WE got a little Dexter steer today..as a friend for Mona, but also a "heat detector". She really needs another cow nearby for us to be able to tell when she is in heat. He is very stunted in growth..even for a mini-cow! We got him from some young shirt tail relatives. He is a year old and is the size of one of Mona's 2 week old calves!! I am pretty sure she thinks he IS a calf. They are getting along fine. We are still trying to think of just the right name for him. There are pictures on my blog...I would sure love suggestions for names. I always name my animals unique "people names". Usually names you hear more often on older folks..but not always. So if you can think of any old guy names for a small black steer with a sweet face I would love to hear them!! Check out the pictures! Keep in mind that Mona is NOT a big cow.

oh jenny he is so cute. i just love dexters. he looks fairly tame. i guess his name is not dinner or edible. thats what ours are called. so he is a pasture mate for mona? wow lucky steer. are you then not going to eat him. he is so little. how cute is that. i will ask papa about names. he is better at it than me. happy days for you and steer no name.lol sherrye

Congrats Aunt Jenny! I'm getting a bull for my girls too. Some of the names suggested for mine had to YELL WELL. I'm leaning towards Milky Way since my girl's name is Chocolate. But here's a few:

Desmond (good match for Mona)

Shelldunn (definitely yells well)

How fun!! I love those names..leaning toward Jasper or Vinnie.( I like Leo too) The kids have some off the wall ideas for sure..the boys once named a goat Thumbtack and Libbie ended up with a ram lamb they named Annekin. (she changed his name to Clyde)my 14 year old son thinks we should name him Mario. hmmmm..no. This little steer is the son of Libbie's former Dexter cow named Bridget!! My nephew has that cow and this is her calf...so it is all in the farmgirl family! I agree that names have to yell well!!
Keep the suggestions coming girls...I am having the hardest time with this one.
getting a new ram lamb tomorrow..but he will be named Curly...that was easy. Curly after the cowboy in "City Slickers"..not the stooge.

I love that name Jessie...unfortunatly I had a basset hound named Edgar..he died a few years ago..can't use that name. It would be a good one though!!! Thanks!

Jenny, that is the smallest one year old steer I have ever seen! I think Tiny Tim is a great name for him. Will he get any bigger than that? And Mona looks happy to have another cow around. Maybe this will put her in "the mood".

How about Roy. My uncle Roy had a dairy farm many many years ago and that name has always sounded very "farm" to me and Roy Rogers was a cowboy.

I love the name Roy too!! I was thinking a cowboy name would be good. Hmmmm...it sure is a hard one to decide. The kids howled with laughter at the name Tiny Tim but since I have a "sensitive" brother in law named Tim I can't use that name. It WOULD be perfect.
As far as how big he will get... I really don't know..but his growth is for sure stunted...he should be way bigger. He may take a growth sprurt...think 14 year old boy....you never know.
Yes..he will be a pet. The only reason I can think of that he would NOT stay a pet is if he gets mean. I think that would already be happening if it were going to happen so he is safe. He is very sweet and friendly. I plan to get him a calf halter to wear today so he feels like part of the family..haha.

Okay...his name is officially Stewie. Like short for STewart. I got voted out..my favorite was Vinnie and Stewie was the only name everyone agreed on.
Our new little Navajo churro ram lamb is home today too...pictures of this new cutie on my blog now. What a busy couple of days.
Stewie the Steer is fitting in very well. Mona accepted him as part of her "herd" right away. He follows her around like a calf.

OK, Jennie, I am clueless. Can you spell out how he is a heat-detector? I have been thinking a Jersey cow when I retire, Which might be sooner rather than later -- I will need help as my childhood farm experience was with all steers...

Sometimes when a cow is an "only cow"..with no others nearby at all it is nearly impossible to detect when they come in heat. For AI breeding..which I have done for Mona since there are no available Jersey bulls around here and I wouldn't feel good about hauling her and leaving her somewhere anyway. So...trying to catch her heat (which is a very short window of time for standing heat when breeding is successful...like a day or day and 1/2...is really hard. One year it took three breedings to get her bred and last year I didn't get her preg checked and missed that she wasn't pregnant at all...which was truly a bummer. The vet told me that ANY cow around..even a calf or other female...would make her more vocal as they would be able to tell and she would exibit more "cow in heat" behavior. She has been so quiet that I couldn't tell at all the past few years. The first year was easy to tell..she was young and unsettled I guess.
So...just having Stewie here will likely help alot. At least that is my hope. And heck, he is awfully cute even if it doesn't help.

Also when you have 2 cows together they will mount each other. That's a good indication that one's in heat right now. Also they will bellow for about a day. That's how I knew Mazie was in heat. She's stand at the fence and just moo all day. So I got to checking her and sure enough, when she'd moo like that, she'd be in standing heat. The last few times I actually saw her try to mount Roxie. So up the road she went to a bull. And one day I was going to my friend's house. She has 2 Jerseys. Well, I caught them in the "act" and told her and she called our friend the dairy guy and he came and AI'd her right away.
Brenda, good luck on your cow hunt! Let us know when you find her.
I am going to go check out the new lamb now. I am searching for some lambs too. I want eith St. Croix, Katadin or Babydoll.

I would love to get a minnie cow. When the drought hit us we had to sell out Limie's . They were such huge cows. I think he is so cute. Is he a steer or a baby bull? I think they will be best buds for sure.
