My sweet foster boy Caruso started having bloody poops on Monday and got a lump under his throat on Tuesday. The vet discovered that he had no platelets in his blood due to his immune system attacking itself. He is at a local vet hospital where he's gotten a blood transfusion and is on other meds. We are waiting for his platelet count to increase. It's 6000 now and should normally be 150000. The sad thing is, a family was interested in him the day I took him to the vets. I visit him every day and keep positive prayers, and ask y'all to add yours.

The blood transfusion and medicines didn't help Caruso, and the head of Dachshund Rescue and I both agreed that we didn't want him to go through more pain. I held him in my arms and sang "you ate my sunshine" as he crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Every time I sing that song I'll think of him.

What a caring thing to do my only sister. I have had to let go of 3 dogs and 1 cat in my adult life and none of it is easy. I do feel good that they no longer hurt. Two of my animals, I believe, asked me to let them go. Remember the dog and the good life you gave him at the end.

This sad experience has inspired me to help Dachshund Rescue monetarily.I have listed all my Hawaiian shirts on Ebay, with the sales to go to Dachshund Rescue South Florida. I even have a few ladies shirts (one is a 3X western shirt!). All are reasonably priced.

I am sorry for your pain. Letting them cross the Rainbow Bridge is always painful. But you did the right thing,

Oh I am so sorry for having to loss him. I had a dachshund do the same thing but it was the red blood cells and she went down really fast and only lasted 2 days after I realized and took her to the vet. My golden/lab mix had the same thing but it only affected her platelets and they put her prednasone (probably spelled that wrong)anywho, She lived for another 10 years. she was on a low dose of prednasone for a few years and then the vet felt it was so low that we could take her off of it. She always stayed at the low end of normal but she did live a good life. Ya just never know which ones will make it and which ones won't. So sorry for you. Was he on any type of heartworm meds that also had flea and tick control? We figured on the lab mix that is was the one med she was on that cause her platelet count to go wacky. the Doxie we never did know why it happened..
