Roseann, You will love your clothesline! I have just started using 1/2 c vinegar as a fabric softener (we have very hard water), I was really skeptical at first, but it really works! I add lavender oil so there is a light scent on the fabric when it dries.

Very funny poem, Bushel n Peck! Sometimes we need to be dropped on our butts. Keep in mind it is not how many times we fall down but how many times we get up that is important. I forgot which witty person said that, but its true. This walking in faith with Jesus (again) takes practice at first. But I am liking it.
I am just squeezing in to this 40's group. In October I will be 50--oh yeah, half a century old! How cool is that?
Yep, 49 years old and learning to be the best I can be. My (second) husband and I have been together 6 years now. He truly is my Beloved. I have 3 children from my previous 23 year marriage, a 28 year old daughter, a 22 year old son and another daughter who is 19. I am so blessed because all of these children love me and we have such fun together. My husband adopted a special needs child in his previous marriage and he is 14. He has Reactive Attachment Disorder, does not love us and is not so fun. But he is getting the help he needs at a great residential treatment center with the hopes that he will have a change of heart, rewire his negative thought patterns and return home.
My husband and I live on a 3 acre farm in rural Virginia, but less than an hour from Richmond. I own and operate Willows Bend Farm, a greenhouse/nursery right here next to our 100 year old Victorian farmhouse. I specialize in Heirloom tomatoes and old fashioned flowers. I just got chickens and ducks a few weeks ago and I am loving them. Unfortunately so does our young dog,Maya, but she is learning that she can't go bowling for duckies. I do allow her to eat with them--she seems to love laying mash for some reason!
Yes, Roseann, you will love your clothesline. One of God's gifts is the smell of sunshine in sheets!
Right now I am reading Simple Abundance by Sarah Ban Breathnach and One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp. Both encourage me to live authentically, fully, with abundance and joy--the way God intended us to live!

It occurred to me as I was pulling the weeds from my walkway flower garden, that empty spaces will be filled in with something. It would be better to plant the empty spaces with something productive and useful. Then I thought of how this is true for our time and our spirits as well. Here's to filling the empty spaces with what I want instead of noxious, invasive, thoughts, words, or weeds!

Thank you Lori. God speaks to us in so many ways. I find weeding very meditative when I finally get around to doing it. Its easier to listen when things are quiet. I guess that is one reason I like working with plants. ;)

I'm not 40 yet but I'm creeping up on it....can I join your group too??? I'm 38. Been married 8 years. Have a five year old and a 3 1/2 year old. I'm a Canuk (Canadian) who married an American. I enjoy gardening and then preserving the bounty. I have Nubian goats and make yoghurt, ice cream, cream cheese etc and I'm trying to teach myself to make cheese and milk soap. I'm homeschooling and loving it. I have chickens and just recently guinea fowl and I want Ancona ducks. Fascinated by spinning and weaving although I've never done it and I'm hoping to learn more about it and get alpacas. Just started with Satin rabbits. Want to raise meat and fur. My goal is to be as self sufficient as I can be and live a simple old fashioned life. I want my children raised farm style knowing how to do for themselves. |

Isn't a good thing to teach our kids how to take care of ourselves. My oldest son once asked me why he needed to learn how to set up a garden. My response to him was that they say that you might pick out a gal just like dear old Mom and your wife might just want a garden, and you will look like a hero in her eyes, knowing how to do it! He smiled and said, yea. hehe

So true Sue. I'm blessed because my daddy is an old time farm boy raised on a stump ranch dirt poor so he knows how to make things work and build it himself. My husband is a farm boy too who knows mechanics, farming, welding etc. One of those that can make things better than the professionals. So when I needed a chicken coop my daddy and my husband built it with our toddler son helping. When my dishwasher quits working and poor little me has to wash dishes by hand (I'm spoilt and I like it that way) my hubby doesn't call in a repair man he fixes it. If something needs to be grown, crop wise, my husband is a genius at it. I don't take my vehicle in to mechanics because my husband can do it all. My areas are preserving food, gardening, livestock, children and natural medicine. I figure if we teach our children everything we know and encourage them to learn more on their own they'll be able to look after themselves and maybe help others along the way. |

I can't agree more with the above posts. I love my hubby! He's talented and very handy too. He's cutting wood now for winter, and I am gathering and preserving everything that I can grow, glean or get really cheap. Wish more folks would get it through their heads that a government that does everything for you can take everything from you!
Kimberly, I think your are close enough to "40" to join us! We can be "40-ish Farm Girls"

AMEN Tracy! I don't want to turn political on anyone but it doesn't take much to end up in a Hitler, Stalin, etc position. We need to know how to take care of ourselves and be thankful for our freedoms. :)

Hi everyone, I'm new to the site and am also new to this online chat forum. I may have accidentally posted something to someones message. It's blank, but if I did and your wondering what the heck?-Sorry!
Anyway, I would love to join the group. I was highly amused and somewhat relieved as I read of some of your daughters moving back in. I have a 23 year old that is moving back in for the 5th time. Two times I had completely redecorated for one of the younger boys so that they could have their own room, only to have to rewind for her. I think I'm losing square feet in that room.
So I have a total of 4 children. 23 year old daughter, 21 year old son, and 12 & 10 year old boys. Life is busy and full but when I can I squeeze in vegi gardening, reading, crafting ect....
So glad to find this forum and looking forward to getting to know some of you. |

I am turning the big 40 in November. This week I really feel it, been planting a lot of trees, but I guess that fact that I am still out there doing what I love, getting dirty and having fun is a good sign :) I always love every one of my B-days, no sadness, I have come through so much! I just stay busy and love my family and life and focus on only the positive, like finding all of you ladies, best part of my year so far!

Yikes... I'm turning 45 in Oct but loving my life. I have 10 hens, 8 dwarf nigerian goats, a horse, 3 dogs, a veggie garden, tons of flowers, fruit trees. No children, divorced for 11 years but have a wonderful man in my life who too puts up with all my ideas. I knit, can, sew and hope to learn soapmaking soon!

I just celebrated #41, I have been mostly positive about my age. I was just reflecting yesterday on the deaths of two of my classmates in the last year. They both died from breast cancer. It's strange how I have become like my parents and grandparents by reading the obits to see whom I have outlived.

It's funny you should mention becoming our parents, I just made that comment to my friend the other day. Her oldest is 17, mine 5 (I got a LATE start). It's just strange to think that she has a son that's the age we were when we were graduating high school together. And how much we have seen and done. The people we have loved and lost. You know you're getting old when...... LOL I thought it was hilarious when the gals that babysat for me were so shocked that I could be their mother age wise. Having such young children people assume you are younger than you are. :)

Hi Everyone, I am new to MJF and this is my first post. I am 44, the mother of 2 grown sons, and have been married to my DH for 26 years. I'm a city girl with a longing for the country. My job is associated with agriculture and so I get reminded of my dream farm daily. Someday I'm going to make that dream a reality. I love to quilt, crochet, and I'm learning how to knit. I look forward to getting to know you all. - Terrie |

Since the over 50's age group is so big, I was excited to discover there are some of us that are over 40.
Tanya, what a pretty name! (Granted, I have a sister name Tanya also, so I may not be completely unbiased.)
I'm 45. I have two kids in college. I'm still thinking I have time to find "Mr. Right" that I can be married to for the next 20-30 years with like so many of you.
For now three horses, two cats, a poodle, and lots of dreams keep me busy. I'm blessed to lucky live on a horse ranch that also has chickens, cows, and more horses than I can count.

I'm 42. I've been married 6 wonderful years and we have a 4 yo boy. Married later in life (36). Started late on the family, but I'd rather have a child with the right man then have any with the wrong man. 30 was hard for me. I cried for 3 days because I was not where I had hoped to be at that age. But, I'm older, wiser and more happy than I ever was back then. Just wish I had more youth to keep up with my son and farm stuff.

I'm almost there and honestly, I'm struggling with it a bit. I'll be turning 40 in March. It's hard for me to face that, but I've got some things planned that I've never done before thanks to an awesome husband and friends. (going sea kayaking, climbing Mount Hood)
I love where my boys are right now, but I'm kind of missing having a little one in the house. My boys are 8, 9 and almost 12. Pretty soon I'll be in my last year without a teenager. Where has the time gone?
Maybe that is what kind of scares me about turning 40. Life just seems to be passing by so quickly and I don't want it to.
It really helps to hear from some of you who are just a couple of years ahead of me. To know it's all right and even great!
So, can I join in even though I'm just not quite there yet?
