I thought all the free boxes at the post office were for priority mail only. I really don't want to spend almost $5 each to send them. I'll make it happen. did get a few tiny baby shoe boxes at Target last week before they hit the baler. I rarely write checks anymore, so don't go through them like I used to. At the grocery yesterday, they had 4 of the overripe banana bags full of overripe pears @$1.49 each, so brought them home and made pear butter. It's so good. Used spiced cider from Trader Joe's for the liquid and brown sugar. Let it slow simmer all night and it's ready now. I won't can it, will freeze it in small portions to add to my yogurt in the morning..or toast...or just a spoonful cause it tastes so good. Will be gone before I know it. Have any of you bought the Sew Sommerset mag? Quite a few really cool ideas in there. Wish they werent so pricey to buy. |

Ruth - Our Wally Worlds (walmart) here in the Atlanta area have been without fabric for over a year! And now it looks as if the yarn will be discontinued as well! So I'm stocking up on Peaches and Creme! Gotta keep myself in sponges and dishcloths!!!
Naomi - I LOVE your vintage etsy shop! I used to wear vintage clothes and accessories back in the day. I was an actress at the time so I could get away with being a little "out there"! Now, I'm thinking our local Publix or Wally World would be "confused" to say the least if I dressed that way now! But I promise you this, I WILL be that crazy old lady in the hat and gloves when I'm 90!!

Ronna~Your pear butter sounds so yummy. I will have to see if I can find some pears on clearance. Will you be sending the games with my starter? I need to send you a check~let me know what the total is.
I love my brownies chewy and fudgy. I will have to give this recipe a try.
I don't know if any of the stores around here will have the MJF fabric. I will have to see.

Dana~That stinks. There isn't too much yarn to choose from at our Walmart. Clean them out and stock up before you can't find it anymore. So sad.
Well, I managed to get the living room all clean. It looks so good but it won't last. Oh~well~we have the lived in look here. Definitely not what you would see in a magazine but it's clean. Vacuumed all the floors and now I just need to run the dry mop under the couch, vacuum doesn't fit. Other than that all the dust and hair is collected. Between the dog, my daughter and me our vacuum works double time and don't forget the ash from the woodstove. Good thing it's a canister that I can empty and not bags.
I think we are having chicken and biscuits tonight. Ruth

And Ronna- totally know what you mean about not writing many checks...I use my debit cards and paypal all the time, and have a full box of checks that I've had for like 3 years, and my check book, I'm only on like check #10 ...they won't be any good once we move...new address and new bank...

Dana, I'm right there with you on the wardrobe part..I'm well on my way to being an ecentric old woman..wouldn't have it any other way. Makes people wonder what you're up to or they think your nuts and always leave you alone..LOL
Nay, I know what you mean..when we had the place in Alabama and wanted to sell it I was struggling with having to put all of it in a storage room so you could actually see the rooms...LOL Luckily someone that we knew wound up buying it to get ownership of the historic cemetary we had...saved alot of work on my part. First time I've ever sold a piece of property where the house was secondary in order of importance!

Ruth: OMG the hats came today!!! I have mine on and am wearing it in the house!! So warm and cozy. Cannot wait to give the others to the kids I have them chosen for.
Bonne: Went to my other email today and sent your paypal off for the brown beret. I have been wearing Evy's green one with my green jacket this week. Sorry it took so long to send the money. I always forget to check that account.
Well, TGIF!! It was a long week with the state tests and starting drama club. Plus with Kenny sick, it was so loooong!! He is feeling better tonight and asked for meat for dinner, so I made pork chops with applesauce (remember the Brady Bunch?) and rice. He looks better today too.

Jess: Love the apron on your blog and the bread too!!
I started that quilt with all the millions of pieces last night at the class. I have two blocks done already and some of the border. This year I am making all of my stash disappear before I buy tons more. I mean it this time too! :)

Sheryl-lyn~that's my plan too. Let's hold each other to that. ;) We'll do "de-stashing buddy check". lol
Autumn!! YAY!!! See, you thought you couldn't sew your own clothes and now perfect strangers comment favorably on them. You totally underestimate yourself gal! Next I'm working on Carol Sue. You gals that haven't sewn your own clothes but crank out these fabulous quilts need to have some confidence in yourselves! First off, find yourself a vintage sewing book. Simplicity put out some great ones in the 60's and 70's that give you basic construction info (zippers, facings, darts etc.) I've found many at the thrift store and also Ebay: http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=m38&_nkw=simplicity+sewing+book&_sacat=See-All-Categories CHEAP!

Those basic sewing technique books are always on the shelves in the thrift stores around here and always very reasonable. Our local Goodwill Book store hasn't heard of the new regulations concerning children's books and media as of Feb.10th or whatever that date is...will be interesting to see what happens in the children's clothing departments of the thrift stores too.

Shamefully-I have at least 2 of the above mentioned books!! I have to confess-I learn by pictures-I have NEVER enjoyed reading. Even for information-shameful,huh? I will repent-AFTER MONDAY!!!!
I bought 3-4 pieces for my mass produced dress. I need to make them before I run out of steam!!!
Sure wish I could remember what I've read here in the last few pages but alas the sugar from the divine cakes at the shower have dulled my mind and I don't see any signs of regaining vision and energy tonight-soooooo Happy Friday to all of you and keep on sewing!!!!

Okay, here is the story of my adventure : In Search Of A Treadle. Well, it started out ok, I had called the woman and arranged to meet her at three o'clock so that Zan and I could go to the movies at 4:30 in Waterville. The ad said Waterville, but this woman actually lived in a tiny town called Mercer. I have lived in Maine most of my life, but have never heard of this place. So Zan and I headed out for Waterville, she had a little recon planned for a local thrift store. After we secured what she was looking for, we heqaded to JoAnn's where I picked up a little something for the mini aprons. Then we decided we'd better head for Mercer. We had tried mapquest and google to find some sort of hints on how to get there. An hour later we were still flailing around on the back roads of Hell, I mean Mercer. There are only four roads in the town, we were looking for Beech Hill Road but the people who dwell in Mercer don't believe in putting any road signs up. Eventually we got on what turned out to be the correct road and went down a long road into the woods to the house of the woman who was selling this machine.
After we had looked at the machine and decided it would be just the ticket, I went outside to back the van a little closer to the house, and fell down and really jarred my hand and shoulder. After a little swearing I managed to stand up and stagger off to the car, We finally managed to wedge the machine in the rear of the van and started back to Waterville, with new directions, ones that did not include driving around a maze of back roads, all nicely iced up. Zan was about ready to kill me, and I was feeling like driving into the nearest lake. I did see some cars out on the ice, so I knew that wouldn't help.
Tomorrow I will have to go back to the store that sells the belts for these old machines, but we decided since we had had such an awful time, some sort of reward so we headed to my favorite salvage store, the home of fabulous cheap fabric and clothing, bits and pieces of all sorts of stuff. We checked the clothing first, it is always amazing to me when I see things like copper colored metallic jeans in my size. Bad planning on someone's part, because not only did they have metallic jeans, they had what I consider soap opera clothes too, in my size. There isn't much call for heavily sequined clothes in my neighborhood. Then we checked out the shoes, always a guaranteed laugh. Size ten yellow hooker booots with five inch spike heels and many, many buckles. They also had gold lame Maryjanes in my size too. Then lots of shoes that look like something you might need if you worked in a chemical plant or gutted fish.
I told myself it would be okay to check out the fabrics, because I was looking for something for Carol Sue. That was fun, Eventually my daughter threatened to slap me silly if I didn't get out of there, so we worked our way to the front of the store. Zan stopped to admire quart jars of hair gel, and also a real surprise, bald guy head wipes. This amused us no end. her dad was bald and we were sorry he was no longer here, because we would have bought him some.
We got home aroud quarter of eight, having missed the movie time, and discovered a new inch of snow in the driveway, just enough to make going up the driveway kind of a cheap thrill ride. I wasn't sure we were going to make it, but we finally fishtailed our way to the top....
I think we'll wait until Sunday and see if we can get my son out here to help us extricate the machine from the car. I have been sitting here at the computer, with a large bag of frozen peas on each shoulder trying to work up enough energy to stagger off to bed. What a day.....
