I remember when I was in grade school it was a big event on
MAY FIRST. There was a big pole and either ribbons or ropes
with ribbons and we walked round and round holding on to
what ever it was. I looked it up this morning and it tells all about it. I don't believe they do it any more.

Thanks for the memory, Nancy Jo. May is also the time of the year to hang flowers on neighbors' doors. The cone shaped holders have a name, but I can't recall it at the moment, maybe later I will.

As I was letting my mind wander it came to me. Tussy mussy are the cone shaped holders and flowers.

Those both sound like wonderful May traditions that we should bring back!

When we were living in Germany we would celebrate by going into Wurzburg or another town! It was so much fun to see the traditional outfits and dances and fun food! My husbands daughter just sent us a picture of their May Day in Oxfordshire. Over 12k in attendance and a green man hidden in the crowd! I loved our tradition too as a child growing up and for art class we'd make the cones and pick wildflowers to take home. So many wonderful traditions and memories. Kids these days have no idea....

When my girls were young, we used to attend a May Day celebration with May Pole dancing with the local Waldorf School. It was a lot of fun to do and the pole looks beautiful when completed.

Yep. I remember dancing around the May Pole . . . In fact I think it was on May Day when I was about 9 or 10 that I got my very first kiss from Donald Pascucci . . . Oh joy !!

I love Tussy Mussies.
Maybe someone should do a Tussie Mussie swap. That could be fun. There are lots of DIY instructions and videos for them on Google

Oh Jean,,, 1st kiss, sweetest kiss

Dianne, yes, May fest, on the 1st of May is such a celebration in Germany, .
My dear friend, Irmgard called me the other day, to tell me her Hubby came down with Covid so they could not celebrate today.

I remember wearing "crowns" of fresh picked flowers and ribbons. Gosh I miss those days.

I love reading and learning about seasonal traditions and especially those that are from "the old country." So many go way back and are still done today. First kiss? Wow, remembering that is so cool. I can't even remember who it was that kissed me first (which is awful to think I'd forget something like that). Be blessed and have a great day, everyone!

I remember doing the May Pole in school, but I don’t believe they do it anymore here. It’s sad to see those traditions fade away. I miss those fun activities!

Quick memory,, years ago,, when my mom was the President of the German Club where she lived (in SO CAL).. she called and asked me to make 12 'May Pole" table decorations.
which I said, "sure, no prob".. then I bribed my DH to cut out the wood discs and drill holes to run a doweling through,, then my paint and handy dandy glue gun and I went to work gluing on ribbon and fake flowers..
I wish I had a photo of them.. Mom said they were lovely,, and 1 person from each table 'won' the center piece to take home..
Now on the plus side, I was living in Central California at the time so it was a good excuse to drive 3hours down to Palm Springs and stay
at mom's for a few days,, so it was a win-win all around!

When Morgan was in grade school they did the Maypole "dance" every year and it was so fun. It is still done in Lindborg a small Swedish town 20 miles from here. They also have a water mill and grind flour and of course Oostika pudding with Lingonberry sauce, my favorite! If you are ever traveling I-70 or I-35 in the middle of Kansas stop and enjoy the crafts and food.
You will enjoy your time there. Oh and grab a bite at the Swedish Crown!

Kathy you have stirred up my curiosity...... what is oostika pudding? Lingonberry sauce is good on just about anything.
