Hi - My name's Pam and I live in rural Iron County, Missouri. My husband and I are originally from Chicago (real city kids) and have always wanted to live in the country, about 18 years ago we got transferred to St. Louis and started looking for property! Six years ago we found our 120 acre Ozark farm and began to put the house back up along with the barn! We retired down here in 2003 and are excited on a daily basis that we have a small farm to run. We have three grown boys, the last one is in college, so it's all up to us.
We have 34 goats, this spring our kidding season brought our numbers to 78 goats! We have six cows with their calves, one even had twin girls this year, two livestock guardian dogs, ducks, turkeys and about 70-80 hens. I guess you could say we're surrounded by animals and loving it. Somewhere in all this we even manage to find time to put in a large garden and do a lot of canning. I love strawberry and blueberry jam in the middle of winter.
I can't wait to meet other "farm girls" and share ideas.

I'm new here too! I'm so excited to see how this all works! Don't you just feel all fuzy inside when you've spent the day doing what you love? I think we should feel fortunate, I wouldn't want it any other way. Hopefully we'll meet up again! Jennifer

Wow - thanks for the welcome! I agree with you, the feeling you get inside is unreal when you are doing what you love. I just look around my farm every morning and again every evening and I do feel very fortunate. Again - thanks for the welcome. Pam

Hi Pam and welcome to the MJF forum! I envy you gals who get to live out your dreams and wish I was a whole lot younger. I lived on a farm as a kid and my best memories are of those times. Now I tinker in my very small garden on my very small city lot but still have a farmgirl heart. Welcome and I hope you'll enjoy this forum as much as I do.

It is awesome having the blessing of doing what you love :) I enjoy canning too and just froze quite a few quarts of Blueberries, Strawberries and Pie Cherries for the winter but now I am thinking of taking out some Strawberries and making jam :) Today will be working on Pear Jelly and Maybe some Pear Pie Filling :) I'm glad you found us and look forward to your posts :)

Hi - I want to say thanks again for welcoming me with such open arms! I spent the day today with a good friend, milking her Jerseys and then learning how to make mozzarella cheese. We've made farmer's cheese before and it came out great. What fun working with the cows and then "creating" the cheese. I have some dairy goats that will kid in the late fall and we'll try our hand at goat cheese too. I'm still in the process of canning and freezing the last few items from the garden and then I'll be done. Hope you all have a great evening. Pam

Welcome.
New here too. I would love to have a milk cow too.. or goat. I just can't make myself want to milk everyday. maybe if someone else would do it half the time! Haha.. I know that isn't how it works. I would love to make cheese too. haven't tried it yet but have looked at lots of recipes for it.

Welcome Pam! You are going to love it here. You'll definitely have to check out the Farm Kitchen forum and Barnyard Buddies forum. I know you are going to just love it here-I know I sure do-everyone is just so sweet and kind. I have learned so much that I fear I may burst at the seams!!!

Well welcome neighbor! Okay, so maybe we aren't technically neighbors, but we are close! I wish I was in the position to move on out of the city like you did... the peace, quiet and blanket of stars every night must be absolutely fantastic!!! Next time you make it up here, let me know... there will always be a good cup of coffee waiting!

Morgan - I will definetely let you know when I'm in St. Louis - I do my Christmas shopping up there! It took my husband and I almost 30 years to make the move to the country, we're here six years now and loving every minute of it! Well - maybe not when the goats escape - buy yeah - the rest of the time it's great!~
Kristen - Lots of goats are fun - but sometimes really frustrating - like when they escape the fencing we were convinced was "full proof"!!!
