Just a heads up on deodorants. There is a chemical in all deodorants (aluminum something) that my Gyn said may cause breast cancer. Another thing to worry about (now we can't smell good)..anyway I ran out to buy an all natural deodorant. Robbery! Soooo expensive it's ridiculous. Now we will see if I stink lol, hope not. I will keep you updated.

We like the crystal one lasts for a long time (sometimes years) so the price disapates with time. and then some people like plain and simple baking soda. VERY cheap.

| I actually rarely use deodorants. As long I keep my underarms shaved I don't smell...Unless I do yardwork, but who doesn't stink after that? |

Making your own deodorant is easy and cheap. I've been using my homemade stuff for quite a while now and it's so nice. Of course, cleanliness is key, but if you're interested in DIY, here's my recipe:
2T food-grade baking soda + 2T cornstarch (arrowroot is better, but pricey), mixed thoroughly into 1/4 cup cocoa butter (I get Palmer's in the jar) and another 1/4 cup of food-grade coconut oil. Melt the coconut oil, mix in the cocoa butter, then the blended dry ingredients. If you like, add a few drops of an essential oil like lemongrass or whatever fragrance you like, if it doesn't irritate your skin. Put it in a nice jar and apply it with fingertips after bathing. Easy-peasey! |

The "aluminum something" you spoke of as a potentially-toxic ingredient in most commercial deodorants is actually "aluminum zirconium trichloroydrex". It clogs the sweat glands and can be absorbed into fatty tissue (such as the breasts) as well as into the brain. I find that the Weleda brand of spray-on deodorants work relatively well, especially the rose and citrus scents. They are all natural, made in Germany, and use essential oils to retard odor-causing bacteria. Aubrey Organics makes a pretty good product, too. I'm a holistic, licensed esthetician & herbalist and wrote a book called, Organic Body Care Recipes, in which you can find several homemade herbal deodorants for body and feet. They work quite well unless you are out exercising heavily. Good luck.

Funny, my hubby and I just had this conversation yesterday. We use a natural one, but I am wanting to try making my own. Watch out: Yesterday I saw a new version of Tom's of Maine, a stronger one than before and it now contains the Aluminum ingredient in it. Gotta read those labels.

I've been using Lush handmade deoderants for years. I love them, and honestly, with no time with 5 kids, and my hubby working 12 hrs a day 7 days a week, to make my own. There are three choices, and around the holidays they sometimes add seasonal ones. They last absolutely forever!!
