Linda, Thanks for the welcome. I know I will love it here. I have lots of ideas and things I want to do -just no time. I needed a commitment to get me motivated - this looked like something fun but at the same time not to big.

Melanie, I'm so glad your potholders arrived & you like them! Enjoy!
For everyone else who's interested you can see pictures of pocket potholders I made for another swap that are just like the ones I made Melanie on my blog at: http://auntdaisyscottage.blogspot.com/2009/07/potholder-swap.html There is a link in the post to the tutorial to make these. They are easy! No binding required!!

I have a question about sewing potholders ... first, I can't find insul-bright here north of Toronto (how bizarre!) but there's a thick quilted substitute at my local fabric store - not sure if it'll work, but I hope so ... any other suggestions for heat retarding?
Second, all the nice (to me anyway) fabrics for this project (again at my local fabric store) are all cotton. Usually I would get poly/cotton but if I do use the cotton should I wash it first (for clothing I normally would)? What about the cotton batt inside the potholder? should I wash that too?
Thanks! |

Hi! Christine, Welcome to MJF!! You will love it here :) If you can't find insul-brite and don't want to order it online, you can use doubled layers of cotton batting. After all that's what we did before insul-brite was invented! LOL! I use "Warm & Natural" brand cotton batting in my quilts and save the scraps for small projects like potholders and table runners. Be sure to use all cotton batting! the stuff with poly in it will melt from the heat - not good for a potholder :( Using all cotton fabrics is actually a better idea for potholders, they get washed a lot. Just prewash your cotton fabric to shrink it and make sure the colors don't run, (good idea with any sewing project using cotton) but DON'T prewash the cotton batting. After the quilted project is washed it will have a really nice "quilted look" almost antique or vintage! I've been making pocket potholders for the swaps I've been in ~ really fun and easy. You can see pictures and the link for the tutorial on my blog here: http://auntdaisyscottage.blogspot.com/2009/07/potholder-swap.html Have fun!! :)

Thanks for your advice CathyJean! I've done a fair bit of sewing but no quilting. I love your potholders and have copied the instructions (a very nice housewarming gift it'll make for my sister-in-law).

Victoria, don't feel bad - I haven't started mine either. I'm here at my daughter's place babysitting (3 weeks so far) and won't be back home until late Saturday night (10 hr drive home). So I won't even get started on mine until after I recover.
So many of these sisters are just too awesome for words when it comes to doing all these swaps, etc. and getting stuff out so quickly. I envy them. So hang in there, we'll get ours done too.

Well learning to sew is on my "Bucket list" and I'm not quite an expert yet. Actually, I'm just moving out of the making pillows stage. So, I thought potholders could be my next step. Those little buggers are not as easy to make as they look like they would be. Trying to sew the trim on kicked my butt. I am trying though. My partner may not get the most perfect potholder but she will get one that has truely been made with blood (at least 5 finger sticks), sweat (air conditioner went crazy) and tears (self explanitory).

Oh too funny! I'm sorry for your frustration but glad that you can still be happy and upbeat about continuing to try. I've been sewing since I was a young teenager and I still go through that range of emotions even now depending on the project!! |

Now see Linda I originally thought just the opposite. I just had to have a sewing machine so all this would be faster and easier. But it really is easier to sew by hand that machine gets going and before I can catch up with it I've sown my pants leg closed.

Cathy- okiequilter Got your potholders in the mail today.
Too funny Victoria. I don't feel so bad now. I had some fits trying to sew up my potholders too.

Glad to hear I am not the only one having trouble with potholders. I thought how hard can this be they are only little things. I hope my Partner likes them though. They will be in the mail this weekend. Toni |
