I just saw this video today...I've seen other stuff like this before, and I just can't grasp what kind of people these are. What happens to a person that makes them act like this to animals? As already mentioned, what is there interaction with other people like? I think it's pretty scary... I love my cows..can't imagine this kind of behavior.

A little more coming out now about this "former employee"...apparently, he was signed up for the Franklin County Police Cadet program, and that further "legal action against him" could ruin his career prospects. I'm thinking that a police force might just want to do some more mental screening on this guy before they'd commit...I mean, just what we want...a person like this walking around with a weapon and an obvious power trip. He admitted to the Dept. of Agriculture's investigators that he "enjoyed" doing what he did, kicking, maming, harming. He found it "fun" (this from Channel 10, Columbus).

I watched this video an signed the petition. I feel this guy who mainly was the video was evil! He has issues and needs to be put away!
I am still seeing the video in my head, I AM SICKENED over it!

OK girls. My husband and I are dairy farmers. We both were appalled by this. There is no reason for cruelty like this. On the video, they were harming these animals because they had mastitis and wouldn't go into the milking parlor. Well, the main reasons for mastitis is from extreme stress, trauma and bacteria. Well we all know 2 of the 3 were present on this farm.
However, this kind of thing truly ruins this profesion for us. We work hard for our animals to keep them happy and healthy. We work hard for you to give you a quality product. So now everyone is blaming the whole dairy industry for this one farm's actions. So before you blame the whole industry....research your local coop and large dairy purchasing companies. We looked into our coop to make sure that it was not them buying this farm's milk.
So please be aware this is an extreme case and not to blame everyone. BUT we do need to raise the roof to have THIS farm shut out of the dairy industry.
Our state inspections are very intensive, apparently they aren't so tough in Ohio. My husband, myself and out whole family has signed this petition and I encourage everyonr to do the same.

Thanks Angela for signing the petition. I know that most dairy farmer's treat their animals with care and respect. There is always a few bad apples that spoil the whole bunch. I know my co-op buys from local dairies that are kind to their animals. It only makes sense to take care of them, it's your livelyhood. Apparently happy cows don't come from Ohio. These abusers are boils on humanity and should be punished to the extent of the law and not allowed to ever have animals of any kind ever again.

Ugg...do not get me started on this. And people wonder why I'm a vegetarian.
Truth be told, I have no problem with people that eat animal products but I realllllly wish people would actively LEARN about where their food comes from and DEMAND more stringent laws on how farm animal are treated in this country. And, no, don't think that some form of this abuse isn't happening somewhere else. Maybe not quite as dramatic, but don't think this is any less worse than the factory farms GRINDING up male chicks or gassing male ducklings (both documented in videotapes at various factory farms). Downed animals? Battery Cages? Do we really suck this bad at animal care? Folks, time to wake up and smell the coffee, and tell the government and big corporations that make products from these so-called "farms" to support humane and ethical treatment of YOUR FOOD! <Ok, off my soapbox now>

I could never watch the video, just the descriptions are disturbing enough for me. But I will surely sign the petition. No punishment will be severe enough for those people.

The local tri state paper "Farm and Dairy" reported that the man plead not guilty to mishandling a firearm in a vehicle and is expected to plead not guilty to 12 charges of animal cruelty. The firearm charge is the more severe charge. Can you believe that. They are also saying the people who made the video should be scrutinized because it took them a month to come forward with it. This tri-state area is so backwards when it comes to this type of thing. Two weeks ago the "farm and Dairy" wanted its readers to boycott a burrito place because they are advertising they will be getting their meats from farmers who use ethical treatment. Since when is a well cared for animal a bad thing. They also support gestation crates and want you to boycott Yellowtail wine because they are giving a portion of their profits to the Humane Society of America. I would bet this guy goes to jail for the Firearm charge and gets probation for the animal cruelty. It makes me very sad.

Jane...I live in the Cincinnati area (and my grandparents are from Columbus) so I've been checking in on this story weekly. Since animal cruelty charges are NOT felonies in Ohio (they're working on that with the alpaca beating case in Butler County), he will get next to nothing for the animal cruelty--and the OWNER of the farm, Gary Conklin, who is also seen on the video acting similarly, has not been charged. As I understand it, he's very well connected in the community, and they will go after this idiot, as a sacrificial lamb, so to speak. He will get more on the gun charge--and honestly, that's fine with me. It's how they got Al Capone--tax evasion. Not murder. I figure, whatever way you can get this person in to jail...while I am furious that animals don't rate in our country, I am happy to see him get SOMETHING.
One of the Mennonite cheese producers dropped their contract (and made a media announcement that they were doing so)with Conklin Farms and I wrote to them to thank them--when I travel to Plain City, I always buy their products, but would not, now that I know Conklin Dairies provide them all milk products to produce their cheeses....and I made sure to state as much.
We consumers are savvy, savvy, folks--there are far more people who WILL buy products that promote a cause than those of us who won't (especially when the cause is one we believe in). I pride myself on being responsible--to my earth, to me, to my family and to my animals. I won't buy anything that I don't feel comfortable with, down to the way it's made to the way it's packaged, and if there's a boon (such as a donation to animal welfare orgs. or what have you), even if there's a higher cost, I'll buy that product.

Jonni, See this is why I hate "Farm and Dairy" They are reporting that Gary Conklin knew nothing about what was happening on the farm. I of course can not watch the video so I didn't know he was on it also. Oh it just keeps getting worse.

I read another article by another Dairy publication blaming Mercy for Animals, and also suggesting it was a conspiracy--that the person filming was as much to blame for letting the abuse go on (like, I suppose DEA officers embedded and infiltrating gangs are responsible for killings that happen when they're playing gang-banger for an investigation) or that this idiot was merely a plant by Mercy because he appears to do things "for" the camera...The article goes on to say that we should examine the "motives" and agenda for Mercy filming in the first place (their vegan agenda which would turn people from eating *gasp* dairy products)...Sure. The abuse filmed is SECONDARY to their agenda...
Look...I used to be a vegetarian--for 10 years. I eat meat, though not much, but what I do consume, I consume responsibly. I KNOW my food source--and I'm a far happier consumer.
