I believe the hext readings are about Anna. Luke 2:36-38. "There was also a prophetess named Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, and then was a widow until she was 84. She never left the temple but worshipped night and day, fasting and praying. Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem."

References say Anna may have been able to live at the temple, since she was a widow, and the temples were very large and had many rooms. She obviously could see that Jesus was very very special. What do you all think?

As a prophetess I would imagine that God highlighted him to Anna. And I understand that people could live in the temple. How wonderful to be blessed to see Jesus. I can only imagine how that felt for Anna

Anna is depicted as a dignified character in the bible. Paul instructed women to adorn themselves with good works (1 Tim. 2:9-10) In other words, wear godliness, which results in dignity. Anna's name means grace. Anna's dignity grew from her relationship with God. Though dignity begins within, it quickly overflows into actions, attitudes, and speech. That is the lesson we are looking for in these verses, do you think?

I read that for many years Anna prophesied the coming of the Messiah. You are so right, Cherime. Imagine what it must have been like to see Jesus as an infant.

I think another message of these verses may be that no matter what situation we find our selves in, there is a purpose that we are to carry out and when we faithfully do as He directs then we will eventually see the reward. God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. Anna's reward was great and I would think that there were some who felt that God had abandoned her to widowhood.

Two short verses to share what must have been a tremendous event. It seems that Joseph and Mary were amazed at Simeon's words, and then with the words of another "witness"...an elderly lady...they were confirmed. I looked up the name Anna, Ann, Anita (my middle name) and it does mean grace..or favor. It's Hebrew origins mean to bend receiving favor and giving favor. She was exactly as her name said...receive and give. As a prophetess, her mouth had been touched by the Holy Spirit. It says that she told anyone/everyone who came to the Temple to seek redemption in/for Jerusalem. *(in is used in the KJV and the New King James) *for (used in the NASB & NIV). There is a vast difference to me. People looked to Jerusalem & the Temple as the place where they could get closest to God. So if people were seeking redemption IN Jerusalem, Anna pointed that the way was in a person, a baby named Jesus, not in a City, Church, a Temple...Synogogue. Now...if it is to be translated redemption FOR Jerusalem, that would open the door for removal of Rome & its customs from the Israelites. Both are good, but for me, I would be showing up wanting personal redemption...and Anna pointed the way.

I like that God used a man AND a woman to confirm His plan to Mary and Joseph. Jesus was for ALL people. Also, they are both advanced in age and have a lot of life experience. Culturally, I think that is something we are losing - respect for our older generation and the things they have seen and experienced. Unfortunately, even in my own church family, the young adults (20-30 year olds) tend to treat anyone older than them (particularly those who may not have all the technology down) as complete morons. I may not "tweet", have an ipad, or drink Starbucks coffee but I think I know how to treat others and I have a fair amount of practical life experience. Sorry, didn't mean to get off on a rant....
I think Anna (and Simeon) is a great example of wisdom and gracefully aging in service to God.

They also gave Mary something to ponder in her heart. Something to give her strength when things did not look good, when her day was lousy. There was a purpose to it all. God had confirmed it through two other sources that she should not doubt herself or the purpose that God was activating.

Thanks Cherime!

You are right that they gave Mary words to ponder in her heart and keep her on the path as she watched the One from God grow. You reminded me that it is like a road sign that says "Staley" Rd (any name road) and as you travel down, and things look infamiliar, you remember what the sign said and you plug away until you get to where you were going. (Good example for me this morning, as we were on Staley and nothing looked right as we took some back roads on our way home.)

And there are so many distractions on the road side vying for our attention, trying to disrupt the destiny and purpose for which we were created. The pastor recently did a 6 week study on Nehemiah and the necessity for focus. Also have been watching Andrew Womack in the am before leaving for work. He is talking about being effortlessly transformed and how that comes about automatically as we meditate on and immerse ourselves in the Word. The Word, and in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God. Jesus the Word of God. A great place to meditate on and from.

Yes, well said, Cherime. I really agree that what we think upon and focus on is what we ourselves become. Paul says in Phillipians to think on higher things, what is worthy and true.

Mary Magdelene by the crypt. How to go from 0 to 100 in the space of one word. From utter misery over His loss to beyond all comprehension of joy when He calls her name. Then the race to spread the joyous news. I wonder when she had time to sit down and contemplate what this really meant? Then comes the moment of awe, of knowing that she knows that God is in control and all are redeemed.

Mary Magdelene's name is mentioned 14 times in the Gospels. Bible records say that she was born in Magdela, a city on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee. Not much is know about her life before she was healed by Jesus. After her healing (told of in Luke), she became a devoted follower, and is thought to have been a single businesswoman, as she had the funds to travel with with Jesus and his disciples.

Jesus chose Mary to be the first to see him after the crucifixion. He knew she grieved. To choose her to be the first is a powerful statement. He was continuing to heal her and pastor to her even in his resurrection.Perhaps he appeared to her first because she needed him most at the time. When she saw the empty tomb, she had no thought of resurrection. At first she thought Jesus was a gardener! When she realized, she called him Rabboni. It means teacher or master, but stronger. Her gratitude to him for healing her, and her faith in Him is significant for us today. We can practice to have a grateful heart and to focus on serving Jesus, even at the foot of misery and death, unafraid to witness. But we have to believe that He is risen.

Yes! Looking back on my life, I see where he was there, even when I was not praying and not reading His Word. Like a parent, He was guiding my life for my own best interests, and I was oblivious! But now I see. Just like the words from Amazing Grace.

Mary Magdalene: I've pondered over her since we started talking about her. I've read about her regarding the resurrection in all 4 gospels. Her activites are puzzling. Several of the gospels say she and another Mary ran to tell the disciples right away after seeing the angel at the tomb. Another says she went to the disciples, with another Mary, after running into Jesus on the way & stopping to adore at his feet. John, the "disciple that Jesus loved" tells a different account. Mary had been there the night before, came early, saw the stone rolled back & ran to both Peter's and John's house. They ran to the tomb & saw that Jesus was gone. Mary Magdalene was there in the background and after Peter & John (v 10)left to their homes, Jesus talked to Mary. She did not recognize Him, thinking him the gardener. After speaking with Him, she went & talked to the disciples. Now...only Matthew & John were apostles with Jesus. Luke & Mark were not there first-hand. Matthew spoke as he knew it from being with the disciples in the same house. John, however, saw the tomb, had run there with Peter, & his account is more complete, I think. ;0) Not sure why Jesus didn't show himself to John or Peter, but Mary, who had had 7 demons, stayed by the last place they saw Jesus after His death...the tomb. She did not go home, it appears she was not with the disciples etc. I think Jesus rewarded Mary because she grieved for Him, & was willing to go through thick & thin to be close by. The others didn't understand his death & resurrection...therefore were home & afraid. I think Jesus talked to Mary, because she stayed at the tomb. He is the rewarder of those who genuinely seek him.
