Last night, a girlfriend and I were having a glass of wine along with homemade whole spelt bread and a cheese spread called Boursin. We were getting silly from the wine and started talking about ironing "in the days" with pleats and ruffles. At the same time, we remembered the Dr Ben Casey and Dr Kildare blouses. But then we were trying to remember what a blouse with a flap -side style front with a ruffle along the edge was called.
Does anyone remember this blouse?

Hmmmm, I never heard of either of those names. I was raised in Illinois; maybe we called them something else here. My friend was either in Utah or Colorado at the time. I'll ask her if either name is familiar.

I had several from the 60's that I bought thrifting, when I was a dark and brooding little goth girl....we also called them poet's blouses. I even had a cream colored lace one--so great with my black riding boots and black leggings. I fancied myself Lord Byron :)

graduated in 1969..i remember a lot of poet type blouses..but the ones with the side angled button ones had a different name..can't remember..i know there was also the high collar ones that buttoned across the front at an angle..napoleon style..
i bought some beautiful material a few years ago and haven't sewn it up yet..it is multicolor dyed in splotches and has bits of sparkle and embroidery in it..it reminded me of the 60's..and i wanted to make some kind of peasanty type top with it to go with jeans (i'm a jeans girl)..but i haven't found a pattern yet..i'm heavy so it will have to be a larger pattern..that covers a lot

Remember the 'bye bye birdie' rib tickler tops? It was a sleeveless top that showed the midriff with ruffles on the bottom. It was the one that Ann Margaret wore in "Bye Bye Birdie". That was around the early 60's.

No I sure do not remember the 'bye bye birdie' rib tickler tops.
And I don't remember shirts called poets but you all have described it perfectly.

de ja vu (sp?). I remember the rib tickler. (Was not allowed to have one,) Also, I had a couple of those off center ruffled blouses, with the stand up collars. Haven't thought of those in years. I don't think they were called poet shirts. But the ruffle would remind one of that. Wow, take me back. Funny, I was just thinking of the Dr. Ben shirt the other day, and couldn't remember the doc's name.
