This morning I was working at ridding my front yard of stickers. They moved into the neighbor in the spring and it's been a battle ever since because I don't use weed killers.
I had worked my way to the side of the house where two lantanas hang on a double Shepard's hook. While I was bent down pulling up the stickers the most beautiful large black & gold butterfly lit on the lantana. He wasn't afraid of me at all. When I stood up it was only inches from my head but he kept on feasting and then flew off.
So the moral of my little story is that if I wasn't doing war with the nasty stickers I would have missed out on seeing the beautiful butterfly.
I feel blessed every time I see a butterfly these days, because there aren't as many in this part of Texas as there used to be.

Sara...we don't have near the butterflies here either...compared to when I was a kid. I Love them and miss them too.
What the heck are "Stickers"...I have never heard of them either.
Hugs, Peggy

Beverley, I'll try to describe what stickers are. A weed that produces little round things that are covered with sharp needles that stick in your bare feet or stick to your pant leg. So they are called stickers - never have heard them called anything else.
Even in newspaper gardening columns they are called stickers. The stickers are how the weed reproduces. Hope this makes sense to you - it was hard for me to describe them.
Peggy, it is sad that butterflies are having a hard go of surviving. I too miss them. Something else I miss are fireflies. When I was growing up in the summer the fields around me were covered with them. My sisters and I would catch some and put in fruit jars. I hadn't thought of them in years.

We have a weed that grows here that are close to the ground and when you step on them you would have thought you stepped on a bunch of needles. you actually have little sharp small thorns in your foot. But they reproduce with a flower that drys up and blows away the seeds. So I guess we don't have stickers here. I will have to look them up!! interesting!!!

Beverley, I guess no matter what part of the country we come from we all deal with some sort of nasty weed that pokes our fingers & feet.

Sara...up North here we call what you described as stickers. "Burrs" They are awful!!! Usually they grow wild and we don't get them in our yards. But if your dog (or you) run threw a wild field or meadow...you will get them all over you. They are horrible to pick out of the dogs fur.
I had never seen Fireflies...until I went to visit my kids in Michigan. I had heard of them...but not seen them. I was so fascinated by them that I would turn out the living room lights and watch them across the street in the Neighbors yard. I wish we had them here...they are so pretty.
Hugs and Smiles, Peggy

Peggy, Texas has burrs too but I haven't seen any since I moved to Paris. Burrs are a lot bigger than stickers but they must belong to the same family.
Fireflies are magical - sure would like to see them again. Got to get off this computer and back to task at hand that I do best - piddling.
