short and wide canning jar, I put in the supplies listed and some that are needed on emergencies such as weddings and dance recitals. This little kit will be my traveling kit, for all those just-in-case times that I will need it.
It came out as cute as can be. I believe that it will be put to good use at my daughter’s dance recital in a few months."

"I gathered up all of our reusable bags to find that we did have six. Three go in the trunk of my car, two in my husband’s and one in the house. I use the three in my car every week for grocery shopping, the one’s in my husband’s car get used when I am out with him and the one in the house is for bringing packages to the post office. I even put our family cooler in my car. So I can unload the groceries into the cooler as I put them into the trunk. That way the bags never leave the car.
This system is working out great and I am happy we did it. Everyone understands exactly what to do with the bags. If we see a bag in the house that doesn’t belong we know what to do, and because all the bags are slightly different, we know where they are supposed to be."

"For the past two days I have been helping my neighbor get her garden started. I tilled and weeded. Together we built two raised beds and added soil, compost and fertilizer to get her going. I have two small pop up greenhouses and have started seeds to help her begin her gardening. It was two loong days but it was worth it!
Her garden beds look beautiful and she can't wait to get started!" |
