My vet came out today and preg checked Mona..since she is SOOO late calving. She isn't and never was pregnant this year. crud! He did say she is all kinds of fat though. He said she looks like a steer. Well thanks a heap guy..haha. Actually he was very nice and said it happens to everyone sometimes and that since she is the only cow it happens that they are quiet during their heats and I didn't catch that she went back in season after the breeding. He was pretty amazed at the belly on her but said she seems very healthy and like a nice cow. Yep. I Knew that! So....I plan to get her bred ASAP and we will have to wait for next spring for a calf now. I am not too peppy after that news. As long as she is okay I can get over the dissapointment..but geeesh! My kids go through 2 gallons of milk each and every day.

OH Jenny.. what a bummer. But tell Mona that all us girls can relate to being "all kinds of fat". Give her a cookie for me.
& oh my GOODNESS!!! Summer is a beauty. How proud you must be!
Miss you!

I haven't been on here much this summer, and when I saw the title of this topic, I thought something was seriously wrong with Mona. Whew! Boy, do I feel relieved. And the vet knows what we all know. Mona is a very, very nice cow, indeed! :) Only a man would tell a girl she's
"all kinds of fat". :( What ever happened to 'pleasingly plump'?

No way! What a bummer. I can just imagine how you feel right now and I am so sorry. It is pretty hard to tell when "the moment" hits a cow by itself. The only way I know is I have 2. Well shoot. And that vet should be a comedian on the side. Pretty funny guy.

How dissapointing!!! But on the bright side Mona is happy, healthy and able to try again. I guess you kids will have to drink more water or how about beet juice??? Give Mona and yourself a hug and a piece of chocolate would help in times like these or maybe a big bowl of icecream.....with chocolate syrup and many many cherries on top.

okay, i am really agreeing with the post from janice and grace.
i am really glad your vet isnt my doc, cause i think he could say almost the same thing about me.
since my chemo, i have grown back my hair but i have no eyebrows ( or breast). i feel obligated to wear earrings so folks will know i am a girl. i have had a few people call me sir until they hear me talk and then they get so embarrased and apologetic.i really do miss all my parts some days, but i mostly miss my eyebrows cause i think i look alot like a geico without them.
anyway, aunt jenny, i am so relieved that mona is ok.
i hope you will soon be your peppy self again.

Well those things happen. Might be a good idea to put the girl on a diet. Help with conception and calving. Did your vet give you an idea of where she is in her cycle?

Best wishes

Oh Rats!! This gets me to thinking about my cow, "Betty". She has had silent heats also. We took her to the neighbors farm to get bred, but how do you if she is, without having a vet come out?? She is getting plenty fat, but not due until Nov.

Gena- you could try renting a dopplar from a medical supply place and trying to find a heartbeat in the uterus?

Oh, Jenny. I'm so sorry! I KNOW how wonderful Mona's calves are (having one myself!), and dang, that's a lot of milk to purchase until she freshens. I'm planning on breeding Evelynn in August - on the bright side, perhaps they'll calve at a similar time next year? You know - I would like to "third" the advice on ice cream, chocolate and cherries. Durn.....

XOXO, Libbie

gena i hope your cow is bred. i am still waiting here for calves. gads so tired of waiting. wish i had a date. pasture bred for all 3 girls. isabel is the only one ai-d and i know her date. i will do tail bleeds next year and send them to lab to confirm pregnancy. i hate this waiting stuff. all seem healthy just late.happy days sherrye

Does anyone know when the cow starts looking pregnant? She really is getting bigger, but she is not due until November. Hubby says she is just fat. Do they commonly have twins?
Sherrye, I know what you mean. It is nerve racking when you don't know when they are due!

gena, there is the dilemma. if we could know then we would not need the tail bleed. i thought i saw the baby kick in maddie. now i am wondering if she is bred. so she is in with the bull. congratulations on your cow being bred. thats the big start.lol happy days sherrye
