On Tuesday, July 5th, my husband and I have to drive to Portland (4+ hours away)so that he can have surgery on the 6th. His foot has collapsed and the surgeon hopes to rebuild it with lots of pins and plates. But, he has clearly stated that once he gets into his foot he may find there is not enough "foot" left to work with in which case he will lose his foot. Assuming they save his foot, he will be spending the next 12 weeks in bed with his foot higher than his heart and he will be doing that at home with me as his nurse. After that he will still require two different casts and it will take over five months before he will be able to walk on it again and at this point we are not sure when he can go back to work. I only work part time so this will be an interesting 5+ months in our lives!

Normally I never worry about things like this as we have survived "damn near everything" and I've nursed plenty of family members but this time I am very worried and concerned. So I ask that you all keep us in your prayers.

When it rains here it pours!

My local support system won't be much help. His sister fell and broke her own ankle in three places a month ago and my closest friend's husband just fell off a ladder and broke his leg in multiple places this past Wednesday. He had to be flown to Bangor (2 hours away) where he will be for weeks if not months having many surgeries. On top of that she doesn't drive outside of our town so she can't visit him much and she has a son at home who has a feeding tube in his stomach. My own family lives 1000 miles or more away and none can come here to help me. I feel like I"m in a soap opera at this point! Never say "it can't get any worse" because this is a perfect example that it can!

So please keep my husband, David, in your prayers. We can use all the good thoughts we can get this time around!

Thank you all kindly ahead of time!

Oh Ginny - I am sending healing prayers for your husband and strength for you during this time... I wished you where near for I would help but know that I am there for you in spirit (I know that is not going to get the physical work done) and please keep us informed if it works for you and we can at least be an ear and shoulder for you.

Love, Light and Prayers coming your way.

I'm praying for you & your husband that his surgery will be a success, with the doctor finding enough foot to rebuild. I pray that your community rallies around you and surprises you with their generosity & care during this trying time.

Ginny, I will be praying for you and your husband. I do hope they can repair his foot and he is up and at it real soon. And I will pray for strength for you to get through this also. Most of the time it is harder on the caregiver than the patient. How did he hurt his foot? My hubby is diabetic and has neuropathy in his feet. He cannot feel a thing in either foot and almost to his knees. I am afraid something like this will happen to him one day.

Sending hugs and prayers your way.

I'm praying Ginny! Praying that your husband wouldn't even need surgery and that the Lord would heal him. I am also praying for comfort and peace in your hearts as you go through this.

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!! I am spending today just getting ready to go and getting things done at home that may not get done otherwise while David is at work getting as much as he can organized for others to do his job. When we are in Portland I will have our daughter around since she lives there but she can't take off time from a new job to come home nor would I want her to. And we can't stay with her because she lives on the third floor of an old Victorian home and David can't climb the stairs to well with a cast on and after surgery he can't even let it touch the ground or we have to go back to the surgeon. I guess it is that delicate of an operation.

I am hoping our community will help out but you never know. Most folks think we are the strong ones because we are always helping someone, involved in town affairs, and always working silently in the background. But for the first time I don't feel very strong. In fact my friend Anna, whose husband is the one in Eastern Maine Medical in Bangor (and BTW turned me on to MJF) called me all panicked the other day and after I listened, helped organize her thoughts and what she has to do, and calmed her down, I reminided her that I am about to be in that situation too. I think it woke her up and I hope in a nice way without feeling guilty or anything because that wasn't my intention.

David is the Assistant Administrator/Program Training Director for our County Jali (over 20 years now), a Mason, President of our Library's Board of Trustees, and I think over all well liked. And he knows just about everyone in the County! We will be in Bangor or Ellsworth shopping and folks come up and say Hi Dave and start talking to him all the time. I know if he doesn't introduce me it is someone who was a "guest" at work but even those guys (and gals) like him because he's fair, treats them with respect, and believes that any of us could end up in jail in a blink of an eye and never know what hit us. So I'm hoping folks will offer a little help to me or at least visit him long enough for me to get grociers or run an errand! Our town is only about 2300 people, a typical New England small town, and the shiretown of our County.

Kristin - I would get your husband looked at, if not getting two opinions, because he should be able to feel his feet. Does he take Lyrica? And make sure he's on a strict diabetic diet even if he does hate it! It will make all the difference in the world! The problem with men is they don't take care of themselves and they put things off which just makes it worse.

David is a diabetic and on insulin and I'm sure this played a role in his foot but last July 4th we were in a couple of different parades and he kept jumping on and off the floats. A day or two later his foot really hurt so he went to our Dr. and he said just put it up so the swelling will go down. Well he did for a month and nothing changed so he went back and the Dr. told him to keep doing it. Another month or two went by and nothing changed. Finally the Dr. had his foot xrayed and said he had fractured a bone, put him in a walking cast for two months and then two months later had him take it off without xraying his foot again. It still hurt and the Dr. said well put it up again but it didn't work. FINALLY this past February he sent him to this specialist in Portland, strictly a foot/ankle surgeon, who said his foot had collapsed. If he had seen David sooner it probably wouldn't be this way, but nothing we can do about it now!

David being the cook at our house, didn't follow his diet well and was a sugar addict, so I know it played a role. He finally got our insurance company to send him to a nutritionist and she gave him a book to look up every food he eats and figure out his carbs. The entire diet is all about controling carbs. Not just carbs like potato's or bread, but all the hidden carbs in food. Now that it makes sense to him he eats much better and when I take over in a couple days he will be on a STRICT diet! But I have nagged and nagged both he and our Dr. for a couple of years because I could see the writing on the wall. It's too bad we aren't the suing kind of people because our primary care physician blew this, but we can't sue him, it's not in our nature.

Anyway, thanks for listening and keeping us in your prayers. I guess I should start a blog since I'm babbling on here!

Ginny - thank you for sharing your world with us and your not babbling - sometimes if we just get it out we can start to see the light. I know what it means to be the one who holds up everyone else and so when it is a time that you are in need most do not even register that you are human. I have been amazed by that fact until I asked for prayers here - the over flow of love, support and kindness was something I had never experienced. It was so overwhelming but also of great assistance and so I offer to you the love and light that those here have also shared with me.

You will both be in my thoughts and prayers. Be Safe on your travel and as I always say to others don't forget to breathe...

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR PRAYERS AND CONCERN!!! We made it through surgery and while we didn't get home as planned, we finally arrived home and he still has two feet for now! I took out all the seats in my van and put a twin air mattress in it for him to lay on for the 4+ hour drive home. He realized he needed to hold onto something so he took his bathrobe belt and tied one end to one seat belt and one to the other seat belt for thosE turns and quick stops! Not sure he liked it but I don't know how else you get some place 4 hours away when your foot can't touch the ground. What an on going experience this is and I've been caretaker once too many times already in my life but maybe because of age or attitude, this time around seems harder. I'm home bound with him for two weeks as he can't be left alone, why I'm not sure, but I follow Dr. orders.

The Dr. said when he opened his foot it was like a hand grenade went off in it. The Dr. put in 13 pins, 3 plates, a donor bone and donor tendon and fused three bones together. Now he stays in bed for 12 weeks before we know if it heals and he has a foot or it didn't heal and they still amputate. I hope it's the first because 12 weeks of my hard work is worth it healing! (Am I selfish or what?)

As caretaker I'm sure many of you know that it is you, that becomes exhausted! :) Doing all my chores, his chores, plus tending to his needs I just don't know why Doctors think the patient should be home! I'm exhausted from being exhausted! He's so drugged up he just watches TV or hangs out on his computer until his pain comes back, then he relizes he had surgery and gets more drugs! So all you diabetics out there FOLLOW YOUR DIET!!!! David did this to himself with jumping on and off floats last July 4th which exasterbated the problem of not following his diet as a diabetic. And he only has himself to blame because up until now, he did all the cooking at our house! I can already feel the pounds coming off me, which I am happy about :)

BTW, I am convinced, from our experience at least, that Obama should turn over all National Health Care to the Catholics and I'm not Catholic! He was in a Catholic Hospital that was so technically superior to anything I've seen in the last 15 years it wasn't funny. AND his room, as were all rooms in the place, was private and I couild stay in there with him if I chose to. I didn't, instead I stayed in a beautiful Victorian home filled with antiques, a stocked kitchen, beautiful plush rooms, that the Catholics run which is like a Ronald McDonald home and paid all of $15.00 a night for it. We couldn't have asked for more caring people, clean and wonderful surroundings, and the food they served in the hospital, get this, off a room service menu, was to die for!! When he was hungrey he simply ordered his food, instead of it coming on a tray all cold because they feed everyone at the same time! I too could order off the room service menu but I had to pay $8.00, which still was a bargain! I hope if I have to go to a hospital it's that one!

Anyway, thank you all for caring, for praying, and for "listening". Time to go start dinner!

I'm glad to hear that David made it through surgery with the chance of saving his foot. Been a caretaker all my life and I know what you mean by exhausted from being exhausted. Please be kind to yourself too. Take every chance you can get to just breathe, drink tea and take a break. Please know that you are in my prayers and so it David. Big hugs to you, Joey

Ginny I am glad you have made it thru the surgery and hospital stay - now comes the rest... I know what it is like to be in that caretaker role and if you do not watch it you will weaken yourself and there is no one to take your place. Let the little things slide - take any help when offered and get rest. Trust me - I did not do those things and pay a high price for it.

I am there for you and if you need a shoulder (which I could offer more) I am here for you. If I was closer you could count of this caregiver to lend a hand.

Blessings to you and Big Big Hugs...

Thank you Joey and Grace! David is doing his best to help with himself so that's a big help to me. But you are right about taking care of yourself, you must do that because no one else is going to step up and do it for you! Thanks for thinking of us, it means a lot!

Joey, when do you come in August? Can't wait to meet you!

David is very blessed to have a honey like you Ginny! I'm glad that things went well with surgery and I am continuing to keep David in prayer for healing. I am also keeping YOU in prayer for strength. It must be so difficult to be a caregiver, not only the physical demands but the emotional end of it as well. Please take care of yourself and get plenty of rest. Do you have any family members, friends or folks from church that could help you? Even if only for an hour to get out of the house. I'm sure that would be refreshing for you. If I lived closer I would gladly help you out.

Thank you so much Sharon! I really appreciate all the prayers. This is going to be a LONG summer and fall. Even though I am here with him, I can't imagine being stuck in bed for months. I love to be busy all the time physically so it would be a challenge to me. None of my family lives anywhere near us, the closest would be 1000 miles away. David only has a sister and her family left in life and she fell and broke her ankle in three places a month or so ago and can't really help us because of it!
