Hey Ruth. Good to hear form you. Are you having fun? I have 2 dogs that are sisters and they are 13 too. Sometimes they act like little 100 year lod ladies. Zoe cannot hear a thing, poor dog. I have snuck up on her, not intentionaly, and scared her to death. And she's constantly pooping and peeing. But then sometimes she runs around like a puppy too. Her sister Sophie is not as bad. They are both so cute. Have fun and enjoy your vacation.
I am going to take the kids to Chattanooga tomorrow to do some free stuff. We have the best aquarium here. It's got this neat concrete stream that runs all around the buildings and the kids can wade all over. Then on the other side there are steps leading down to the river with water running down them with a big shallow pool at the bottom. It's great. And free! They love going there. We have not been at all this summer. We used to go all the time. Then we will go to Coolodge Park where there is a big water fountain that people go in. It's very fun. We used to do that all the time too but now we have to pay to park there. We'll go anyway. I am just trying to not spend any money. I'll take a lunch. Before we go to the wet places I want to take them to the Hunter Museum. They have the coolest sculpture garden. And it's free. We can also ride the city bus for free too. That's fun. Then go to my mom's and let them go in the little creek behind their house. It's nice and shaded and there are cool places to sit and put my feet in. I love it there. So I hope we can have a nice day. It's going to be HOT so a good day to swim.

Your trip sounds like a lot of fun Kris.
It was back to work for me today -- 10 hour days -- but I did take a peek at the garden -- more zuchinnis and lots of blossoms. We picked a brocolli head and I saw enough weeds to keep my busy next weekend. My oregano is very happy and finally my basil shows some stamina. And the lemon balm was scenting the air from the slight rain we had earlier -- a good ending to a day.
Be well my friends. Suzanne |

Kris...sounds like an awesome day planned for the kids and you. Nothing better when HOT weather hits but to find water and stay cool! I remember as a kid just spending everyday at the city pool with my brother & sister and friends. And then when mom and dad came by we would vie for their attention...so we could show them how long we could hold our breath underwater or how great our cannon-ball off the side of the pool was or how we could execute the perfect Olympic Dive off the diving board! With three kids all yelling, "Watch me!", we probably drove our parents NUTS but they never let us know that. LOL
So, enjoy and remember...you're making memories and it isn't costing you a thing... {except parking}!
Hugs, ~peggy

It is just too hot out there do anything anymore. We had to walk across the Walnut St. bridge to get to the water fountain. It's a long walking bridge now. It's the oldest bridge in Chatt. going over the river. And the highest. So we got hot. Then had to walk to the aquarium too. But they had fun. I had $3.00 and on the way to mom's stopped at Wendy's and got them Frosties. It was a good day though. They are all back at their mom's now. It's nice and peaceful here.
My garden looks awful right now. Even with the rain we had Monday.
Suzanne, 10 hours is a long day. What do you do?
PeggyAnn, those are some good memories. I get that all the time with my 3. "Watch me!" I get dizzy!

Hot and Sunny Summer Days...you can't beat them for good memories. I picked my first zucchini out of my Garden today (medium size) all ready in the skillet for dinner. LOL

Hi sisters...just found you girls. Last nite I made stuffed peppers and froze some peppers. I make them in the crockpot and they were yummy. Made some zucchinni with mushrooms too. Tonite I picked my first eggplant and my GS got so excited because it grew so much overnite. We picked our first tomatoes also and more peppers and zuchinni. I do believe I have a little farmboy in the making! My garden is doing fabulous this year. I planted my squashes, peppers, cucumbers, snap peas, wax beans and green beans in pallets. I put newspaper around the plants and covered that with straw and newspaper and straw in the walkways. I have NO weeds and next year I will plant everything in pallets. My husband thought I was crazy but he has since changed his mind. GS and I baked zucchini and peach bread and zucchinni applesauce yesterday also. He told his mother tonite when she called that he could now cook and bake for her. He's 6. He also informed his brother that before you open a can you need to wash it good. His 8 yo brother asked him how he knew that and he said, "Dante, Nanny told me. Don't you know people touch them and they're dirty?" I guess he was listening as he was stirring and mixing. Of course they loved the food. It makes my heart feel good to know they know what the veggies are and that all food doesn't just end up in cans on a shelf in a store. Well hope you all have luck with your gardens too.

Darlene...adorable story about your Grandson. How cute! I like to think that us Grandma's are growing something even finer than the produce in our gardens. Those little hearts and minds need all that Grandma love and wisdom they can get. We are helping grow souls for Eternity. And aren't they so much fun to love on???

Hi Darlene. Glad you joined us here. That's so neat that your little grandsons are learning to cook from their grandma and loving it. That's the best place to learn. And they get so much love too. I have 3 granddaughters and they love to help me in the kitchen. And they ususally eat whatever they fix too. So great learning experiences come from the kitchens of us nana's and mimi's and grandma's. And it's so much fun too. I did not let my 2 daughters help alot in the kitchen when they were young. But now they ask me how to make this or that. And they do cook. I was always in a hurry or just didn'y want to be bothered back then. But with grands it's just so different. Keep it up.

Peg and Kris thanks for the nice comments. I remember good times in the kitchen with my GM and I am glad my GS are making them with me. At Christmas we bake cookies and make candy. At Easter this year we made Choc and white choc covered pretzel rods and I let them roll them in different sprinkles, nuts and toasted coconut etc. We also made other candies. We always make a craft for Mommy too! I also had them dip the mini oreo cookies in mint coating and they taste just like the Girl Scout thin mint cookies! It rained this morning and I haven't checked the garden yet. I will after the GS go home this afternoon. Julian said there wasn't anything to pick today so I'll see.
Come meet me in my garden later. I have a table and chairs in the one corner. I'll have some zucchinni breads and Iced coffee and iced tea to share. We'll chill out and get aquainted. Bring your bathing suit and relax in my vintage tubs in my flower garden if you like. I'll have music playing and we'll just enjoy each others company.

Ew, that sounds great, Darlene. I'll be there after dinner. Hubby's on vacation this week so I have to cook. But save me a tub! With nice cool water. Man, that sounds good after a hot day outside. I'm making some sun tea. I could bring some.
I just sold 2 of my goats. I've had them over 3 years. So now I am down to just 2. I have never had just 2 goats. Wow. Sandy the Nubian is going crazy looking for them. I had thought about getting another Nubian but I'll see. I'll enjoy having the 2 right now. Then maybe later when the money's better I'll start looking around. I wanted to get a few pigs too.
I picked a few squash and a few tomatoes and okra. I forgot I had planted some of those really good mini bell peppers. They are bearing right now. And they are good. SO I got some of those too. I made a meatloaf the other day and I have pinto beans in the crock pot cooking all day. I'll fry some okra and make corn bread and that's dinner.

| Darlene, how fun for your grandkids and how wonderful your garden sounds. My husband and I sat and enjoyed the sound of the birds around our garden tonight. We've had four ripe tomatoes, the zuchinni are growing and the bon bon squash has set out its runners. Everything seems behind this year, but maybe that's just me. Suzanne |

And, Kris, we are hoping for a late fall so that our summer garden has a chance to mature, especially the tomatoes.
I may try some carrots for a small "fall garden." Suzanne |

Hi girls, I love the garden talk! Cooking with grandkids is the best - when my grands were little we would bake cookies, pizza, candy or whatever struck our fancy. What memories I have and photo's too. They are now 24 on down to 15, but they all still love to come to Grammy's and cook. They also like to cook on their own. The two oldest are men now and love to cook! Their mom's didn't like them in the kitchen while they were cooking, but boy when they came to Grammy's we had a ball! My daughter's like them in the kitchen now that they are grown and can all cook good! (LOL) Thanks for sharing and bringing back such good memories Darlene. Kris you are making good memories with your GDs! Hope you all are taking some pictures of the fun you are having! Your day in Chattanooga sounded like fun, though Hot! I'd like to take a day trip over there, but will wait for cooler weather. Hugs, Ruth

Ruth, when my son was 17 and left for college he knew how to cook, clean and wash his own clothes. He is 36 and is a fabulous cook. He is so organized he puts me to shame. Believe me, his wife does appreciate all his talents taught at home. That is one of the most valuable lessons we can teach our children and grands. They need to be self sufficient when they are on their own. If we can have fun along the way teaching them, all the better. Memories will be with them long after we are gone.
If there is one thing I would say to all you younger mothers it would be to take time to make those memories. When my children were home it was the best time of my life. Enjoy them while you can.

Not much gardening got done on Monday -- it was a day of memories with the grandkids. We took them to a local carousel, where they were delighted with the Montana themed animals: they rode a cutthroat fish, an otter, a jackrabbit, and many wild ponies. The kids are three and almost two. Grammie got to stand beside them and enjoy their delighted smiles.
Oh, we did eat our first zuchinni tonight. Yum. Suzanne |

Hello Gardeners, It has been a very busy summer with not much time for getting on the computer. My gardens are flourishing! Lots of eating cucumbers, green peppers and chard. I have had 3 ripe tomatoes and they each had end rot. However, I am closely watching a 4th tomato that is ripening and it looks okay so far. I have 12 Roma tomato plants in the home garden and 6 at my garden at my mother's house and all of them are loaded with tomatoes. I may not need to buy any at the market to can sauce with. The onions look great too. I accidentally planted cayenne peppers instead of jalapenos. I hope the two peppers are interchangeable for home made salsa.
The 3 volunteer winter squash plants that came up are still a mystery. Last year I planted acorn, spaghetti and butter nut squashes. The ones that volunteered this spring look like yellow pumpkins, so I don't know what they are! Maybe a cross between the acorn and spaghetti squashes?
I enjoy gardening and cooking with my GD. She is almost 3. She has her own little pink spade and garden rake and loves to "play in the dirt" with Grandma. She cooks a lot with her momma too. I'm making her an apron for Christmas. The other grandkids are still infants but they will be in the dirt and the kitchen too. Oh the memories!
Happy Harvesting!

Not much going on here. It's hot as you know what. Kansas was outside playing awhile ago and came in to show me the sweat dripping in her eye. She said she didn't think kids could sweat like that. That's too funny. She's had sweat drip down her back while we picked blueberries too. I had to water my blueberry bushes and grape vines and blackberry bushes and fig tree. And I also water my new azaleas I planted this year. I've already lost one.
Lida, that's fun when you get a volunteer squash plant. ya never know for a long time what it will be. I hope it's something good. Sounds like you have a budding gardener and cook too.
Suzanne, that sounds like a neat carousel. We have one here that was made by local people. All hand carved in St. Elmo, Tn. for Coolidge Park. I have a friend that made one.
Ruth, do you think it will ever cool down? I sure hope so. It might not be til November though.

Just took a shower and ate after being in the garden all day. Tomatoes are loaded and slowly ripening. I have end rot on my romas also but not on my 3 other types. Peppers, yellow squash, spaghetti squash, zuchinni, eggplant and cukes performing wonderfully. Wax beans, green beans and snap peas progressing weell. It is so good to eat a salad from the garden and griilled zuchinni. Yum.
Lida, I read that you should mix 1 milk to 6 water and spray the squash every 2 weeks for blyte. I have it also but I have been hacking off the offending leaves and I put more soil around the roots and its been working so far. I also have 4 orphan squash ? growing and am waiting to see what they are. They will most likely be spaghetti squash. My husband likes these the least so I'll send them to your hubby. LOL! Email me your address and I will send you my picture.
Anyone else that would like to exchange pics, email me your address. I have received so many pics of my beautiful farmgirl sisters. It's great to put a face to a name.
I hope I can walk tomorrow after all the gardening. LOL! I still have to do the veggies I brought in!
Raise our kids and GKS in the way they should go and they will not depart from it. Future gardeners and cooks! Hip hip hooray!

Kris, It's brutal outside today and tomorrow is supposed to be the hottest day of the Summer! We need rain so bad. My poor little birds, they keep thanking me for filling the birdbaths up with fresh water. Our pond pump is not working at the moment, so the waterfall is out of commissiion (the birds usually get in that too)! The birds favorite birdbath is a cheap large plastic saucer that goes under a flower pot. It just sits on the ground in my front flower garden. They line up and fight over that one! I have two more standard birdbaths in the front flower bed, they use them but not like the saucer! Too funny! I also have a saucer on the table out on the deck that they use. Hummers are very busy too. Garden is very sick - tomatoes are still coming in though! HOT and DRY - I'm ready for Fall! The acorns are falling off the trees and are tiny, I guess from the hot, dry weather! the Squirrels won't be happy about that! Hugs, Ruth

My garden is doing pretty well. We have so much lettuce it would probably go around the world and back. LOL! Our raspberries are done for the season. The only thing that isn't doing well is our peppers. We have never had good luck with them. This is the first year that I have gone deep into gardening and I LOVE it! It is so rewarding! I feel like I have a new passion in life. I go out every morning and check everything out, talk to them. We had a late start this spring due to the weather so I'm hoping we will have an Indian summer and have veggies into the fall.

Wow, everyone sounds so busy in their nice gardens. I am so jealous right now. I am still getting okra. And our peppers are doing great. I guess they like hot dry weather. I planted 4 really hot pepper plants and they are full of little tiny yellow peppers. I picked some a few days ago and let hubby try them. He could only take one little bite. He was on fire! So they are hot little buggars. I am going to pick all I can and pour hot vinegar over them. He will like them in winter. And I also have the little mini bell sweet peppers. They are so good. I can eat them all day.
Darlene, I hope you aren't too awful sore tomorrow. But it's a good sore.
I just had to refill my bird bath. I think the water is evaporating in this heat. And I have to keep filling up all the animal water troughs too. They are drinking it like crazy.
Pam, I am so glad you are having a good gardening year so far. It's always fun to see all your hard work growing.

| Watered the garden tonight -- we have had a drying wind. I am hoping to see the northern lights tonight. We are supposed to have beautiful ones. One year I saw red northern lights - beautiful; another time while in Canada I saw green ones. Perhaps tonight with the sun doing its thing -- a sun storm of some kind -- and few clouds, I will see them. Of course, the real trick is to stay up for them. Suzanne |
