I am a homeschool mama. This year I will be working with my 12 year old daughter she will be in the seventh grade and my for your old son with preschool and my almost two yr old will be learning along.
in order to be able to enjoy more relaxing and comfortable Seasons we are starting our school year on July 7th. This is new for us. We struggle with routines. I am NOT a very organized person. And unfortunately it has rubbed off on my daughter.
I think I have our schedule down. I'm wondering if I should go ahead and try to implement some of the things that are not necessarily homeschool during the day. To try to establish the scheduling. Every time I set up a schedule and routine it gets to load for a couple of weeks and then forgotten about. And I am adding a lot of Waldorf principles into our pre school which also is more routine based. I really like the flow and rhythm of Waldorf though being a Christian some of the principles aren't ideal. So what do you homeschool mamas do? When will your school year start?

I have a schedule... but honestly, we more try to have a routine. We will continue school through the summer, but start "hard core" after my surgery. I try to do any subjects that we ALL do (geography, history, and science) to begin with in the morning. Then I have the older three do independent subjects while I do BFIAR with the younger three. Then I put the youngest two down for naps and do work with the older four that they need help with.

Oh hunny - you do realize I am FAR from that - right!?!? I have so many flaws! And most of the time I feel like Super Failure. With that said, I know God is working on me to make me the person He designed me to be... And I thank you for your vote of confidence <3

We school year around too, no real schedule or routine, yet we always get done with our curriculum on time or early. I am actually playing with the idea of being less structured then our already low structured way! lol

We are preg with number 5 and it is making me question being structured at all. lol

Heather - I commented on another thread, but congratulations! Trust me, you've got this! I try to get my older ones to do as much independently as they can, and those they need help with, we often do on a couch or my bed, lol, when I am pregnant. How old are your kiddos? Mine are almost eleven, eight (he will be nine in December), seven, five, three, and one. The older ones sometimes helps their younger siblings as well. During my first trimester, I am usually both tired and sick, second trimester I feel fantastic, and third I feel great but tired.

Alicia, don't fret about schedules getting forgotten or changing. You're doing a great job.

The other gals mentioned having more of a routine than a schedule. Every family finds their own rhythm and groove to life. While you can appreciate and learn from others, don't get stuck in comparing yourself with other homeschoolers or even trying to implement something because you think you should. For example, several of my friends were teaching their elementary kids Latin and Greek. I felt very inadequate and tried to 'force' my kids to do the same. OMG! it was awful. Today, 15 years later, my adult children and I laugh about it.

We schooled year-round. But, that doesn't mean we actually did school every day. It gave us a year to finish the necessary skills for their particular grade. :)

The consistent routine we stuck to was wake-up time, breakfast, farm chores, clean up from getting dirty doing farm chores, group Bible devotion/study, Math, Lang. Arts. By the time we got to Lang. Arts, all kinds of interruptions would begin to stress our day. I always figured they got the most important stuff done...they would be able to read, write and count money, lol.

One of the best compliments from one of my daughters: "Moma, you smell good...like dirt."

Shannon that is basically how my pregnancies go as well. We have 8 yo, 4 yo, 3 yo... and then the one on the way. I am going to combine the 4oy and 3 yo for schooling I am thinking (but we aren't doing anything structured with them this year... next year though).

LOL Catherine, I remember when that was big in the homeschool community (it still is in some circles), I guess it's a good brain exercise if your kids enjoy it, but I always thought it was rather useless...since no one I personally knew would ever use those languages in real life situations! We work on Spanish which about 50 percent of the pop where we live probably speaks spanish, we may work on vietmenese at some point as well since that is gaining steam here (so many have moved to our area) it may be useful. But, only if my kids enjoy it. Other wise, I don't really see the point.
