Can any of you please recommend a good natural medicine book, or herbal remedy book - one that is tried and true? I'd really appreciate your help. Thank you! - Nini

Thanks, Rachel! I've never heard of her... I wonder if she is any relation to Dave Balch, the speaker and author of "Cancer for Two?" He's really great. I'm going to have to look for her books! Thanks so much, really! :)

My "go to" book though is one specifically for Nature's Sunshine products, although the information in the book on the single herbs is good for any type of herb (the formulas are NSP specific though) it is from Tree of Light publishing, by Steven Horne. EXCELLENT book. I am considering buying the updated version in the near future, if you'd like I can send you my "old" one once I get the replacement.

Nini Look up any of Michael Weiners books. He is Michael Savage of the radio, but few know the extent of his education and nutritional research. He holds master's degrees from the University of Hawaii in medical botany and medical anthropology and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, in nutritional ethnomedicine. I have his herbal book, "Weiner's Herbal", which as a hardback sells for $150, but I snagged on Amazon as a paperback for about $15. It is one of the few herbal books that actually gives doseages, as many just tell what the herb is used for. I also have his antioxidant cookbook, very easy recipes with easy to acquire ingredients. A few of his other books are titled "Healing Children Naturally" , "Earth Medicine, Earth Food", "Herbs that Heal" & "The Complete Book of Homeopathy" I have heard him speak about nutrition, and this man knows hs stuff. Amazon carries most of them. Good luck.

Nini, another source to check out would be the The Green Pharmacy series books written by Dr. James. A Duke. He is a well known American Botanist, Herbalist and Pharmocognosist. I had the opportunity to spend two weeks in the Peruvian rainforest with Dr. Duke in 1996 studying tropical plants. He is truly a wealth of useful information and it's presented in a way that almost anyone can relate to.
Cheers! ~ Marilyn

Thank you, girls! I'm going to check all of those books out online and try to find the best deal! Awesome!
WOW! Marilyn! How exciting that must've been! I'm impressed! What an incredible experience!
Without going into any detail, I am just really so frustrated with modern medicine. I realize we can't really play around with our health, but I really want to learn more about this for myself - maybe even take a couple of courses and work toward certification or something? I know doctors and hospitals have their place, but so often I feel like they don't even really know what they're doing. It's as if they're playing Russian roulette with our health. I can't stand it and I can't stand paying for their "play" time. I would like a better understanding of the different things that are happening to our bodies, the illnesses that we face, and maybe if there are simple home remedies and natural methods to care for ourselves, we can save the doctor's visits for the really important and necessary consultations and treatments, you know?
So, thank you so much for your help - you'll never know what it means to me, really. I knew I could count on my farmgirl sisters!
Hugs -

You might want to look at http://www.herbmentor.com/ it is 8.95/month or 97 (I think)/year and WELL worth it!!! It is a learn at your own pace website and the teachers are some of the best herbalists on the planet, but there is not a certification. You can also check out the American Herbalists Guild they have info on there about classes that you can take for certification and get professional membership with the AHG. They also have a listing of distance education courses you can take.
I agree with you about modern medicine--and I'm a nurse, lol. I have lots of issues with my "dayjob".

Oh! AWESOME! Rachel! Thank you! I've never heard of this before! I'm going to definitely check this out!
LOL! You're so funny! You're a nurse?! I love that!!! I think it's kind of sad that our health care system is so closed minded, don't you? I was talking to my dental hygienist last year, and it was absolutely amazing to learn just how integral our dental health is to our total health, and yet it is completely ignored when it comes to medical insurance. And I think there is a lot to be said for alternative medicine, but it goes out of the "accepted" norm, so we don't hear much about it. I think it would be so great to learn all about natural medicine. I would love to go to medical school, to be honest, but my son's education comes first and foremost. Plus, by the time I graduated, it'd be time for retirement! LOL! I'm definitely going to look into all of this, though, Rachel. I can't thank you enough for putting me in this direction!

No problem! I've learned TONS from the herbmentor page. It is just AWESOME (can't say that enough). It irritates me that at work, the doctors will actually ask me sometimes about herbs to use for something and then not tell the patient, but oh well. I've also thought long and hard about medical school (medicine is interesting and all but my main thing is being able to practice medicine but do so holistically with a license and be able to legally change people's medications if needed)but that is a long time to go to school and with all of the new requirements coming up with "healthcare" and insurance changes more and more responsibility is being placed on the providers and not on the individuals (where it should be), plus insurances are paying for less and less so even if a patient really does need something they have a great chance of not getting it. Yes our medical system is buttcheek backwards. If I can help you out with anything, just let me know!

LOL! RACHEL!!! I love that expression, "buttcheek backwards!" I'm gonna use that a lot from now on!!!! CRACK ME UP!!! :)
Hang in there, sister - I bet you will set the world on fire with your knowledge someday! That'd really irritate me, too! I hear the whole insurance thing... I won't even get started. Just suffice it to say, I hear you! ;)
Thanks again!

Nini, I am looking into herbal and holistic medicine also. I have been to 3 dr. so far since I moved to FL 4 years ago and because I am interested in using natural methods rather than drugs they don't like it.
I have learned a lot here and will hope to find some books I can buy or some at the library. Thanks Nini for your inquiry.

I have Prescription for Natural Healing and I've been looking for those Michael Savage books at thrift stores too! I haven't checked amazon lately but I also haven't had the time too :)

Susun Weed has an excellent site and her books are awesome (however if you're not open minded as far as religion goes you may not like her as she is very goddess oriented but not to the point in her writing that she is out to convert. I also LOVE Juliette de Baracli Levy's books--she has some for farms/animals as well as people. Dr. Andrew Weil has some good books and his site has some good info as well. I've come across quite a few "home remedy" books at Goodwill that have some good info.
