I have had chickens for more than 20 years. They are free range and get a mixture of non gmo grain and extra goodies. I collect my eggs at least twice a day. Early in Feb. I cracked open an egg and it looked great, nice and orangy and only 2 days old. I cooked it over easy. I dipped my toast in it and when I put it in my mouth it tasted horrible. I literally about tossed my cookies. Since then that has not happened since until now.

My new hens started laying about 3 weeks ago. I have been getting quite a few double yokers. I made one of those a few days ago and mind you this was a fresh egg only a few days old. I'll be darn again... it tasted horrible almost like rotten fish. I feel sick just typing about it. I know this egg was fresh cause I happened to be in the coup when she layed it and brought it in to show my hubby.

Has anyone every had their eggs taste horrible like this and what would make them taste so bad? I know an old egg can taste bad but I know these were fresh. I am now afraid to sell my eggs because one of my customers may have this experience and I would feel terrible.

I am gunshy now and afraid to eat my own eggs. Both times the eggs looked beautiful and smelled fine.I don't know why this is happening.Thanks.

is it possible someone is throwing something over the fence into your yard, like food scraps?, also grains will mold if they have gotten damp, I've never had this problem so thats all I can think of, good luck...

Nope its not possible anyone is throwing anything to the chickens but me. I live in the middle of 65 acres and can't see any neighbors anywhere. The feed is given fresh everyday and no mold in that I keep it in bins in the barn.
Thanks for the imput though Tina.

sorry to hear of your bad eggs Linda. I have no idea what it could be either. Did you have anyone else taste the bad eggs? Just my first thought, could it have been your taste buds? Do they stink also? I hope you can figure it out. You shouldn't be having any problem with pullets just starting to lay.

Have you checked your property to see what they could be getting into? I wonder if they found some wild garlic or something else that might affect the taste.

The eggs definately tasted bad to all of us but they do not smell bad and they look like healthy eggs.It has only been a couple of them so far. These eggs definately had a terrible fishy taste.

The chickens are roaming around in the same place they always have.I mow their lot about every 10 days in the spring and summer so the grass doesn't get tough. One thing I did do was switch to a non gmo layer food that has kelp in it. I am wondering if this could be the culpret? I am going to call the company tomorrow to see if they have ever had this complaint before. Thanks for the suggestions.
