Posted - Jan 30 2009 : 11:33:03 AM I repurposed an old jelly jar as a shaker for baking soda, which I use to scrub out the sinks etc.
Put the lid face-up on an old piece of scrap wood (to protect your table) & drill holes using a 1/16 drill bit. Then turn the lid over and use a hammer to flatten out the holes from the backside. Voila! It's that easy.
I also stir in a couple of drops of essential oil into the baking soda, so the shaker does double duty as a pomander by scenting the cabinet I keep it in.

Posted - Mar 25 2009 : 11:57:54 AM Gals I'm new here but I wanted to jump in and say what a neat little gifty thing this would be. Do yall still have pantry poundings? or some such. We do here occasionally. This would be great to add this to a basket with different uses for baking powder that have been discussed. Throw in some other earth friendly products , that you make or buy and hand it over to the new owners of the new home or to a new just married farm gal. Thanks for this tip, I have enjoyed reading the posts here.

Posted - Mar 08 2009 : 06:38:43 AM I have to share a side affect of using an old spice bottle for my baking soda shaker. The spice bottle was cinnamon and now when I 'shake' every sprinkle is cinnamon. It smells so good to clean!!! lol

Posted - Mar 05 2009 : 6:09:13 PM That is a really cute idea - and yes those sweet lil' jars are jus' to pretty to cast off. And Nancy Jo had a good point about using it for glitter. Thanks so much for sharing. I'll look at my jelly jars differently from now on! Happy Crafting!

Posted - Mar 05 2009 : 07:58:36 AM Jennifer, thanks for sharing. I have been keeping glass juice jars (qt.) and though they have a narrower neck, I do the same for watering my seedlings I start in the house. The smaller lid size makes for more controlled watering and doesn't wash away the seeds when they are first planted in the loose potting soil. Works great. I've been using an ice pick to make the holes but I like the drill bit idea better and think I'll try that. Jami in WA

Posted - Feb 17 2009 : 07:02:43 AM You got me thinking about containers and I was about to throw away my little yogurt container and thought, I could use this for something.....and sure enough I could put seedlings into it this spring. :) This is leading to other things.

Posted - Feb 16 2009 : 1:01:58 PM Sandra, Bonne Maman is the brand name of the jelly the jars came in, I've found it in most chain grocery stores. It's from France. The labels look like a handwritten paper label. It think it is fancy but it is probably just the French version of Smucker's, ha.

Posted - Feb 16 2009 : 12:06:19 PM That is a good idea, I have plenty of little jars with tops. I use plastic peanut butter jars to store little leftover foods in the freezer for my grandmother I never used glass ones because I was afraid she would drop it. The plastic tops you can heat up a nail and poke holes in or drill them. I think the glass ones are so much prettier. |

Posted - Feb 16 2009 : 07:57:40 AM Great idea and for those of you who do not have a drill or the bit, just use a hammer and nail and tap them down on the other side of the lid to smooth them out.

Posted - Feb 04 2009 : 1:45:09 PM What a great way to use that cute Bonne Maman jar! :) The British version fo Country Living had a contest sponsored by Bonne Maman to see who could come up with clever uses for the jars. I'll have to see if I kept that one. They were all really good.
