How many of you love to wear clothes-coats, panchos, sweaters, sleeveless tops, cardigans, etc--made from alpaca, llama, or sheep wool?Most of the ones that I've seen are expensive, but I love the way they feel. And yes, you Can wear wool in the summer--check out some of the sleeveless wool tops. I want to learn to knit so I can make my own wool clothes. wool doesn't have to be itchy and some of the fashions out there are are incredible. Just wonder if any one else is in love with wool.

I just knitted a prairie shawl from Peruvian Highland wool and llama fur! I wear it constantly, because it is soooo soft and not at all scratchy. You can see the shawl in my bio in the Back to the Land henhouse!

| Cindy, find those knitting lessons. There is a world of lovely natural fibers and knitting related sites out there. I enjoy making shawls the most. The yarn is a pleasure to handle, and wearing it is like wrapping yourself in a hug. |

I love to wear them, but I don't like knitting them....honestly, I just don't have the time and to complete a large project for me is difficult (especially with a 4 month old!)...which reminds me, I'm still knitting her sweater for Autumn!

Never :( I am allergic to real wool, it itches so bad and it gives me a rash. I CAN sometimes wear blends though. But I never knitted with the material you mentioned

If its wool I love it!!! I never even really put my sweaters away in the summer because there is always airconditioning and it never really gets that hot in Vermont.Wool is the greatest for warmth in the winter. I get lots of my wool sweaters in thrift and consignment; sometimes even find the cashmere. i think people get a sweater for Christmas gifts and can't wear them for some reason.I went to a fiber featival last month and had a great time seeing all the fiber and animals. My new motto is fiber people are happy people. i will learn how to knit soon. |

I think I know what happens to all those Christmas wool sweaters that people give to the resale store--they all ended up as recycled bags at a booth at the local farmer's market! Our farmer's market allows hand-made items and there was one booth there with lots of items made from old sweaters. I've made a shopping bag and some "doggy bags" (since I live in town, we have an ordinance about picking up after your dog) so I used the sleeves to fashion some pouches to carry those plastic shopping bags in. I love llamas and alpacas and anything made from their wool--someday I'd like to own about five or six alpacas. I haven't been to any fiber fairs but would love to attend one--I have seen fiber art displayed by local artists. I love to create but don't know much about working with fiber--maybe I'll check with the local arts center to see if their are any groups for fiber artists around here. i agree that fiber people are happier people--heck, farmgirls are just happier all-around people.

As we speak I have a bag full of old sweaters to repurpose. The ones with holes are going to get felted and used as Purse? Pillows? Cute animals? |

I like the idea of cute animals--fuzzy little teddy bears and owls. Do you have any ideas for Christ mas ornaments? I know it's the end of June, but you gotta start planning early...

Christmas ornaments are a good idea! I have lots of beads too I could bead them. This is the time of year I look for Christmas presents. For some reason I seem to have more money in the summer. Some folks even make quilts out of old sweaters but I need some thing less complicated like a pincushion! |

I saw some postcards made from old wool sweaters at the farmer's market--next time I go, I'll buy some and could send you one so you can see how they're made. I would have bought some but was sworn to buying only edibles. I also saw some really cute shopping bags made from old cat, dog, and chicken feed bags.

I don't know when I'll get back to the farmer's market--they probably won't have it on the Fourth. I'll try to go on the 11th. and hopefully I can get some goodies then.

I wear wool all the time! I love spinning alpaca, it's so soft. I just learned to knit, after one lesson from my amazing artist friend...I was knitting! I have since learned to knit, purl, cast off...and amazing I can decrease, yet not increase yet. Following stitched patterns is hard with a busy three year old underfoot. So I just got with it! Knitting is not that hard. Look on Youtube for the german style, it's the way I learned and very economizing with your hand movement. I do alot of crafts and am so careful how I use my hands.
One of my recent projects using handspun yarn!
Oh my gosh! I just realized something (mommy brain). There's a super fun fiber festival at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown, Wa. September 19th! I'll be there carding & spinning (also vending my wool products). It's free, and the local Wool gatherer's chapter will be there. It's all about demo's & more! Prariehawk, you should totally go! Sayra--your knitting is awesome! do you have your own spinning wheel?
do you use natural dyes? I would love to go to the Fiber festival, but Illinois is a long way from Washington.LOL I have a book on knitting (it came with a round plastic loom) but I haven't really tried my hand at it yet. I'm waiting for it to get good and cold because otherwise I like to be outside and knitting is more of an indoor activity. there is a knitting/needlecraft group that meets once a month and I hope I can attend their meeting this month. that would help a lot. I taught myself the basics of embroidery so I should be able to learn to knit. It looks like it would be fun as well as practical. I went to a Victorian festival this weekend and there were some ladies dyeing wool using goldenrod and other natural sources for color. It looked like a lot of work But the colors were really gorgeous. Happy wool-gathering!
