| Last week 2 boys went out on a mean streak and shot neighbors cows, trashed mailboxes ( about 15) and shot and ran over one neighbors dog. One mans bull they shot was worth around $1200. One boy was 18 and one 19. They caught them. How cruel.Whats the world coming to? |

We had a man go on a rampage out here about a month or so ago, he had a cross bow and killed 2 dogs (differant ranches) and maimed another, he also shot a cow and her calf, calf was killed, cow had to be euthanized. They caught him thru fingerprints on the bolts, and when they went to his home (in a near by county), they discovered he had killed his entire family. They say kids who torture and kill/maim animals are in the beginnings of becomeing socialpaths/serial killers, so I hope these boys are locked up and receive some very long term therapy...my heart goes out to the owners of the animals killed, what a waste and tragic event for you all to deal with...

Things like that is nearly unbearable for me to grasp! Teresa, I've heard the same thing...that sociopaths begin with animals. Horrible! I'm so sorry for the families and the dear animals. Lin

That is horrible. If they are doing it now it most likely isn't going to stop. Working at a rescue for horses we discovered that most of the abuse animals had owners with a history of abuse. And they tended to get progressively more vicious in their attacks. My heart goes out to those animals that were hurt and the humans that cared for them.

We recently had a guy that was caught after he shot a dog with a bow and arrow. The dog survived after numerous surgeries. My rescue group gathered money for the dog and showed up at the court house for the abuser's trial. They had found out that several other dogs had disappeared in the same vicinity. What is wrong with these people?

At least the kids are adults so they may actually be punished. I wonder how many times before these two kids may have done something similar but no one found out. Very strange world we live in at times.

I hate to hear that kind of crap! I'm glad those no-goods were adults, and I hope they are punished. I, too, feel so sorry for the families involved. How sad.

It really is terrible, and having worked in criminal justice and the forensics fields I can tell you that the number is something like 97% of all adults who kill started with hurting animals as youngsters. I hate to say it, but I'm glad those boys were caught while their victims were just animals. No offense and not to trivialize the lives of the animals lost or the cost both emotional and monetary to the human families of those animals, but those boys could have gotten away with it and in a few years ended up like the man in Teresa's post - killing people. I hope they get the max that the law will allow and hopefully they are still young enough to be helped. Recidivism rates are high for people with no aversion to hurting living things, but maybe they were caught early enough to learn. So sad.

| That is horrible! I have been thinking a lot about this subject area after doing a week of jury duty. I just wonder why there are not early interventions before children are so far gone to be able to commit these crimes. |

It happens so much more than you know...a few months back, two juveniles and a 22 year old female stole a baby alpaca worth $8k, beat it, put it in the back of their car, drove it around and beat it again until it died, then dumped it. People around here were so outraged, it caused the county prosecutor to seek them being bound over to adult court, as well as seeking an amendment to the "misdemeanor" animal cruelty law to make it a felony.
I'm so sorry this happened...I can't imagine what goes on in these folks heads--how one can equate cruelty with entertainment?

This type of behavior is so abhorrent to me. I just do not understand this type of brutality. The laws in this country need to become stricter to address these issues. A slap on the hand is a slap in the face to the victims. There needs to be a one strike and your out attitude and maybe it would deter these kids. Some of these kids parents need a wake up call. Put them in treatment and jail along with their darling kids and see if that will jolt them! Oh yes, in the same cell. That'll give them some together time.
My prayers to all the victims.
Flood your states Representatives, Congressmen and Senators offices with a request to make these cruelty to animal cases a felony.

I can't comprehend this stuff. I can't even kill mice that make it into the house, I just end up catching them and setting them free. This kind of disregard for life is a sad statement of where our world is going, I'm afraid.

| It is very sad that young people think it's entertainment to maim and kill defenseless animals. Not surprising, though, considering some of the television programs, video games, and movies many of them watch. I work at an inner city elementary school and shudder at some of the home life stories I hear, along with the number of pit bulls in those same homes. What is so valuable they need a pit bull for protection? Students will freely admit during casual conversation that their pit bulls are mean and they're afraid of the dog. |

Teresa (bluebellequilts), it just kills me when you hear about them killer pitbulls that people have living in their homes with their children, I am being a smartass, I have had pits and pit mixes for ever, my kids and grandkids grew up with them, and they ALL have been big babies and super sloppy kissers. They are on my ranch/farm with livestock, other dogs, cats and neighbors, I have never, ever had a proplem with any of them. BUT, yes there are the Gang mentality families who shouldn't have a cockroach for a pet, who do have them, they are not neutered/spayed, socialized properly, no manners or even simple obediance training, no vaccinations, or yearly well dog vet checks. So when these dogs do go off on someone, its tragic, its usually a child, and usually they do not survive. Whos fault is it, the owners, who gets blamed, the dog, and then they are destroyed. Its not the breed, its the owners...

It is more than I can bare....the world can be a very frightening place. I'm outraged by horrific situations like this and I believe "zero tolerance" (kids AND the parents!) is the only way to begin to protect our animals. It's a sick mind that does this kind of thing. Dana, I can relate to what you're saying, I couldn't kill a critter of any kind if my life depended on it! This saddens me deeply.......and Teresa, as you know, I agree exactly with what you said.

I agree it is the owner who is to blame for failing to properly socialize and control his/her dog. I have two friends with pit bulls who are as sweet as can be, but that doesn't mean I want one - I prefer small dogs.
It is the stereotypical Atlanta gang-banger who has a pit bull to go along with his saggy pants, sideways baseball cap and gold chains/teeth. Chances are the dog is taken care of in the same manner as the children - usually not very well. |

What an awlful thing to do to defenless animals. My heart goes out to the owners. I too put some of the blame on the vidieo games and TV kids see. It de-sense-a-tizes (sp?)them. People have no feeling of what is right or wrong. Also the lack of Religion in their lives. Religion teaches compassion and respect and alot of children (and adults)are missing it.
Teresa (1badmammawolf)thank you for coming to the defense of pitbulls, Pitbulls, like any dog, can and DO make great family dogs. It's all how they are raised. We have one my son brought home as a puppy, and at first I had the same fear most people have when they hear "pitbull" but what a MUSH he is. |

Liz...you are exactly right. Last Sunday my pastor brought up a point I hadn't thought about. He said that all these games with all the killing make the kids have unrealistic ideas about death. They are so desensitized that they don't perceive death to be real. What a self indulgent world we live in...me me me more more more. We should all care about and encourage others but it needs to be taught in order for it to be done.
I had a Rottweiler...another feared dog. He was 140 lbs of pure love and sweetness. Our GD used to lay on him and drink her bottle. She wanted to be there and he wanted her there. I would have never put her in harms way. He died of cancer. We gave him chemo to no avail. Never would I do that again. I miss him and always will. RIP Bruno. Our Insurance co. tried to cancel us because one day one of their employees came to do a walk around to see the property and came unannounced. He was measuring the deck and was bending down and came around the corner to where Bruno was sleeping on the screened in porch. Bruno got up and was barking and growling so he said he was vicious. Needless to say we didn't lose our insurance and the rates didn't go up. We told them their guy was snooping around our house unannounced and our property is posted No Tresspassing. The guy turned white as a sheet! ROFLOL. I bet he never went on any surprise visits again!

| I almost feel guilty for posting a topic that was so depressing and negative. But it is out there and we cant stick our heads in the sand and ignore it. Darlene thank you for your post. Your pastor has a valid point. I cant comment on t.v. today fairly because we choose to raise our kids with dvd sets of the shows we grew up with like the Waltons etc.No cable or satalite t.v. in our home. I hear its gotten way out of hand and can see where the desensitizing would come in. |
