Ok- so I have a VERY important fundraiser to go to in which I am the key guest speaker- and it is "cocktail" attire- whatever that means! I really don't have any 'cocktail' attire, that I know of- I have some beautiful summer-spring dresses- but just for little family get togethers and such- This fundraiser is for a childrens advocacey program, and for the womens crisis council- I want to look stylish, but sort of professional at the same time- I'm tall with the 'hourglass'figure- just all my hourglass parts are a 12 size- so don't know what to do! Suggestions?

A dress suit would work nicely and pass as cocktail attire. You would get more miles out of it too. A classic black dress can be used over and over again as well. Have fun finding something for you!

I was going to say a little black dress or pants suit would be perfect. You could always spruce it up with a colorful or patterned shirt if needed!
Your fundraising event sounds like lots of fun.

| If there is a Dress Barn store near you, they have some very nice little black dresses for a reasonable price. Hope this helps. |

I second the Dress Barn comment. They have a lot of really nice cocktail dresses. I'm also a big fan of JCPenney.com. They're always reasonably priced.

I would definitely look at Chicos. I have several of their Travelers pieces and they are easy to dress up or down. If you have a store nearby, it is worth checking their bargains on the clearance rack. They are always discounter more than marked.

Hi Sandra, a black dress that you are comfortable in, with a nice pair of shoes, heels if you prefer and PEARLS! You can get nice white beads that look like pearls or you can get a simple strand and then get a single fake pearl drop earrings if you have pierced ears. And don't forget your hand bag. You can take anything and dress it up and make it cocktail attire. That's what I do when I go out. Always depends on where I am going and what for, but taking something basic and dressing it up. If you are up for heels you can always have your heels make the statement. Wear a black dress and some fun printed shoes. You'll feel stylish! Let us know how it goes! Farm Girl Hugs!

Thank you everyone! I'm going for the black-pearls-and killer shoes- I'll post pics after the whole shindig! And thanks for the tips on where to go- my usual attire is jeans,(Carharts), a t-shirt or long sleeve button up duck cloth shirt I use for welding- not very cocktailish!

Try your local resale shops. I have found wonderful barely used name brand clothing (not to mention other stuff) for next to nothing. The last time I need to dress my total outfit was $15.00 and that included a very cool bag to go with it. You do have to spend a bit of time looking but well worth the time and money if you do not need those fancy outfits all the time.

Reuse recycle. I'm with Betty Jo for next time. You can find outstanding outfits at the 2nd hand stores and them have then custom fitted by yourself or a friend. It's designer then and not off the rack:) AND it cost way less, fits better, & you get to create a little bit of you in the piece. Now that's the farmgirl way !!!!!!!!
Break a leg ... you go girl !!!!!!!!!
With much respect & gratitde

i love thrift. even though it didn't work out this time, browse the racks for great silk scarves, belts, and a colorful tailored jacket you can use to change the look of your new black dress. a black dress is like a great pair of jeans, there are so many possablitities.

Hi ya'll! Ok- so the BIG event is tomorrow evening! ( my stomach is churning- but I'll do well once I get up there- it's just the getting up there in front of everyone!) I found this AMAZING slip on dress, with the satin under dress and a chiffon drapey, swingy skirt- the only thing is- it is the color of Ruby Red grapefruit- the flesh of it- but it fits so well- I'm comfortable in it- and I can wear it for so many different things- it's not really "cocktailish" on it's own- but- with the pearls- my heels, jewlery, and scarf- it will be bang-a-lang-ing! Plus- with the new heels-and the dress- my whole "new" outfit cost was $28.00!! I found a Macy's outlet where the prices were already cut 75%- (from original price in regular Macy's)- and on top of THAT cut the items were an additional 75% off because they were 'slightly' damaged- (the dress had a teeny tear on the inside of the armhole where the dress was too small for someone and it tore when they took it off)- and I couldn't find a thing wrong with the heels- SO! I'll be posting pics soon!

Sandra, can't wait to see. Sounds absolutly FAB, especially since you are so comfortable with it.
