My truest friend, Robin, who lives several states away from confided in me, first, that she had breast cancer. This was around October 25th. Then she dropped off the planet! I about died. I called and called and called. Finally she called back. I about cried the whole time on the phone. She said, "Gawd, Cyn, if I had known you'd cry I don't think I would have called. Gawd, now I'm crying." We both laughed and started talking about some of our better shared memories.
She found out before Christmas that the tumor was too big to operate on so now she's hooked up to a machine, chemo.
I didn't send her a Christmas card, you would have to know her to know that it was the best. She's a hard gal, that cusses, drinks, and loves to party. We are very different.
I want to get her something but I don't know what. She grew up in Clinton, MI, and she is all country but stuck in Austin without a horse.
I've read so many wonderful suggestions here I thought maybe someone might have a wonderful idea for me. She's not into pink... she doesn't make this easy.
The best thing about her, is that no matter how harsh life is for either one of us, we look at the other as a role model for coming through it.

I dig Farm boys? They are for sale on teh MaryJane website...cute and funny both. You are so swet to be such a good friend to her. I hope she lets you help.

| What about a favorite CD or a book for when she doing her chemo? Some old Johnny Cash or ??? Whatever would interest her or make her laugh. Your friend is so lucky to have you right now (though she may not reach out often) as you understand that what might be right for you is not necessarily right for her at this time. I sent my girlfriend with breast cancer, litte gummy ints that are made in Italy. They come in lots of flavors and are really good for when you feel sick from chemo and don't want alot in your mouth. as they are only about 3/8" big. I get them at a local candy shop. I also got books, coupons for movies and popcorn. Try to find out what sounds good to her to eat and then get some deluxe version of it. It really is hard. I understand how you feel.

There is a company called Toby and Max. They make bracelets with sayings, there are two which come to mind. They are made out of sterling silver. One is a sterling silver cuff with bumps on it (it's called "Bumpy Road" and engraved on the inside of the bracelet where you can't see it...is "it will be alright", the other is a plain silver cuff that says "i am a survivor" inside. These may not be her style, but I was thinking that since the words are on the inside, they just might be for her. My other idea is kind of off the wall, but I met a lady once who had just lost her hair due to cancer. She went to a henna artist and had a beautiful temporary henny tatoo done all over her head. You could buy her a henna kit. I hope no one takes offense to that idea. I was really inspired by that woman, because it was such a bold thing to do. I hope you find just the right thing.

Thank you all for advice! I'm going to start making her a care package with a little bit of everything that's was listed. Anything to get her smiling during this time would make the world a little brighter for all.
I'll post when I get it ready and when she get's it.

What about arranging to have meals delivered to her? Could you find a caterer or some service like Meals on Wheels for the elderly that would do that?

During my senior year of high school a dear friend of mine was diagnosed with cancer and I also shaved my head. And I must suggest a wonderful gift for a beautiful bald head is RED lipstick. We both wore the same shade while she went through chemo. Robin is in my thoughts. Please pass along our farmgirl love.
ps. if she would wear a baseball cap, a freehand embroidered one with a saying perfect for her might be fun too!

Thank you for all the ideas! I chatted with her today and she said the chemo isn't horrible just makes her tired. I picked up a couple of greating cards both horse themes one funny one heart felt. I'll be putting together loads of hard candy, cowgirl stuff, hats.
I would love to shave my head and I admire those of you who have done so in support of a friend, I can't think of a better way to show love and support. My hubby said no to the idea of me doing it. I went through some rough hormone change last year and my hair became so damaged that I had all my long hair cut off to a an inch! My hubby understood the need but he wasn't happy about it. If I lived closer to her I would shave my head regardless of my lovable hubby. It's a best-friends-for-ever-and-ever thing isn't it?
Red lipstick... I love the idea. I hardly ever wear makeup and she's always teasing me about it cause she does everyday. I will buy two, send one, then send her a pict of me wearing mine... she will get a kick out of it. Humor is the best medicine.
Cowboy boots.. I wish I could afford them. I think I'll make her an ornament out of wood, paint it red or pink so she can hang in her truck.

This week, I found out a neighbor of mine has breast cancer, and she told us the biggest help we could give would be food (her hubby does not cook and he is a lobbyist for the Florida legislature, which is about to begin). That comment made me think of MJF's food pouches, and how easy they would be for someone not feeling well or someone who cannot cook a lot, to make for a good dinner. So consider them for a gift idea! Some hot soup mix....yum.

| Just talk, talk, talk!!! Send stupid cartoons! You can stick them on a post card, covered with clear packing tape (so they don't catch on the postal equipment). My neighbor and friend is almost finished with her chemo, so I can hug her any time. It's tough when you're far away, maybe because we imagine so much, but I love the lipstick idea--and I don't even wear the stuff! |
