I got 'er hemmed~put a funky trim on it.

Yes, I almost passed up the KA flour but thought I'd give it a shot. I'm not going to use it for the actual
bread though, just for the starter. Starting to think I should grow wheat~it's getting expensive because farmers
are growing corn instead.

Bonne, White Lilly flour is the best flour you can buy (short of the real expensive organic stuff)....my ex MIL has a diner for 35 years and she taught me to make her biscuits...only White Lily..I had used other brands and you could really tell the difference.
Not near as good..I believe they now have the whole wheat blend.

Nice to know Steph, I'd have to mail order it as it's regional
http://www.whitelily.com/WhereToBuy.aspx
, and then they only sell asst. 4 packs with other stuff~that would wind up getting very pricey.
Geez, you try and get something simple like flour and it's difficult.
Here's the MJ thread about the bread. http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=28238

We had some excitement around our house today. I can't say too much, but it involves a young man and a stolen car. He used our phone, but we didn't know that he was involved in stealing a car. He said that he was a victim, but didn't want to talk to the Sheriffs. Someone say, "Red Flag."

Bonne, I was afraid of that...I hate that DHL quit domestic delivery in the USA ....I bet you could mailorder it and the shipping would be cheaper than if I went through Fedex. When I lived in San Diego, CA I had to have my mom mail me my cajun seasoning and grits!! Couldn't find them anywhere..not even in the specialty shops.

Teresa, I know you and Caleb will be glad when this virus has passed...

Sharon, sorry to hear about more unwanted entertainment Hope it's not as bad as it sounds.

We don't have much going on around here. Usually, it is stolen cars that are left on our street, or someone is driving a stolen car and when they discover that our street is a dead end street, they usually abandon the car. It has been maybe about 7 years since anything has happened. Our area is so quiet.

I don't care for them either. He first said that someone pulled him out of the car. This young man was high school age. The car was on the street, one block east of us. My son was with the guy the longest, so he had a good description. The sheriffs were involved because there was some injuries and an ambulance was dispatched. When we heard the helicopter, then we called the sheriff. The sheriffs in our area are quick and on the ball when anything happens, which is very rare.

Oh, off the topic gals. We have a new neighbor, who is a costume designer for theater and for movies. She is going to the Miss America pageant to help with the contestants, to be sure that every one looks their best, and to help with alterations.

Only criminals we have are the "drop a dog(or entire litter of puppies) off in a nice country setting" type.
At least a dozen a year-always in the same spot!!!!

Jess, White Lily is cheap in our part of the USA.. Since Bonne went to all the trouble spending the big $$ for making the starter just thought I'd throw out that info on White Lily. Too bad she can't buy it out there. Great product at an reasonable price.

Sharon, what a cool new neighbor!! I've always admired costume designers...guess it's all that fancywork....that I love so much.

Don't know if any of you have ever purchased vintage patterns, books or magazines from Charlotte at vintagecat.com?? She was a passionate collector and loved the roadtrips hunting new vintage items to offer.

I haven't been to her site in some time and visited it tonight...and sadly, she has passed away after a long battle with cancer. So sad..such a nasty dam disease!

Autumn, I don't know how people can drop off the puppies like that. They should take care of their dogs, so that this doesn't happen. Our dog was rescued from a ravine. I am glad that my dh's co-worker and a man heard the crying, otherwise who knows what would have happened. Any animals left out become prey for the coyote, mountain lion, etc. We only see coyotes around here, but the mountain lions around here are really not that far away, but stay in the Arroyo near JPL.

Does White Lily have hard winter wheat now? Used to be only soft wheat, which is great for biscuits and pastry, but not for bread. Guess if I check out the website, I'll know. Many well known bakers used Gold Medal Better for Bread flour and it's just fine. High protein for bread, though all purpose works too. It's not difficult to bake bread or keep a sourdough starter, they're very forgiving and nothing is set in stone. Really and truly. I started watching my future MIL bake bread when I was about 8 and wasn't very old when I made some myself. Will be truthful in saying that bread was the only thing she was good at in the kitchen. She didn't like to cook and it showed.
Steph, the totes full are the storage totes, ones I can barely lift when they're full...not tote bags. Have a small fortune tied up in them, but they stack and keep the stuff inside safe.

I'm not a breadmaker....but I do know that Gold Medal flour is inferior compared to White Lily....Gold Medal spent a fortune on advertising but the southern women knew better. Kind of like some of the hot sauces you find on the grocery shelf...if they aren't made in Louisiana they aren't worth buying....just a little bit of my southern girl coming out..you'll have to excuse me. :0)

Ronna, what was I thinking when I said "tote bags"...how stupid of me...ROTFLOL

Ronna- wait wait....you have big plastic totes so full of vintage patterns, that you cannot lift them!?
...jeez louise! you need to start sewing!

non-sourdough Bread must be made with whole wheat flour...must...brand aside...either entirely whole wheat, or minimal all purpose added in(3 cups max)....Stone ground whole wheat is perfect....the only exception is cinnamon swirl bread, then you have to do all purpose flour for the whole thing...
I looove the smell of the bread after the yeast is added...such a happy smell...hmm...I think I'll make bread tomorrow....but, I'm gonna cheat...we got these yummy bread mixes from Amazon, whole wheat w/ ground flaz seed....YUM!....it makes fantastic dinner rolls too! still have to knead it, add yeast and let it rise twice though..so not entirely cheating...:P
anyways...
Steph- Zapps salsa...made in Louisiana...fantastic stuff...tried it?
their chips too....*mouth waters*...

Morning, gals.

Bonne...great dress. I might have to go on a pattern search. Thanks for posting all those suggestions! Yes, I feel a dress coming on.....I have an itching for some Amy Butler fabric, too. Oh wait...and a matching apron!! Uh oh, you may have started something really bad, here, Bonne (I tend to get a bit obsessive, too!)

Never heard of White Lily flour.....never saw it up here, either. Might have to look a bit harder. You gals that have it could ship it to those who don't...probably would be cheaper than ordering it online.

Ronna....I would give anything to have a tour of your storage bins....I can only imagine!!

Well, construction is going to slow this week...we have so much ice at the farm...and it is bitter cold...in the single digits. My contractor says they are still going to work...I feel so sorry for his guys! They use our little A-frame to warm up and have lunch and go potty!! So I feel better about that.

Sharon... there never seems to be a lack of excitement in your life...LOL!

Steph....the new website is great...love the images. My you have been a busy gal! Did you get any sleep at all last night????
