What do you think of this idea? We've been asked before but Brian was asked again recently:
"Hi Brian,
Thank you for the reminder. I don't know how I missed the first reminder email but I did. I would flip over nuts if my farmgirl sisterhood membership expired!!!
Is there a lifetime membership available that could be paid one time so I don't have the scare of missing the renewal?
Take care and be blessed."
Many (and I mean many:) years ago I bought a lifetime membership at our local food co-op (probably 1986). It cost $100. An annual membership at the Co-op costs $10. And like our sister above, I've liked it that it's been forever taken care of.
What are your thoughts? I'm all ears.

I like the idea of having that option MaryJane. I've been here a long time and this forum has just become a part of our lives. Everyone in my family knows what I am talking about when I say the forum. They don't have to ask which one because they know it's the farmgirls. Would be nice to not have to remember to do that every year especially as time goes by and the forgetter starts really working well.

I definitely like the idea. This Sister Hood has meant a lot to me. Helped me stay busy and I'm learning new things all the time. But most of all, gaining lots of sisters! Kathleen

I have a feeling for the members it would be great but for your business end it may not be so good. Meaning the first year income would be great for MJF but after that it will be tight making ends meet with staff and hosting expenses and without annual membership renewals coming in, especially down the line. Have you thought of multiple year renewal, like five and ten year?

I agree with Jana. Maybe offer a few different options that people can choose from. That way everyone gets what works best for them. Maybe do a 1 year, 3 year, 5 year, and lifetime. That way even people who don't want to renew every year can purchase a 3 year renewal without spending a bunch a once. It seems large amounts of money at once may be an issue for some, which is understandable.

Hay there,
I thought that was my note to Brian. Mine reads almost the exact same on line one. I think a few years would be great and, if affordable, a lifetime membership would be really cool. I can just imagine my excitement when I receive my annual certificate in the mail without my forgetting to send for it. Whoo hoo!!!

I am sorry Daizy, I didn't mean to take your idea, as a matter of fact my portion was more on why I think a lifetime membership may not be advisable for MJF. Regardless there has been great points made on the subject.

I tend to agree that the lifetime membership would be good for members but not good for business on your end, As rates increase to produce and mail the magazine, the life time members will not have to bear those costs which would hurt you. Also, if the person moves and drifts away from MJF, then you are sending out magazines to an address that may not be current and having to absorb those costs. Practically, i like the idea of a two year or four year option. That seems to be a common pattern for other magazines that I see. It does provide cost benefits from purchasing it at a store, but does not get so far ahead that MJF gets caught in price increases with no way to make up the difference with those lifetime members.

One thing MaryJane's question about Lifetime Sisterhood Membership brought out is how much being part of this wonderful group of like minded women means to us. She values our opinion and we want her to prosper in her business. Whatever membership plan is worked out I have faith that it will benefit us all.

Hey Gals, I like the idea of a 3 year membership. Since I'm going to be 62 soon, my remember-er(is a word, yes?)is getting slower, so to not have to clutter it up too much remembering yearly fees, that's a good 're-member-thing,' right?* giggle* Whew, that was a lot of member-words, I need a nap now!hahaha

Not only does Mary Jane care about us but we also care about Mary Jane and her business. Aren't we just a great bunch of farmgirls?

I like the idea of 3 or say 5 year membership, but lifetime no. It is a kind thought on your part Mary Jane, but I only see it as bad for the future of your business. Several (30+) years ago I started subscribing to a wonderful magazine for people that lived or wanted to live in the country. They had no ads, just big beautiful pictures, receipts, and wonderful articles of interest. It started offering really good subscription rates for 10 years, so I took advantage of the deal. Well within time the magazine began to place ads, the quality of the paper went to a due paper instead of glossy. The general quality changed, I still get it, but I do not enjoy it like I once did. I would not like to see that happen to the Farm. I thank you for thinking of us farm girls and our pockets, but for this farm girl I go for a 3 to 5 year membership. Hugs Karla |

I think I am confused.... Are you talking about offering a lifetime membership to the magazine or to the Sisterhood? I think a lifetime membership to the Sisterhood would be LOVELY, but think an extended membership (such as 3, 5, or 10 year) membership to the magazine would be more advisable from a business spectrum.

That would be wonderful! That way when my finances are settled I could join in and not have to worry about what finances would be like when membership time rolled around again. :)

What about offering "reward" years? Maybe instead of lifetime memberships do a buy 4 get one free or buy 9 get one free kind of thing? You could give them fun names and special certificates.

Weighing in super-late, but I love this idea. I'm terrible at remembering to renew things and have accidentally let my Sisterhood membership lapse a time or two, so I'd be happy to do a lifetime membership!
