Ladies...I would love you all to ride, run, drive or whatever to come to my tubs. We'd have a blast! I'm working on another tub or 2. When I find out how to post pics I would love to show you my tubs! Red is my favorite color but Peggy you always get it. I'll paint Pam's Pink when I get it.

I didn't know there was yellow zuchinni. Sounds yummy.

It's raining here and cool. Thank you Jesus! He knew I needed it to do my corn. Did 100 ears of corn so far and hubby just went to get 50 more. Bringing a basket of little cukes for pickling. I am chillin till he gets back to start the rest. I look like a site for sore eyes...corn bits in my hair,glasses...you get the picture! Can't take a shower until the rest is finished. When you cut it off the cob it does its own thing. LOL! I won't be able to move tomorrow.

I'm planning an outdoor event for just a few people in October. We will have a campfire, roast marshmallows. I'll be making fall appropriate foods...Apple dumplings, pumpkin pie, might do chili bread bowls and I'm not sure what else. It won't start until % pm. I'll keep you posted.

Hubby just came back and informed me His 2GKS are coming for the weekend @ 10am tomorrow when I have all the pickles to do. They are 15 and 18 and he thinks it's no big deal. They can help me he said. They never canned or saw anyone can in their life! I'm so meticulous when I cook and can I hardly let the hubby do anything. I'm furious and he just screams like a maniac and thinks I'm nuts! There's a big background behind all this that I won't go into now. He is not cosiderate at all. I don't know why that is such a shock...he never was. I raised his 2 boys from 2 and 4. He did nothing to help me and the mother was no better. I'm the nitwit though. I really was for puttng up with it! When I asked what he had planned to do with them he said nothing. So I get to can, worry about cookng and entertainig. Fed up that he Doesn't think of me. I'm running away!

Blessings,

Yup, this thread is appropriately named- Garden Adventures. Garden Adventures, Heart Adventures, Family Adventures... It is so comforting to know that none of us is alone on our adventure. I watched the first movie in the Lord of the Rings trilogy last evening with my DD. What made the biggest impression on me is that Frodo could not have been successful in his adventure without his faithful friend Sam.

Darlene- I will ride my bike down to PA and fall into one of your tubs. Hopefully the dog will share with me. I hope the visit from your husband's 2 grands goes better than you anticipate. Men can be thoughtless at times. Prayers for you. How big is a stack of 100 ears of corn? I can't imagine!

Kristen & Belle- I think I am going to make the summer squash patties for dinner tonoght. DH does not like it if I cook or bake in this heat because the house gets so hot. However, the family does not like cold sandwiches for dinner every night either.

Kris- I have never had fried green tomoatoes, but this year I have an abundance of tomatoes so I may try them.

The garden is doing well. The tomatoes are starting to ripen and the cukes are growing like weeds! I am going to have enough green peppers to freeeze this year. I hope I have time later this month to can salsa and tomato sauce with all fresh ingredients from my garden. I have vacation at the end of the month and I hope the bulk of the tomatoes ripen during my vacation time.

How do you make a healthy morning glory vine bloom?

Gotta go.

Belle, feta and sour cream make anything taste better! I need to make some more. I am getting a little extra milk now. I want to make some more chevre too.

Pam and Peggy, ya'll live close to each other? How fun.

I did grow an heirloom golden zucchini this year. It is pretty. It's really wierd though to go pick zucchini and there is this bright yellow one on the plant. I have to remember what it is.

Darlene, I am so sorry you're having hubby troubles. I'd make him help you too. But the kids are old enough to learn how to can. At least get them to cut the cucumbers for you. This could be a good bonding time for you and the kids. And for him too. And I want my tub to be green!

Lida, I don't like to cook when it's so hot either. It really makes the AC work harder. I need to freeze some of my red bells. They are doing pretty good. I love those.

I sure feel like a garden slacker these days. I did go out this morning and watered the fruit bushes and flowers. While I was out there I picked a shirt ful of tomatoes I didn't know I had. I was glad to see them.

We are just coming out of a very rainy week -- remember we are really in a semi-arid desert here in the Rockies. My vegetables want sunshine. Nonetheless, I picked carrots, zuchinni (round ones), and onions for a Thai curry tonight and added basil at the last minute.

We are seeing bottom rot on some of the tomatoes. Not a pretty sight. Be well my friends, enjoy the soaks in the tubs, Suzanne

Suzanne...my youngest son took me out for Lunch at a Thai Restaurant this afternoon. We love that kind of food too. How did you get round zucchini????
Kris...yes, Pam and I live just across the River from each other but in different States. We haven't officially met yet, but we plan to. Can't wait! Some time soon I hope. I feel like I know her already! :+)

Lida...I love Morning Glories. They are usually so prolific...that they just bloom and spread everywhere. Do you have a lack of bees in your area maybe? I don't know how to get them to bloom but you might try using a q-tip on each blossom and try to pollinate them like you do tomato plants sometimes.

Kris, Belle and Pam...still haven't tried The Squash Patties but tomorrow just might be the day. They sound so good.

Well, we finally got that hot weather I have been whining for. NOW IT FEELS LIKE SUMMER HERE! But because it is
close to 100 degrees I have had to heavily water the Garden each day. Even at that by mid afternoon the leaves on my squash are just wilting in the heat. I think my tomatoes are loving it though because all of a sudden they are growing like crazy. They are still small, however I now have hope that I will be enjoying some maybe by the end of the month or early Sept.

Happy gardening girls...Life Is An Adventure and Gardens give us an excuse to play in the Dirt!

Blessings,
~peggy

Peggy, the round zuchinis are an heirloom variety. I can't remember which seed company. They taste great and have a pretty light green variegated skin.

Thai is one of our favorites too.

Garden is today enjoying great sunshine. I'm crawling around the laundry room floor laying tile. It's fun, but I'll be glad when it 's done as my knees are complaining as are my feet (they don't like the squished feeling of kneeling).

I got some fish emulsion at Lowe's yesterday. I plan to feed my plants this week. Our tomatoes should love the 80 degree weather predicted for this week. And the sun. Suzanne

Well the 18 yo didn't come and the 15 yo came and he is a really nice kid. We always get along. I guess the real freak out is because of my husbands lack of concern about my feelings. All I did was ask why they were coming at 10 am and he started to call me everything under the sun. It's never a problem to the person who lets you do everything! I decided to make the best of it and everything worked out. The GS even hooked up my printer and fixed my computer. So as you see it really had little to do with the kids.

I went to church this morning and I know that God loves me and all is well with the world.

Suzanne Thanks for asking...it's good to be able to rant and rave and have a sounding board where all the sisters listen, advise and give their shoulder to lean on.

Blessings,

Darlene..glad it worked out better than YOU expected girlfriend! I can never figure out
why men can't cope with dealing with their own children. It's like hey, these are your
biological children...can't you do somethings with them???? Why does it always fall on the
shoulders of the Step-Mom? You aren't alone in that arena Sister! If it wasn't for me, I
don't think in 25 yrs...we would have any true relationship with his kids or grandchildren
if it wasn't for me. Which I don't mind...I love them all very much. It is just strange is
all I can say about it. It is almost like the Men don't know what to do with the kids but
they get mad if you can't handle it or figure it out or don't want to do it once in awhile.
CRAZY HUH?

My Garden is making me Happy Happy Happy! It is finally really going great guns!

Pam...sorry you are sick today girlfriend! I will be praying for you. Hope you didn't get
my Virtual Sickness from last week. LOL Love ya!

hugs,

Peggy...Thanks for saying that, it really makes me know I'm not alone. It is only ok to do things if it doesn't effect his activities. To bad if I'm busy, tired or just not in the mood then it's like I'm the devil incarnate! Do women really ever get a break? Not many do.

Pam...you and your doggie feel better sister.

Kris...thanks for thinking about me! It makes it all better when I can be thinking,"I know my sisters are looking out for me."

I canned 5 pints of salsa today. I used any tomatoes I had and I used yellow ones too that made it look so pretty. I have peach butter in the crockpot all day almost ready to jar. I think I'll do 1/2 spiced and 1/2 plain.

Made green tomatoes kosher and polish dill on Friday and just had to taste them. Yummy! Will do many more for winter!

Hi Darlene, I too was thinking about you this past weekend! I can't imagine what you go through. I am thankful I have a thoughtfull husband. He has two sons and I have two daughters' but we both think of all of them as "ours"! We have been married almost 15 years. Our oldest daughter is 45 and oldest grand is 24. I have much to be thankful for, and I am!
I sure would like your peach butter recipe for the crockpot. I Love peach butter and the peaches are still coming in here in Georgia.
Big hugs to you Darlene - please don't allow him be ugly to you. You are a valuable person and deserve to be treated with respect.

Ruth...Thank you for thinking of me. I know alot of people wonder why I stayed. I had no where to go. My mother said I made my bed now I had to lay in it. With my 2 little ones I was afraid he would try to get custody and I wouldn't do that to them. Remember back in the day you never talked about it either. He got worse after the kids left because no one was there to hear him. I know he would never leave me alone. I'm old now and I just can't up and go. I would have to pay rent and I don't want to have new worries. I pay 1/2 of everything and before I lost my job in December I paid more. I can truly say I've had a husband who has not supported me. It saddens me to think that I mean so little to the one person that should care for you the most. You wouldn't believe some of the things I could tell you. I wish I could have thought of the kids as mine but he allowed them to be so disrespectful to me even to this day. Thanks again and lucky you to have a nice husband !

Crockpot Peach Butter

18 peaches...scald in hot water, peel and core. Cut up fine and place in crock.
4 cups sugar...add to crock.
1/2 cup water...add to crock.
Cook on high with lid on for 4 hours or until soft. At this point they say to puree. I don't because I like some peach pieces in the butter. I use my hand mixer and mix right in the crock until it is as smooth as I want it. Now I take the lid off and cook on high until it cooks down and is thick, jelly jam consistancy, about 2 hours. Ladle into jars and screw lids on. I don't do anything else. If you want it spicey add cinnamon and nutmeg to taste. I get 7 8oz jelly jars.

Ruth I see you are in the autumn quilt block swap too. It's my first block swap also. I'm going to post and see if the sisters will send a picture of themselves with their blocks. Wouldn't that be nice?

Hugs and Blessings,
Darlene

Darlene, Thanks so much for the recipe. I'm going to make it this week - think I'll add some spice to mine. Also have a friend with pear trees, so might just give that one a try too. She makes spiced pears, uses those little red hot candies. Don't have her recipe yet, but will tomorrow.
You know you alway have us farmgirls here for support. We love you and are here for you.

Ruth...It's such a blessing that I have found all of you. It gives me courage and strength to stand up for myself. Something I should have done years ago. Post the pear recipe with the red hots when you get it. It sounds good! When you do the butters let it cook down until it is a sthick as you want it. It thickens some when it cools.

Garden going stong. Will be canning something daily. Did peaches, pizza sauce and some spaghetti sauce tonight. Used a mix for the 2 sauces and I'm sorry I tried them...to spicey! Oh well I won't waste them.

Going to a a farmer's market/flea market tomorrow. Many mennonites have beautiful produce stands so I will see what I can get that I don't have.

Darlene, you are a very busy lady. You are doing so much and your garden sounds like it really did well for you this year. I have hardly done a thing here. I am having a lazy year. You have been on my heart for days now. I had written out a long post for you then deleted it. I just don't know how you can take all you do and stay there. My mother works in a women's shelter and sees things like this all the time. It's really hard for all of them to leave their abusers but they do. Some do fall right back in again but others make a good life for themselves and their children. My sister is one who had to leave her husband. She's doing great now. It's amazing your attitude and your strength. I guess I will never understand what you go through each day. But just know that we are ALL here for you and we would do all we could to help you through this. You are in my thoughts and prayers daily, Darlene. I am so glad you can come here for support. I wish I could go to that market with you. We have one near here that I want to go to with Ruth soon. It sounds wonderful. The last Sat. of the month they sell animals. I need more chickens. SO I would like to go then. Have a great day and don't get too tired out. I just hope your hubby appreciates all you do for him.

I love pears and want to get a bunch to make the spiced pears. All I do is cut them up and make a syrup with water and honey and put cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and something else I can't recall at the moment. Then process them. They are so good and make smoothies so good. I can't wait to get some. I have 3 trees but they all had fire blight so I had to cut them back. Hopefully next year I will get some.

Ya'll have a great day.

Kris

Been awhile since I poked my nose in here. Peg, I hope you're feeling better today! Darlene, I haven't gone back to read your story yet, but I'm adding my cyber hugs to the others.

My little garden is doing well, and my tomato plants have a bunch on them, but now I'm hoping they redden up before frost (it is all of 49F this morning)! The farmers at the market are finally lowering their prices to $5 a pound.

Hey there, Melissa! I have missed seeing you around. I am so glad your garden is still going. I do hope those maters ripen soon. So that's pretty pricey for tomatoes. What's all the other produce going for there? That's amazing how high that is. At out Chattanooga market they sell for about $2.50-$3.00 a pound. Can't go there! But people will buy them.

I sure could use some of your temps here. Although today is really nice out. It's overcast and just did rain a bit. I had to shoo turkeys back inside. They just stand out in it. What would they do without thier "momma"?

I was just out in my jungle and got a few red peppers, 3 nice pretty yummy mini bell peppers, some okra and a few potatoes! I know what's for dinner tonight! I am hungry already.

I would love to hear some of the things ya'll have come up with for meals from all the bounty in these wonderful gardens. Come on ya'll. Share now. I love to hear all the things people can come up with right out of the gardens.

PeggyAnn, I hope this weather passes and you feel better soon. That cannot be much fun at all for you.

We are getting a few tomatoes but not many-I'm sure it's due to the weather being so wonky this summer. Our cucumbers have a little bit of powdery mold on them. I sprayed them with milk and it looks like it's clearing up. Our celery is taking it's own sweet time-same with the carrots. We are still getting a few strawberries. Our pineapple is growing slow but still going strong. We will have to bring it in for the winter. Our coleuses have taken over and our clematis is finally blooming.

Darlene, I'm glad you were able to have a good time with the 15 yo. It's amazing to me how much men expect women to be able to do. I've been there and it's no fun. But deciding to make the best of it can sometimes produce wonderful things.

Ladies, it's so nice to join you tonight. I have had a very, very long week (11 1/2 hours of work yesterday). I work in student services and have been dealing with people constantly all week. So tomorrow, I plan to put up beets and carrots -- I freeze them, and dry mint and basil, and clean the house up a bit. And maybe get in a little sewing -- all will help rejuvenate me I think. Melissa...wow, I will never complain about our tomato prices again! That is awful!
I am going to have a ton of tomatoes if they ever grow bigger and ripen. They'll
probably all come on in the middle of Sept. when I am at the Oregon Coast
for my ladies retreat.

Kris...one of my favorite recipes I got from Pam and a couple other Farmgirls adding suggestions
and that was the Zucchini Patties. Those were a hit at my house. I told my son about them
and then he wanted the recipe. Also, I grew spaghetti squash this summer. I had pretty
recently lost 50 lbs and am trying to keep it off...so, I cook the spaghetti squash in the
Microwave...on high for 6 minutes. Then take it out and cool it a tad, slice it in half and
with a fork scoop all those spaghetti strands out and use it instead of Pasta with my home-
made spaghetti sauce. Or I use green beans from the garden and use in place of pasta. Yummy!
And you can use your tomatoes, finely chopped zucchini, and onions in the home-made sauce.
Just one thing I do.

Pam...What color clematis did you grow? I have the worst luck with that plant. I kill them with too
much love. I have a pretty good green thumb but I don't do well with that one. I love the
deep purply blue color. Guess where I was today? Hint: our favorite Antique Mall. I so would
have called you but my hubby was along for the trip today. But another time for sure!!! I found
the cutest Burgundy Fedora there today and I bought it just because it look cute on me. Then I
got some more of the wonderful goats milk soap there. That stuff smells good enough to eat, I
swear. I was telling another friend of mine who is a Home-made Soap Freak...about it and so she
had me pick her up some too. Then I got some lace and buttons for Mail-Art and such. And had
lunch there. Isn't their cafe just the best?

Suzanne...what a long day girlfriend! Wow...that is a killer! You need to go over to Darlene's and soak
in one of her outdoor tubs and just relax! ~ You know, I use to dry my herbs in the sun but now
I use the Microwave. So much faster and they retain their natural color that way. Looks more
appealing when you bottle them up. Is that how you dry them?

Darlene...even though you haven't been on here for a couple days here is a shout-out to you and a hug!

Sweet Garden Dreams Girls,
