don't go together around here. There is a family up the road shooting off all kinds of fireworks and my goats, dogs and heifer Roxie are all scared of them. Sophie and Bubba are in the house. Zoe can't hear them anymore thank goodness. She and Shophie will be 13 July 7th. But Sophie can hear them. And she was just a shaking and begging to come inside. The goats and cow would come in to if I let them. There were some really loud ones going off. And this is just Friday. We still have a few more days to go.

Its called bad news around here! All 10 animals around here go crazy! Our dog hides in the bathroom now the hall, rabbits go to the very corners of their hutches and shake, goats, well lets just not go there, and the cat starts to shake and meow alot.
Sorry you are going through this too Kristin. Lets all pray that our animals have a good 4th of July.
Hugs,
Channah

Kris, I hear you. My dearest swedish warmblood mare, Octave is so upset, and my %#^@*&^@ redneck neighbors are out shooting bottle rockets not 20 ft from my barn. My little 2 yo andalusian filly, Em, is upset because the mare is upset. I cant wait for school to start, if I see those kids throwing anymore crap in my pasture Im going to go crazy.

Oh I really hate this holiday for just this reason. Mine started with the drunken rednecks racing up my very steep road and lossing control of their SUV and rolling into my windbreak and taking a chunck of fence out. They where so drunk they could hardly stand up when they got out. I was so scared that the vehicle would catch on fire and with the horrible heat and dry winds it is prime. Now I stand guard for the red neck neighbors who every year shoot off all sorts of fireworks and I spend my night trying to calm down animals and have also the hoses ready just in case. Just once I would like to get thru this holiday in peace... Another 4th spent sleepless in the barns with scared to pieces animals... I would like to strap their butts to a rocket and light it.

Grace and Sarah, that is awful. I cannot imagine going through all that. I guess we have it pretty good here compared to ya'll with the drunks. Grace, did you call the police? I hope you were both able to keep your poor animals calmed. Horses really get nervous and I bet it's harder to calm them down.

I sure would like to have all the money these people spent on fireworks. We have never bought any. I think it's a waste of money myself. I could use it soemwhere else besides being blown to nothing. But thank goodness it's only a few days.

I hope all the critters are ok this morning. And all Channah's too. And it has been dry here lately. So there is always that fear of fire too. I don't think people think about things like fire when they are doing the fireworks. But we have a little fire department less than a mile away. I have always felt more safe knowing that. Are there any near you out there in the desert, Sherry?

I will be thinking about all of you this weekend. Maybe some nice thick ear muffs would work?

good morning girls, kris we do have a fire station not too far off. we did have a fire here from fire crackers a few years back. when i told papa rather loudly there was a tree on fire he laughed. he thought i was fooling him. the neighbors had company and the kids were playing with crackers. papa put it out fast. just a charred tree. so far its been quiet here except a few fast loud cars. hope it stays quiet for you all. so sorry your fence was broken down grace. hope that is all that happens. have a fine farm day girls happy days sherrye

Sherry, paople just don't seem to think of fires when they are having fun. I'm glad it was a small fire and ya'll were able to put it out.

Channah, it will be over soon and back to normal again. I hope!

Well, the rednecks are hard at work. *sigh* my horses are in a panic. I supposed this means I cant safely take my son to see fireworks tomorrow if they are this bad tonight.

Oh, I feel so sorry for your animals that don't like the snap, boom, pops! My cat used to hate them too and would curl up under the bed for three days around the 4th. I hope you and they survive without any serious trouble or fires!

Kids in my neighborhood have been setting fireworks off, too. All day yesterday while I was working in my yard and quite a few last night. My parakeets Ollie and Mollie didn't like the M-80 that went off yesterday afternoon, but they do get a thrill out of the smaller ones - especially the screechy ones. They get up on top of their cage and sing, goof off and have a ball. Last night after dark when they were in bed with their blanky on, some screechy ones went off. They started singing in the dark! So entertaining!

Fireworks are banned in the cities around here because of so many house fires in recent years, but we are still unincorporated so they are allowed in my neighborhood. People come here from other places and use our streets for their blasting pleasure then leave the mess for us to clean up. Fortunately the fire station is less than half a mile away. We have several indian reservations nearby, so there are always tons of illegal fireworks going off. I wish they would outlaw them except for public displays. Nothing like an old fashioned community gathering with food, music, fellowship and a final hurrah of beautiful fireworks!

Cheers! ~ Marilyn

Unbelievable. THey started at 8 am this morning, 2 of my horses refused their breakfast and one has explosive diarrhea. So I suppose colic is a fun possibility for me to deal with later. BAH!

Sarah, what do you do about that? Those poor horses. Can you put something over their ears so it won't be so loud to them? I'm so sorry they are having such a hard time with this. I just wonder if the police could get involved. Maybe they've shot them all off by now and are all done. I hope you get your horses back to normal soon.

Marilyn, that's funny that the birds don't mind the noise. I'm glad they don't. I really don't know how people can spend all that money on something that just last a few seconds.

I think my neighbore used all theirs up Friday night. I didn't hear any last night at all.

Oh Sarah I am so sorry for your sweet horses.. I sat in my barn with my goats last night because of the little one's being so worried. I too can not understand in this economy why folks would waste their hard earned money for little stuff when they could go to tons of free big displays.... I hope everyone has a calm rest of the day and night - I am praying for a huge rain to keep everyone in their homes around here.

One thing I do give my animals is Rescue Remedy which always helps.

They do have cotton balls made for horses stuffed in their ears as of last evening, thankfully I used to do some jumping and I had them. I tried to give them some calming herbs that I use on my stallion sometimes with valerian etc. Unfortunately it doesnt come in a paste form and the ones that need it are not interested in even eating their grain at this point. We are having a reprieve for the last hour or so, hopefully it doesnt get too bad tonight... Thanks for the kind words, didnt mean to take over your thread Kris. :)

Channah, it's a good thing you found your dog. Poor thing. That is a shame people don't even think about animals.

Sarah, I do not mind at all. After I posted this there were no more fireworks to speak of around here. That's what I like about being way in the "outback". Not many people out here. Sometimes the people who we have never seen, but hear sometimes, that live about a field over from us, shoot guns. But that's about it. So I guess we are very fortunate. I am so sorry you leve near such thoughtless people. I hope you have a peaceful night tonight.

When I went down to check on the animals in the barn, at dark, both of my dogs scooted through the gate with me, since I could see everyone had put themselves up, I let the girls come with me. It was the first time they did not attempt to chase any of the poultry or goats. As I closed gates LeaLou stayed right beside me whimpering with her eats clamped close to her head, little Lucy kept looking where the noise was coming from and stayed close but made no noise. Prine our 2 week-old buckling was hiding under his mamma and grandmamma's bellies. Both does ate, but were very jittery. Big Al kept tossig his head every time another boom went off. All of the poultry was on their roosts huddled together. I know I loved fireworks when I was kid, but I think it is time for firewoarks to be more strictly regulated, people are not as careful was we were 40 years ago, and not as polite either, I was still hearing them after 1 A.M. I think now if you want to see fireworks you should go to a public display. Because there are too many reckless people out there.

When you free your mind your heart can fly. Farmgirl # 714,

We had the same problem here. People over the hill were shooting off morters. My dogs and goats were freaking out. Toby our dog spent most of the night hiding in the basement. I ran a fan trying to muffle the noise. Kept the goat barn fan on high all night trying to keep the pyrenese calm and the goats. I am glad its over.
