...when it keeps pouring down rain? This has been one of the wettest, if not the wettest, Octobers on record. I've never had a garden before, and I have two plots that I want to get ready for next spring, and I plan on planting some winter wheat as a cover crop, but it just won't stop raining!! Now I know how frustrating farming can be, and I haven't even started!! I sure wish it would stay dry long enough to plant something.

It sure can be fun sometimes, trying to get things done, while fighting the weather. The only thing I do is watch the forecasts. And try to get the work done, before the weather turns bad. You may just have to put off planting that cover crop till next year. We are dealing with lots of mud here right now too. After a dry summer, we sure needed the rain and snow!

How can the average person (not a farmer) get a hold of a winter crop to put over a organic vegetable garden? The Chicago Botanic Garden use a barley and I think wheat mix for their gardens. I don't know where I can buy a small amount of seed for my little bed.

I can get the seed from my feed store. A more challenging store for you to find Dawn. If you need, I could send you a small amount.

We use red clover, winter rye or some other kind of "green" like rape, turnip or mustard.
These seeds are so small they can be broadcast
Hope the rain turns off for a bit for you

I hope the rain stops here too! Everything is on the brink of flooding and it is pouring like crazy still! If Michele sends me the seed, I will put it down next week. Hopefully the rain will stop by then, otherwise it will float out of the bed!

sunflower seeds! They're a great cover crop. :) That's what we use!
Starbucks and sushi to green fried tomatoes and corn pudding-I wouldn't change it for the world.

Megan, will the seeds work in the winter? I'm just southwest of Chicago, so we get extreme winds, cold, and snow.

Thank you so very much for the rye seed Windy Pines! I got them on Saturday. I really appreciate you sending them to me. I planted them and hopefully they will have a chance to get established before the ground freezes. We have had a very warm November and the 10 day outlooks is chilly but not freezing.
