Debbie Klann (#770, debbieklann) has received a certificate of achievement in Outpost for earning a Beginner Stargazing Chicks badge!

"I spent the first 2 weeks of October stargazing. I kept a journal of things that I was hoping to see, things that I did see and the weather.
The five brightest objects in the night sky are:
1. the moon
2. Venus - its clouds are highly reflectie
3. Jupiter - its sheer size
4. Mars
5. Mercury - the smallest planet in our solar system. It can only be seen during twilight hours because of its close proximity to the sun.

Ways in which stars differ from planets:
1. They are much farther away than planets
2. Stars have higher temperatures
3. Stars radiate energy so they are very bright.
4. Planets do not generate their own energy through nuclear reactions. They reflect sunlight, which is why they appear brighter in the night sky compared to stars.
5. Stars twinkle, planets do not. Their light may appear to change colors.

I diagrammed Ursa Major and my favorite constellation, Orion. It's always been the one that I look for."

Debbie Klann (#770, debbieklann) has received a certificate of achievement in Outpost for earning an Intermediate Stargazing Chicks badge!

"I kept a stargazing journal for almost 3 weeks this past October. The weather was nice for night viewing and early morning viewing. I kept track of the weather, when the stars came out and what events were upcoming that I wanted to see.
I was able to track Jupiter's moons over several nights. Binoculars worked ok but a telescope would be so nice!! We didn't have a light pollution to deal with but I was not able to see the Milky Way during those 3 weeks.

Our farm hosted an eclipse party in August 2017 as the eclipse was happening directly above us! We had several hundred people camping here for the weekend. What a once in a lifetime moment!"

Debbie Klann (#770, debbieklann) has received a certificate of achievement in Make It Easy for earning an Expert Macrame badge!

"For my final macrame badge, I decided to do something completely out there...because, why not?

My granddaughter is crazy about cats and has one very regal cat :) I decided that Kit needed her very own throne/hanging chair/bed!
This took awhile as I was still learning, and re-learning how to do different techniques, but I think it turned out fun!

After the hanging bed was finished, I was really missing a knotting project. My son in law saw a picture of one of these wallhangings and asked if I would make one to auction off at their sports fundraiser. I was happy to help out!
Doing these macrame badges have been one of my favorites...I think it's really relaxing and love how you can make something from literally nothing. I plan on doing more of it in my future. I have a new project in mind already.."

Debbie Klann (#770, debbieklann) has received a certificate of achievement in Make It Easy for earning a Beginner Music badge!

"The 3 basic elements of music are:

Melody: the sequence of notes that make up a song. Often the most memorable part of the song, often thought of as the tune. The pitch will vary during the song. A good melody is usually catchy and the central focus in many musical pieces.

Harmony: the combination of different musical notes played or sung simultaneously. It adds depth and context to the melody, enhancing the overall sound. It can evoke emotions, depending on the pleasantness of the sounds or the tension.

Rhythm: the backbone of the music, organizing the flow and pace. It is the pattern of chords and silences. It can be regular or irregular. It helps to create a sense of movement and can greatly influence the mood of the music.

I spent a couple of trips to town listening to different genres of music and was able to pick out the different elements in each: classical, country, top 10 and worship music. I noticed that depending on my mood, I would look for a certain style of music... maybe one with a stronger rhythm or just a fun melody. I also noticed that one of my favorite artist's music has a strong rhythm element in almost all of his songs. Kind of a fun experiment!"

"For my intermediate music badge, I researched 2 musical composers, both of whom I love their music. I was so surprised by how many similarities they shared! Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Sir Elton John.

I shared my research on the main forum."

Debbie Klann (#770, debbieklann) has received a certificate of achievement in Make It Easy for earning an Expert Music badge!

"I had started learning how to play the piano when I was young and wish I would have learned more!

I found a few fun piano facts:

The first piano was invented in 1700 in Italy by Bartolomeo Cristofori. There are only 3 left; the 1720 edition is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and is not truly playable at this point in time.

They are a high maintenance instrument, needing tuned regularly. They are considered both a stringed and percussion instrument. A piano has over 12,000 parts, consisting of keys, hammers, dampers, a bridge, a soundboard and strings. There are 88 keys and 230 strings; about 3 strings per key. Each string holds about 168 lb. of tension; 20 tons of tension per piano!

The 3 foot pedals are the soft, or unacord pedal; the sostenuto pedal for sustaining notes; and the damper.

A concert grand piano weighs over 1400 lb. and is just under 9 ft. tall (I had no idea!) A grand piano has a faster response than an upright piano because of their repetition layer. A musician can continue to play notes even before the first key returns to its original position. An upright requires the player to wait for the key to get back to the starting position before playing that note again.

AND...last but not least...Domingos-Antonio Gomes of Portugal holds the Guinness Book of Records for hitting the most piano keys in 1 minute....an incredible 824 notes in 1 minute...that's about 13 notes per second!! Set back in March 2017.

We have a Performing Arts Center in town and we have attended several concerts and musicals there over the years."

Debbie Klann (#770, debbieklann) has received a certificate of achievement in Outpost for earning an Expert Stargazing Chicks badge!

"During my stargazing I challenged myself to find new constellations. New favorites....Bootes, Casseopia and Pegasus. I spotted Betelgeuse, a red supergiant and very old star, in Orion's Belt. I was able to spot Saturn, Venus, Mercury, Uranus and Jupiter and followed it's moons for several nights. I also observed a very new moon and a very full moon, the harvest moon in October. The Orionid showers were just beginning at the end of my 3 week observation.

I have tried in the past to find constellations and other night sky objects with just a book and a flashlight and not a lot of success. I found a phone app called Sky Tonight and it was a game changer!! It is so easy to use, you can just hold it up to the sky and pan around and see what's out there! You can also search for different objects to find them and it has a calendar of upcoming events to watch for. It will definitely be staying on my phone!"

Diane Noble (#8283, Diane N) has received a certificate of achievement in Garden Gate for earning a Beginner Herbs badge!

"Five herbs:
1) rosemary... which is great to use with chicken/turkey
2) basil.... many uses great in tomato sauce or raw
3) thyme.... I use in my calm chowder
4) cilantro...I use in salsa and other Mexican dishes
5) oregano... which I dry and use in tomato sauce or with Greek chicken

So for tonight's dinner I used sage which I have still growing in my garden from the summer. I made a brown butter and added the sage and walnut pieces. I poured it over squash ravioli. It was delicious !"

"I put together a sewing basket for my daughter.
I made a pin cushion with some denim and cute chicken print fabric. She loved it !

It turn out nice. I used a box rather than a basket.
I think it will work better for her."

Amie Wright (#8717, AmiePrairie) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning an Intermediate Origami badge!

"Hello, on 1/18/26 I took a trip to a local Asian market and found a package of traditional origami paper. I came home and folded some of the written instructions included with the paper. I made a 3D star (extremely difficult to follow in picture form), a star and an adorable heart that would be fun to gift on Valentine's Day coming up.

On 1/22/26 I met with a new sister at a local coffee shop and we folded animals together using YouTube instructional videos MUCH easier and delightful with company and verbal instructions: I made a chicken (my favorite), fish and jumping frog (my family loves playing with it).

On 1/24/26 it was a drizzly cold Saturday at home and I decided it was perfect for origami laughter. I used YouTube again and made a tiger lily, rose (tuff) and a water lily (inside out lol). It made for a fun afternoon inside and warm.

I've really enjoyed exploring different techniques in my learning process. I do well with visual and verbal instruction vs. just paper visuals. I feel confident with the basic fold combinations and ready to take it up to the next level. Iv already started researching multiple paper projects. Thank you."

Amie Wright (#8717, AmiePrairie) has received a certificate of achievement in Stitching & Crafting for earning an Expert Origami badge!

"Hello, I had a very difficult time finding the right multi paper project to work on. I started and restarted many times till I came across a young lady on YouTube - Alliy Moon. She showed me how to use 8 pieces of 4x4 colored paper with a white side and colored side to fold a complex star shape that folded into the next, creating a chain that then collapsed in on itself to make a continuous circle. An infinity star ! It twists into 3 different shapes over and over forever.

I did take a picture to show, but it's honestly lackluster with the moving parts. I loved this process of seeing my learned skills come together to entertain myself and others. It took two days to make: 1/24 and most of 1/25. But it was worth every moment. It now sits on my mantle to show company what I created."

So far it has worked well because you get charged for store bags so keeping them in my car saves money."

Tina VanDaam (#8437, TinaTina) has received a certificate of achievement in Farm Kitchen for earning a Beginner Palate Pleasers badge!

"I earned this badge by making a list of different foods that I have tried. I like to try different foods. For this badge I wanted to try food from Africa. I am anxious to try it.

I was finally able to shop for the spices for my popular rice dish and look up some recipes and see what kind of spices these dishes would use. Yes, I have tried octopus, alligator and ostrich."
