Suzanne, Something I have always wanted to do is to see the Northern Lights - the thought of them amazes me. Is it something you can take pictures of?
Hope you made it up late enough to see them, I know you enjoyed the show!
Everyone enjoy your gardens! I'm with Kris, mine is about done as it has been so hot and dry here.
I need to go out and see what we have left - it is thundering, so maybe, just maybe it is going to rain! Rain Dance please.
Hugs, Ruth

Ruth, I'll have to call Kansas and get her to do a rain dance for us! She's good at it. I hope ya get some there. It's clouding up here. It's too hot to go out there and look right now. I'll go later. I just heard thunder!

And those lights sure sound beautiful, Suzanne. I hope you got to see them too.

Hi all, I got up several times during the night, but I never saw the northern lights. People do take pictures of them, but I never have had my camera when they appear.

We are weathering a terrific wind storm right now. My squash leaves are turned inside out and things blew around the yard -- our gas grill with tanks blew over. I was amazed. At one point winds were 53 mph -- not tornado strength by any means, but strong nonetheless. I hope my sunflowers survive -- they seem pretty tough. Suzanne

I am sorry for you ladies experiencing drought conditions. We have had hot & dry, cool & wet, and great summers like thhis one has been. I need to water the garden this morning before I go to work. I hope to find some soaker hoses on end of the year clearance sales for next year's garden. We have to pay for our water so I want to use it as efficiently as possible. Sometimes I hold off on watering if it looks like rain, to the detriment of the plants.

Darlene- I need your e-mail address to send you a pic. Your address isn't in your profile.

Oh- I picked the 4th tomato to ripen this season and no end rot! Halleluiah!

Have a blessed day!

Kansas must have done that rain dance! Tell her "thank you" because we got a really good rain last night. A very hard rain, sort of beat up some stuff, but it was rain none the less.
DH picked lots of grape tomatoes, cherry tomatoes and a couple of reg tomatoes and some zuchs and some peppers. So our garden is not all done. Still have pretty tomatoes on the vine.
I can't imagine just having a "wind" storm. Here when we have Major wind, rain normally comes with it.
I'm sorry you didn't get to see the Northern Lights - you sure did try though!
Happg gardening, hope everyone has a blessed day!
Hugs, Ruth

Lida...I tried to email you but it's not in your profile. Email me, it's in my profile now. I had to say yes in my profile to be able to get emails. I assume you need to do the same.
My husband talked to a friend that has been a lifelong farmer and he said his wifes tomatoes have end rot too. He said to sray with calcium chloride when they flower. Sounds like a shot of milk water should work. Must be the lactic acid!

Garden still going strong. Already planning more for next year. LOL!

Some of our zuchinnis are rotting on the end. I've never had that happen. WE had a huge windstorm that blew off many small tomatoes. Gardening is not for the weak of heart, but it does reward in so many ways (like fresh multi-colored carrots, Rainbow Swiss Chard, and onions that taste just right.). Suzanne

I'm glad you got some rain, Ruth. We did yesterday. I was in Ft. O and it was right behind me. I had to turn around and head right back into it. It was a monsoon! And we got some here at home also. I am going to go out later and see if I can dig out some beets and onions and potatoes since the ground will be easier to work with. I just need to find the beets now in the weed jungle.

I have been watering my fruit bushes and flowers with milk lately. My fig that I got when it was just a few inches tall is now over 3 feet tall. I think that helps.

My hubby has a shirt that says "Farming. It's not for the frail." So true!

My pickling cucumbers are now bursting everywhere! We had such a late spring/summer that my tomatoes are taking their time. I just picked 6 heads of lettuce and 6 more need to be picked. My celery is growing so slow-any tips on celery? I still have strawberries but the raspberries are gone for the season. I was reading somewhere about someone doing fall gardening. Do any of you do that?

Pam...your garden sounds like it is kicking in finally too. I just went out and picked enough zucchini, and
spaghetti squash to share with two of my neighbors and still have plenty for us. I love having home grown
produce. Yummy!

Do you plan to pickle some cucumbers? I have an excellent Bread and Butter Pickle Recipe if you would like it.
If not...that's fine too...I don't get my feelings hurt too easily. LOL

Love & Hugs,
Peggy

It's hard to imagine fresh lettuce here in Aug. But that sounds so good. I need to get ready for the fall garden.

I picked enough hot peppers to make 2 pints of just hot pepper vinegar where I pour hot vinegar over them and seal. My hubby likes hot vinegar on greens. It's so easy to do. Except I always forget that I just cut up lots of hot peppers and that it stays on the fingers forever. Ouch!

Also found some tomatoes out there in the jungle! ANd some red peppers and some mini bells. And still getting lots of okra.

It sure sounds like the gardens are still going strong out there. I have no idea about growing celery though. I did see a few articles about when you cut off the bottom of a stalk of celery you just plant it and it grows more celery. Sounds simple enough for me to do.

Kristin Fresh okra sounds soooo good My garden is just staring to look good too I don't really know If any tomatoes will ripen on the vine I have beautiful cabbage the cucs are doing well about 6/8 a day and the pickling cucs about 20/28 per week enough for 3 quarts.
I have swiss chard I have never grown it what do I do with it???? the beans have flowers but no beans and the onions and garlic are a mess. Beets are in and soooooo good it will pickle them in the nest day or so.Potatoes are staring to die down and the carrots are poking the shoulders up.

Not bad But I did not get 1 corn plant to grow and it was 1/3 of my garden.

Hey Diana. Watch those beans! There will be some real soon after you see the flowers. And look underneath the leaves. They always fool me. And I am so jealous of your cabbage. I planted a whole flat of seeds and they all came up. I planted them in the garden and they just sat there. I think there may be a few heads now. But the past 2 years I have no luck with them. And I want to make kinchi and sauer kraut. Swiss chard is good sauteed with some olive oil and maybe some shallots and garlic. Your garden sounds like it's doing great for you. I hope you get lots of good stuff put up. I didn't get but 2 ears of corn from all mine that I planted. The cows got in the big garden where I had Hickory King and Silver Queen corn. So nothing there. Then in the other garden I had planted an heirloom sweet corn and I got 2 ears. I will use them next year for seeds. Very discouraging. I will go to the market and get a few bushels to freeze. I am totally out right now and that ain't good.

I cook swiss chard as I do spinach -- steamed. I also heat up olive oil and garlic in a large frying pan that has a cover and put the just washed leaves into the fry pan -- the little bit of water on their leaves helps cook them -- the olive oil and garlic gives a great flavor.

If steamed, butter and salt and pepper make the swiss chard yummy. Suzanne

I grew Swiss Chard last year and never even ate any. Now I want some. Not much going on out there these days. It was 102 today. Too stinkin' hot! I am so ready for fall.

Sherry...I haven't gotten any maters yet either! I'm praying we have a nice long Indian Summer so we
can enjoy a harvest of Tomatoes. I have never tried eating Fried Green Tomatoes but I hear they are
excellent! I maybe trying them this year! LOL

Suzanne...I know a lot of people love cooked greens but I am not one of them. Even though my Grandmother
was from the South and she loved all cooked greens, and my mother loves them...I didn't inherit that same
passion for them. I like my spinach raw and in salads and any other mixed greens. I know, I'm not normal! :+)

Kristin...wow, I love hot weather but that is way too HOT. We get some hot 90 degree weather this weekend. We have only had four days this summer in the 90's. Most people love it cooler here but I love summer and don't feel like we have even had summer yet. Last year by now we had had 21 over 90 degree days.

The Garden is doing good right now...except for those tomatoes.

Lovely Days And Garden Joys,

Hi Peggy, I know I'd love to send you some hot weather, sure Kris would agree. I don't do hot - and it has been hot here this Summer.
I am so thankful for central ac - what a blessing that is.
I'm past ready for Fall, my favorite time of the year. Love the changing leaves, fall produce, Fall colors - Just Love Fall!
Hope everyone is well and surviving the heat here in the South and East.
Enjoy your gardens in the West - our's are about done here.
Hugs, Ruth

It is so hot here and I don't have AC. I don't do hot well so I live in my bathing suit all summer! I jump in and out of my outside tubs as needed. My dog does too! I don't do AC well...I always have sinus problems. Even in the car. Fall is my favorite time of year too, although I love winter! You can always bundle up but how much further than a bathing suit can I go? A birthday suit? LOL

My garden is producing like crazy. My tomatoes are starting to ripen more every day. Canning jars are ready. Actually I better do some green tomatoes before I can't!

Fried Green Tomatoes! One of my favorites! My pickling cucumbers are going crazy. All of our lettuce is gone and our carrots are going strong. I can't wait till next year when I can have some more raised beds. I want corn and pumpkins. Does anyone have summer squash? I love making squash patties with them.

Pam...here you are, hanging out in the Garden with the other Garden Girls. Looked for you on the Porch
tonight! I have summer squash... how do you make squash patties? I am always looking for a new recipe for squash.

Hey if our weather heats up this weekend like it is suppose to...we might have to get on our bikes and ride to Darlene's and take her up on her invite to use her out door tubs. Darlene do you have a pink one? Pam likes pink!

Darlene and Ruth...I love Fall too. I love something about every season. Summer is my favorite and then Fall is
my next favorite. We have really pretty Falls here.

Well, I cooked up summer squash and zukes from the garden for dinner tonight. They tasted so good! Have any of you ever grown Yellow Zucchini? I tried it for the first time this year. They are bright bright yellow, with very shiny skins and the meat inside is much denser than regular zucchini. Very tasty indeed!

Blessings,
~peg

PeggyAnn, it sounds like you have the perfect weather there. I hope you get some tomatoes soon. Ruth is so right. I'd love to send this heat your way. Those tomatoes like the heat.

Darlene, that sounds so neat to have outdoor tubs. You'll have to poat a picture if you can. I'd love to see them. We used to have an outdoor shower. I miss that. We need to make another one here. And I have got to have AC. I would just wilt. My sis in Colorado doesn't have AC. They don't have humidity there so really don't need one.

I made some fried green tomatoes a few weeks ago. They are so good. And I just grate squash, either yellow or zucchini, and add an egg, salt and pepper and grated onion. Fry them in a little oil. They are so good. And very east to make.

Ya'll have a great day.

Kris

I make squash patties much like Kris does only I add a little crumbled fetta cheese. Serve with a dollop of sour cream for a little added flavor and calories.

Please may I send you some of our heat. Was 103 yesterday, supposed to be hotter today and hotter again tomorrow, then maybe some rain. After the rain/cold front moves in, it is supposed to be ONLY in the 90's
