I never know if I should list badge ideas on the forum or just email the farm. In the past I've done both. So I thought what if we have a thread for everyone to start putting their ideas in one place. This may be easier than said, but let's try.

I'll even start.

What about a Language badge?
Beginner: research a language you are interested in and find out where it is spoken and how it started.
Intermediate: Learn to count from 1 to 10 in your chosen language.
Expert: Take a class or check out CDs from the library, but learn to speak at least 100 words in your chosen language.

The expert requirement I am a little less sure about. Maybe other folks might have an idea that might work.

Ooh, that's a great idea, Laurie! Like a cultural awareness category. That could include lots of subtopics besides language, including food, music, etc.

Excellent idea, CJ!!! I was always really annoyed that my school didn't offer that for a language credit. They started to have it as a "fun elective" by the time I graduated, but it still didn't count toward the required language credit. Bah.

CJ,

My thought behind the badge was that I intended to teach sign language to my son as he grew older. Both his Nana and uncle know it and I have a book how to teach kids. It is one of the few languages that can cross language boundaries. I know tidbits of so many languages that I have been know to intermix them in the wrong way. I said "Oui" to a question in a Mexican restaurant.

I just received my welcome package with the sisterhood badge...it is beautiful. I can't wait to come up with an idea for my badge.

I got another badge idea today. What about an herb badge. Not exactly curing the common cold but learning different uses of herbs, peppermint to help congestion, lavender to relax. It would be like,

Beginner
Identify three herbs and their possible uses and try at least one.
Intermediate
Grow 3 herbs for cooking or medicinal uses, cultivate and use it. Share your experience on the farmgirl forum or with your chapter.
Expert
Grow 5 different herbs from the ones in the intermediate step. Cultivate the new herbs and try out their possibilites.

I like the idea of an Herb Badge. I have been wanting to learn about herbs, growing them at home, and their many uses.

Another idea for a badge would be to learn something about landscaping around your house. I am taking a correspondence course from Penn Foster to learn something new and get ideas for adding to the landscape around my house.

Hi everyone!

We are loving all these ideas! The next round of new badges will come out in July, so probably around June we will write them up and send them out for feedback. Keep the ideas coming!

I love the Herb Badge idea! Perfect! Soaps, teas, cooking, so many uses... I would love to research herbs.

I skimmed through, so I hope I didn't miss this one already, but is there a cheese-making badge? Different varieties, hard/soft, etc.

Hi Sharon,

There is a mention of learning to make your own cheese in the expert level of Backyard Farmer, but we don't have a specific cheese making badge yet. That's another one to add to the list!

Chelsea,

Could we lock this thread near the top so as ideas come and go, folks will have a place for easy access and not have to go back through the threads to find it. Just a thought.

Hi girls.
It's "sticky" now, so will always appear at the top of the list of topics.
Thanks for all the great ideas!

I was thinking under the "Make It Easy" or "Stitching and Crafting" section you could have a stationery or paper-making badge.

This is a great article: http://www.hobbyfarms.com/crafts-and-nature/papermaking-fun-or-profit.aspx

This could be along the lines of making your own special occasion cards or invitations (think Cricut, Stampin' Up, etc.) or actually making your own paper with dried flowers or fibers (dryer lint works great!). The expert level could be to make a journal similar to the one discussed in the article above.

Hi Joan,

We do have a Scrapbooking badge! Under Stitching and Crafting, #13.

" 13. Scrapbooking

Beginner Level

Make a scrapbook to commemorate a special event for a friend. Include pictures and mementos from the special day. Wrap it up and surprise your friend with this special gift.

Intermediate Level

Try incorporating different elements into your scrapbook like fabrics, tatting, or dried flowers.
Make an heirloom scrapbook on a topic like “Day in the Life” or “I Remember When” to give to a young person you care about. Learn about how fibers and photographs age and how to care for them. Read chapters 1, 3, and 11 of Saving Stuff: How to Care for and Preserve Your Collectibles, Heirlooms, and Other Prized Possessions by Don Williams and Louisa Jaggar. Find out about scrapbooking terms like vellum and lignin. Include journaling or storytelling in your scrapbook to give your reader a sense of context or what’s going on behind the scenes. This is a great opportunity to try different styles of penmanship.
Take a picture or scan one of your scrapbooks or scrapbook pages and share it with your farmgirl Sisters.

Expert Level

Look up a fine art book and take note of the design elements. Look at the composition of the subjects and the colors in paintings you find especially beautiful. Look for relationships between where the artist places important subjects. Try using a composition or color palette from a favorite painting in your scrapbook pages.
Make a historical scrapbook. Read Organizing and Preserving Your Heirloom Documents by Katherine Scott Sturdevant. Use your historical scrapbook to tell a family history or an interesting story from your town’s past.
Share your scrapbooking expertise. "

I love the paper making and journal making idea! There is a lady around here that comes to the farmer's market every once in awhile that makes the coolest recycled, homemade journals with fun different fabric covers. We'll add that to the list.

So my merit badge part of my brain is on over drive, what about a gathering up badge like this:

Beginner,
Find something new you would like to join or meetup with new people, anything from library gatherings to joining a league, or a ladies garden club. If there is no activities available, start one of your own. Attend two meetings.

Intermediate
Attend 4 more meetings.

Expert
Attend an additional 8 meetings or teach a class on your new found extra activity.

Yeah... I will go back to my late night quilling now.

So... I had another idea, this one seems a bit better. I started a new project, a new lamp for my sewing room, more decorative than funtional. It is basically a simple paper lamp and I took a romance novel with the cover ripped off and started cutting circles out of it and covering the lamp, looking like this http://www.etsy.com/listing/72959615/artichoke-mixed-book-page-pendant-light

So I wanted to know, what else could I do with books that I could use anymore, or put on paperbook swap because of damage. So I googled and found this great site http://www.onlinecolleges.net/2010/02/17/80-awesome-ideas-for-all-your-old-or-unwanted-books/

Just make sure you are not cutting up a first addition wizard of oz :)

What about recycling. I don't recall a badge about that. I know some areas don't have any, but I think we could tweak the badge to accommodate those farmgirls too.

beginner: research recycling in your area. What can and cannot be recycled.
intermediate: Determine what you have that can be recycled instead of thrown away, and send those goods to be reused. Do this for a week.
Expert: Recycle for an entire month. If your area does not support recycle find ways to recycle household items.

Architecture Badge.... There is tons of information on Google Books about past structures, perhaps, learning to read a traditional plan and then for expert designing your dream, farmgirl house, and your "might actually happen" dream house.

How about some kind of badge for finishing projects that have been waiting "a while" to be complete. Might be good inspiration to finish a few
