Is this kind of like homework? Well my starter is gone now........ We came home and Sophie had a flour covered nose. She had eaten my crock of starter off the counter! She must have stood ON the counter because not a drop was spilled and the crock was still sitting there. Dog gone! Now I have to start over again! jo

I can just imagine her face when she ate it ! I hope she's ok!! My sister came home one day to find her Rottwieler had taken the top off of the peanut butter and had licked a hole all the way to the bottom. Yuck. This is the same dog that licked all of the salt off of a dish of nuts and instead of throwing them away, my brother-in-law left them on the counter. Well, later that day, when my sister commented on how unsalty the nuts were............you can just imagine!! :(

Jo, if you need starter, Ronna was sweet enough to send me some and I would be happy to send some of mine to you! It's amazing how innocent they can look - with flour on their noses, even! My two dogs seem to have a partnership. Miss B (the smaller of the two) will put her paws on the counter and drag whatever off. Riley, my huge dane who could easily take anything off any of the counters, then helps her eat it. I think he thinks that it's fair game if it's on the floor LOL! ~~~~

LOL!!! Oh no, not the sourdough starter!
My dog went counter surfing one day and snagged down an unsliced loaf of whole wheat bread. She ate most of it and left a rectangle of matted dough on the familyroom carpet. Yeesh. And once my MIL's dog scarfed down a pound of butter.
And Karin, your brother-in-law is just plain wicked!!! |

When I was a kid our dog ate an ENTIRE turkey, a 1/4 sheet cake and a bag of chocolate kisses! It was thanksgiving and we always made extra food since all the family came down. Well she got into the extra room while we were eating. She was SOOOO sick for about 4 days straight! We had to quarentine her to the basement and the vet said we couldn't give her any food or water. I was afraid to go in the basement for months after that. Always afraid we would find a surprise that my dad had missed during cleanup. Oh yeah we had a drainage pipe in the basement and my dad powerwashed the whole thing with bleach!

I'd be happy to send you some of mine. It's been going strong about ten years now. Not really old, but plenty potent. I could send it out Thursday.
I have a funny non animal story. A friend of my son's practically lived with us during their teen years and the only time he got fed was at my house...so you know he liked it with us. One night, we were all eating dinner in the living room, watching TV. I had cooked broccoli...when he sat down, my son asked what was on it and he said Hollandaise sauce and all of us said ''mom didn't make hollandaise tonite". He had scooped some sourdough starter on his veggies..yuck. He was going to eat it and I told him to go wash it off, he didn't have to eat it. This was the kid who ate dog chow as a little kid more than once, when there was nothing else to eat. I guess buying dog food was more important than feeding the kids...don't to get into that, but I wouldn't let any human or animal go hungry. We still tease him about wanting some sourdough on his broccoli.
Just shows that some kids...and dogs, will eat about anything.

One night when we went to an auction, when we got home the trash was scattered all over the floor. We had won a rottiserie chicken that wasn't very good and I threw it out. Well our little dachsund had smelled that chicken and got in the trash and ate it bones and all. Well needless to say his belly was as round as he was long. We didn't know quite what to do, so we took him out and walked and walked him. He eventually threw up and had quite a bout of diarrhea but he recovered. This was the same dachsund that had been hit by the garbage truck and had a broken leg, and the same dog that thought it was cool to eat rocks and had to have an operation to remove one that was too big to pass. He lived to the ripe old age of fourteen. Bless his heart.

The neat eating must be a lab thing! Our 1/2 lab once ate an entire pot of homemade "beefaroni" from the back burner of the stove. The pot was covered too. When I got back home from soccer I thought my husband had eaten the whole pot! Boy did he get it! He then told me he thought it smelled good and came to find some and the dog was standing at the stove with the pot between her front paws licking it clean! She must have taken the lid off too! This is the same dog that ate a lemon meringue pie and ran around with a big old meringue beard too! No food on the stove or counter anymore. Everything gets hidden in the microwave or fridge! Dogs are very peculiar creatures!

LOL! this is so funny. And it brings back a Christmas memory. We had a huge afghan dog when we were kids. His name was Max, and he got into the fridge and ate a whole ham and some other stuff. Needless to say he was very thirsty for a few days from eating that ham. Dogs are funny! I have one that wouldn't dare even think about it, and the other one that thinks about it all the time!

Okay - my mom used to keep candy canes (still in the wrappers) in a special container on a table in the living room. One night we came home to find our black lab had been taking one at a time and eating them, wrapper and all!! Dogs are funny.

I laughed so much when I saw this post--
Labs are the garbage disposals of the dog world...my husband says our Elie, a black lab, needs a toddler who doesn't like vegetables, so he can sit under the table and eat what the little one doesn't want!
He eats everything. Stuff he finds on the floor, salad, olives, raw broccoli, carrots, cake batter--whatever. Honestly, there hasn't been one thing he won't eat, so we are always on the look out for hazards!
My husky, Lily (she's passed now), ate 4 3-inch thick filet mignons brought as a gift from our friend who was working at this high end butcher--butcher paper and all. She didn't even chew--when I caught her, the last was stuck in her throat because she was eating it so I couldn't take it away from her-- she WASN'T going to give that up!!!!
Just think of all of the roads there are...all of the things I haven't seen....yet. |

Oh my! These stories sound so much like my house! We have a lab mix who eats everthing...with out chewing. Food on the counter, color crayons, little green army men, the vegetable scraps for the goats, the toddlers "dropped" veggies... Now my german shepherd, who could easily scoop anything off the counter he wanted, will not touch anything that is not given to him. I can leave him in the truck with an unwrapped muffin sitting in the console and know that when I return it will be untouched. Toss him a scrap of meat and he will grab it in the air, but leave it on the conter and it is perfectly safe.

Loved reading your notes, finally off work for a few days, have mooses to get out to beemoosie, a check to Kay in Washington and now maybe some starter from Nevada, and I haven't received the cookbook from Diane yet ! We're getting a big neighborhood here!~ My little lab "Bella", we call her "small dog", is eating my canadian teddy bear as we speak!! jo

No ill effects whatsoever, maybe a toot or two, she ate a dozen krispy creme donuts in Seattle a few years back. I fear she craves carbs, especially in the winter! I've had to swear them off this week. I think we're down to less than five hours of daylight, so I have to start exercising like crazy and lay off eating a bit or I start getting a little nutty!! Jo

Yes, sourdough starter will be going to Alaska to Jo's house too. Lots of Nevadans in Alaska and vice versa, so it should be just fine if Sophie doesn't eat it! Had lunch with Cindy Lee today and she said her husband loved the pancakes she made with some of the starter. It is so versatile. Add some...maybe half a cup, to a quick bread or carrot cake recipe and it adds so much to the flavor. It can be that ''secret ingredient'' to make something you bake extra special.

Disaster and hilarity aside, your dog may have needed the live micro-flora thriving in your starter. Commercial dog foods are stripped of such life giving properties. In the future, share a bit of starter with the dog to keep digestion happy. I give my dog yogurt too. And sometimes mix a little kombucha into his food. It is awfully funny when a dog is ambitious enough to get up on a table or counter. The image one of my past dogs is burned into my mind when we all wandered away from the table with half a pizza left on it. Tasha got up on the table, on all fours and ate that thing. We noticed just in time to get a good laugh.

When I was young (back in the 70's or so), my dog Buddy got into our trashcan and ate all the left over liver and onions my mom had thrown away. He laid on the carpet and moaned for nearly a week before he recovered. He should have known that since I wouldn't voluntarily eat the stuff that it had to be nasty (I always hated the texture). Buddy never got in the trash again.
I eventually convinced my mom that any organ that cleans the toxins out of the body probably shouldn't be eaten, but I was gone from home by then.

We used to own 2 Basenjis, the barkless dogs. One day I set potato doughnuts out in the sun to rise, then left on an errand. When I got back several trays were tipped over, and one dog had a bloated stomach. Later, after he threw up, we had yeasty piles out in the yard. These dogs also ate Black Cat fireworks, which came out in their poop.
