I cleaned out my flower beds this weekend and found most of the snapdragons still alive! We had temps at -20 this winter and 6 feet of snow. I just can't believe they are still green! Well, I guess I'll have lots of snapdragons this year. I had spread their seeds all over in those beds in the fall not realizing that the mother plants would survive the winter.
I also found an old silver plated spoon. We often get silverware, pieces of pottery, old square nails and large rusty spikes, bits of old lumber, glass and old jewelry heaved out of the ground or dug up in the spring.
Also, I found hundreds of amaranth seedlings up in another flower bed. We're still in the teens at night and apparently they are another tough one. I must have dropped seeds in the fall when I was harvesting the ones growing there.
I also have new tulips from seeds they had produced last year. I just spread those seeds in another bed and I have leaves sprouting. I'm aware they won't bloom this year. But that's ok. They will someday and they were free! I'm anxious to see what they look like. I have so many different kinds of tulips in the bed that produced the seeds that I'm just hoping the pollination produced something pretty.
I just love volunteers.
What amazing things have you discovered in your yard?

I still have snow a foot deep between the raised beds that I garden in, but I peeked to see what, if anything, was going on, and the strawberries are showing some small green leaves! I'm going to sprinkle my columbine seeds from last year's plants in a flower bed or two, they are such hardy little devils. The brilliant blue scilla siberica is just starting to bloom in my front yard, the snowdrops are hanging in there and the daffs are shooting up. Years ago when I had a big veggie garden we would often turn up bits of pottery and old rusty chains and nails. It is fun to see these tiny windows to the past. There is an old foundation on the place I live now I've been meaning to explore, all you can see are the big rocks and the big bunch of rhubarb, but I figure there's got to be some little tokens from the past....

I was very happy to see that the daylilly's Miss Bee Have sent me are coming up--there are some early ones greening up right now. My Globe Alliums are coming up..and it looks like they've multiplied. I didn't know they did that, but there are more of them than I planted for sure, so that's kindof nifty :)
We had such a lovely day yesterday, and it looks like my vidalia onions jumped 3 inches overnight! Love this time of year!!!!
