This year's International Herb Society Herb of the Year is a really good one. Viola violet family which includes pansies and heartease aka Johnny-jump-up.
For new FarmGirls each year we celebrate our FarmGirl Jubilee and MaryJane's birthday in May. Some of us plant the Herb of the Year or a rose in celebration. I post the Herb of the Year early so those who wish to plant it can add it to their garden shopping list.

Linda, They are also edible. I'll do a container for the back deck so it'll be close to my kitchen. I like violets in my hot or iced tea. Just thinking and talking about my gardens makes me happy.

Great choice, Sara! Violas make beautiful cake decorations too! They also add a pop of colour to your summer salads.

Do you dry them for tea or just pop one in fresh? I'm a bit nervous to try a flower tea - I had a jasmine tea once and it was like inhaling perfume. I din't like it at all!

Heather, I have not dried flowers for tea. I add them fresh to black tea. I'm like you I don't like my tea to taste like perfume. I may try drying some this year.

WOW! I knew pansies were edible, but I didn't realize they were considered an herb! How interesting! Love the pansie and johnny jump up nomination for herb of the year! Will definately purchase myself a plant or two (or some seeds) as soon as I come across any in my neck of the woods. We are well into winter here on the high desert, we are snow covered with bright blue skies today! Cold, but beautiful! I'm imagining a darling little pansie poking it's head out of the snow! xo

Love pansies, violets and Johnny jump ups. I have used violets for decorations on cakes, sugarcoating them to make them sparkle. I've also used them with out sugarcoating.

One of my favorites Sara and I do so love adding it to my salads! There is a gal I follow on Insta that makes, bakes, creates the most beautiful edibles with her organic flowers! She uses a lot of viola's too! :)

I love the Viola for 2022 and have already purchased one.
May I pitch a suggestion for the year 2023?
I would like to nominated the Sunflower as the next herb in 2023. A sunflower is classified as an annual, it belongs to the Asteraceae family, being an annual means it is an herb.
There are over 500 documented types of sunflowers#127803; to enjoy. The flower was a symbol of Aztec Gods and from there spread into other Native American cultures.
Sunflowers are also known as Indian Heads.
You can harvest the flowers and the seeds.
They grow well along side other tall crops like corn or sorghum.
They grow best in areas with low humidity and hot climates, plant in rich soil with full sun exposure.
You can even buy sunflowers in a rainbow #127752; of colors such as blue, pink, red, orange.

Candy, I did not choose the Herb of the Year. The International Herb Society did. I forgot to add that when I posted. I have edited my post to clarify it.
I think your idea of having FarmGirls to choose the Herb of the Year is a great idea. Put it on your calendar to post in 2023 that sunflowers will be the Herb of the Year.

As for next year,, Sunflowers!!! Luv it!
I grew quite a few this year, and dried the heads for the birds..

Because I live in the Inland northwest, sunflowers are summer only, but each year I do grow an assortment of then and then dry and save the seeds for my winter bird feed.
I look forward to starting off this year with Violas especially the sweet little Johnny Jump Ups in purples and yellows.

We have pretty much a clean slate here for planting this year. Johnny jump up would be so pretty in our front garden. We tore down wistera from the pergola on the deck. It had been there a long time and was starting to ruin the rails and poles of the pergola. We are going to plant some morning glories to climb it. Not too many as I know they can go crazy and get really quite heavy. Will be planting some violets out front too.

We still have snow. I was thinking of starting some seeds in some empty plastic milk jugs, then either transplanting them out side when it warms up or maybe keeping them inside and decorating the milk jugs. Should I poke holes in the jugs or just put rocks?

Thanks for posting the choice early, Sara. Growing up with my Nannie made me love pansies and Johnny Jump-Ups. She put them in every empty spot she could find. I will look for some to put in pots so I can take them to my dad's when I move. Hope you are doing well, Sara.
