Another sweet little bull calf this morning. Mama is a great mama - especially for a first timer!! I'll post some pictures soon.

How sweet, Heather!

Newbie farm girl question-- how much do you have to camp out in the barn with your herd during calving season?
One of my favorite YouTubers did a tour of how she had converted part of her hay loft into almost a studio apartment so she could midwife her goats. Is your setup similar or are cows more self-sufficient?

I take back what I said earlier! This is one of the most stubborn, bull headed little fellows!!!!! I am not his mama and he's letting me know it. He's not afraid of me at all. He stares at me without moving away. Doesn't care if I pet him, but he won't get up when I rub his back. He can do it - there's nothing wrong with him he just won't do it because he doesn't want to. I have to pick him up and get his legs under him then he'll stand there staring at me. He sniffs the nipple on the bottle then looks at me like "what am I supposed to do with that?" When I finally get his mouth open and the nipple in there he just bites it and clamps his mouth shut. After about half an hour I finally had him fed. Usually takes less than 2 minutes for them to drink a bottle. Stubborn, bull headed little.......

Anyway, LOL! We don't camp out in the barn. If we think one might have her baby that night I'll go out and check on them in the middle of the night. Maybe a couple times if they're in labor. Our house is very close to the barn and I'm a very light sleeper so I usually hear them when they're grunting and making noises that they make when they're calving. Now and then one will completely take me by surprise though. For the most part our cows are pros and need very little assistance. If the calf is positioned correctly they usually handle it just fine. It's the very rare occasion that a calf is backwards, or has a leg or it's head back that's a problem. I will stay and watch to see if it's a bull or heifer, or just because it's wonderful to watch. I know of some dairy farms that have an apartment attached to their calving barn. They have high dollar show cows and don't live on the farm though. I'm not sure if goats have more trouble having babies or if owners just worry more. I don't know much about goats at all.

That little calf does not know who he is tangling with, you will not give up. So funny though as I am imaging it in my mind as you describe it Heather. Yes and laughing my buns off! How I love your Cow stories!
Happy day to all.

How sweet! Just love farm babies! All our daffodils are starting to bloom. Some are still just buds but it's nice when they bloom at different times so there is color for awhile.

I agree Denise! I have one bunch of them all in bloom and another just starting to think about opening up. The same with some tulips - one bunch is getting ready to open and the other bunch is just starting so send up their flowers.

Another baby boy just came into the world. He's a slimy mess right now so I'll get some pictures in the morning. Mama's currently giving him a bath :)

How wonderful Heather. How do the animals do in this weather we've been having? Wednesday night was crazy. Did you get any of the tornado warnings?

Denise - except for them not wanting to go out in the pouring down rain to get penned up for milking (kind of like we don't want to run from the store to the car) they're doing great. They just hang out in the barn during the worst of it and then act like little kids running around when it's not so bad. Kind of fun to watch :) Luckily we just had some good thunderstorms - no tornadoes. Last weekend was the one year mark for the one that started by us and leveled parts of Indian Lake so everyone was watching the sky!

Here's the sweet new baby - and so far this one really is sweet. I think it's because he's half Hereford. All of them are just so calm and love to be rubbed and loved on!

It's been a little bit so here's a treat for you :)

Fresh from the oven!

We got flurries last night. But hey it's only April in Ohio and we've had it this late before. The good news is we are finally forecast to get some sunshine. Our rivers are overflowing and the fields and woods are flooded as well as some roads so we definitely need to dry out!

Ha! That's a good one!!! I have the best husband in the world!!!! He spent all weekend helping a friend and his dad, so today was going to be his "day off" (as much as you can get when you have to take care of the cows). When the milk truck pulled in to pick up our milk this morning it was covered in snow!!! We had some flurries falling during while we were finishing up last night, but there was no sign of any snow this morning. The driver told us south of town they were covered in snow. I just told my friend I was done with snow - guess I was wrong LOL! I was so excited I told my husband let's hurry up and get the chores done, he can grab the cookies while I make the hot chocolate and we can go see it!!!! I didn't expect him to really do it, but he said I was so excited there was no way he could tell me no. Best husband EVER!!!!!!!
