I'm just wondering if anybody has any sage advice for me. We have a 3 yr old male Yorkie. He sleeps in bed with us. 99.9% of the time we don't even know he's there. Last night around 2am he started getting really anxious, panting, shaking & running around the room. He never barked or whined. Thinking he needed to go out, I let him outside. Back in bed, his behavior was still anxious. He wanted to be right close to me, on top of me, on my head. Not him at all. He kept looking towards the bedroom window. It was the first night with our window a/c in & I thought the new environment was upsetting him so I shut the a/c off. It didn't help. I thought I heard a noise, got up to see. He came with me. He would step when I stepped, always staying right between my feet as I walked through the house(not normal for him). He was glued to me. He was shaking & panting so hard I was afraid he was going to scare himself right into a heart attack. Finally, nearing 4am, I gave him some of his pain killer (left over from injuries as a stray) because I remembered that it made him sleepy. That quickly did the trick & he finally went to sleep. He seems to be normal this morning. Has anybody ever had a very scared dog for no apparent reason? I don't believe he was sick or in pain. He seemed very bothered by an outside source. I just don't know what it was.

Let me also mention that we live in town where we might get just an occasional skunk or racoon but nothing major. Also, we have another dog, a small chiwawa mix who also sleeps in bed with us & barks when the wind blows. If something were outside or in the house, she would have been barking. She slept through his whole ordeal.

Fourth of July night I spent with my pooch trying to calm her down because of all the illegal fireworks that were being set off. She does this every year. I would also like to know what would calm her down. When the main fireworks display was over, I put her leash on her and held it while I went to sleep. She finally calmed down about 1 a.m. But she was panting, shaking, and her heart was racing. I don't know what to do for her either.

It probably was fireworks...even if we can't hear them, dogs can. Hopefully it is over now. Rescue Remedy for dogs really helps-you can usually find it at health food stores or online.
Age only matters if you are wine or cheese.

Poor guy! We have a 115 lb. German Shepherd who is terrified of storms--and can sense one coming 2-3 days before, even if they never evolve into more than rain by the time they get to our atmosphere...it's likely that your poor pup sensed something malevolent that you just can't comprehend. I do believe in animals abilities to be "proactive" for their survival....

One night when my dog was about a year and a half she woke me up in the middle of the night acting whiney and upset. We lived in town. I tried to get her to lay down and go back to sleep, but she acted like she needed out so I finally got up (3am!) to let her out. As soon as I opened the door, Sky started barking and racing forward and then retreating. I peered into the dark and sure enough a skunk was lumbering through the yard. I grabbed the dog and yanked her back inside so fast!

Sometimes animals can sense things that we can't. It almost sounded like someone was outside your house but maybe not. I'm glad he's ok this morning.

you may have had a restles spirit passing thru, dogs are very sensitive to them, some more sensitive than others.

Thanks all! Dogs are funny creatures, aren't they? ;) I'm going to look into that Rescue Remedy that Diane suggested. I do believe that they have a 6th sense about many things. How many stories have we heard about dogs sensing when their owner is on the verge of a seizure or when the dog sniffs out cancer in their owner. I even said that to my husband last night when this was going on. I was a bit spooked that something was about to happen to me since the dog was all over me and not my husband. Teresa, your reply has given me goosebumps. I do believe they can sense spirits. This was another one of my thoughts last night when he wouldn't settle down. I did pray over our room, the house and my family, trying to cover all the bases. We'll see what tonight brings....hopefully, restful sleep!!!
