Hello ladies, I was wondering if you could help me out. My aunt has been called to go to Iraq next week for a year. The sad thing is that she has to leave her new baby girl behind. I want to make something for her to take with her but I don't know what she is allowed to have or to take. Also I was thinking about making a website with pictures and videos so she could see her baby girl, I assume that she will be able to access the internet often? I really know nothing about the army, if someone could give me some good ideas that would be really helpful. I have offered to help take care of her little girl, now I just need to go rummage sales for highchairs and cribs. Thanks ladies, Rose

I think they do have decent internet access, maybe once every couple of weeks or so. But it may depend on where she's sent. You could do a blog very easily.
Have fun helping with the baby!

| Hi Rose, Your so sweet to take care of your Aunt's little one while she's "gone to work" for all of us. Ask your Aunt what her access will be. Each unit is different. We have a son-in-law in Iraq and right now he has an email address and can occassionally call. She might need to get to her destination and then tell you what things are needed. I think the blog thing sounds like a good idea.(Assuming she has access) Also you might want to do the old fashioned journal in a book. With a daily entry about the childs progress or cute stories etc. This could be a keepsake for the Mom and child later. Little kids make so much progress in the beginning so she will want to know all. Good luck on your new job and tell your Aunt thanks from us here in the USA. Teddie |

Thanks ladies for your messages. Theoanne the idea of a journal is really great, I think I might try doing that. I just don't want her to miss out, I just can't imagine what it will be for her to not be able to watch her daughter grow. Definitly going to make a blog now. Thanks ladies, Rose

I agree. I think a blog and a journal would be so appreciated by your aunt & her baby later on. You are so kind to be helpful and caring. Godspeed to your aunt.

The blog and the journal are a great idea. you might suggest she do one also for her little girl to have later. if you want to send something for her, pillowcases are easy to make and a much treasured item once they are there and when it is getting a little worn then you could send a new one.

It's me again. I understand girl hygiene items especially kotex are needed. I don't think the military supplies these. Also deodorant, shampoo etc. I've also heard of some sending nail polish. The girls can't polish their fingernails, but their toe nails can be any color they want in their combat boots.
Also I like the journal MOM will write for her daughter. Great idea. Rose, there is also a site called daddydolls.com. You can send a picture and they make a doll pillow out of it. It's geared toward kids of deployed military. My step daughter used this site. She sent a picture of her husband and they printed his pic on fabric and made a doll. Her 3 kids will not go to bed @ night without their Daddydolls Maybe after the baby grows a little you could send her mom a doll of her. Just a thought

I have read that personal items are always needed -- especially lotions, conditioner, shampoo, and sanitary items.
I think that a blog and journal are a great idea. You can document her little one's progress each week for her to see.
You are a wonderful person for caring for her little girl. It makes me feel so bad when mom's have leave little one behind. I will pray for her safety in Iraq and safe return.

Internet acess will depend on where she actually winds up but chances are she will get to check it at least once a week if not more often.
Chapstick/lip balm
Feminine needs
Hand sanitizer
Baby Wipes
Laundry deterg
qtips
deo
powdered drink mix (Tang, gatorade, etc)
a swimsuit (tell her take one even if she never uses it! If nothing else she can shower in it if necessary. The first time hubby was there though they had a pool and the second time he went to Freedom Rest and they had a pool).
nail polish ... a small light way to feel pretty
are all things she may need from time to time, again it depends on her PX.
A doll, pictures, letters, perhaps a small quilt?
Hubby has done two tours there now and these are the things he requested the most (other than the doll,nail polish and hygeine itmes obviously!;)
The first time Hubby was in Korea I took rolls of pictures........so much easier now with digital! Besides the blog you might just send her photos from time to time and/or make an actual scrapbook for when she returns.

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear.......dh is home at present but he has been to Iraq twice. My cousin is downrange with the Marine Reserves, but I was just replying and trying to be helpful with a list from experience.

How sad she has to leave her baby girl. How sad she has to go in the first place. God bless all of them, they leave their homes, families, states and country. I pray every night for their safety and QUICK return. I wish I knew about what they can have but other then the internet, I don't know.
