Here we are in September ladies. One of my favorite months. October is actually my most favorite one!

I look forward to the cool mornings of September as well as more apple varieties showing up. And as always our Apple Festival over on the main forum.

What makes September special to you?

My dad would have celebrated his 95th birthday tomorrow, the 2nd. His brother's
birthday was today. They were about 8 years apart in age with 3 or 4 siblings in between. I suppose when they had large families there was a good chance of having birthdays close together.

Going to get some windows open and enjoy today's cooler temps.

SEPTEMBER by Helen Hunt Jackson

The golden-rod is yellow;
The corn is turning brown;
The trees in apple orchards
With fruit are bending down.
The gentian’s bluest fringes
Are curling in the sun;
In dusty pods the milkweed
Its hidden silk has spun.
The sedges flaunt their harvest,
In every meadow nook;
And asters by the brook-side
Make asters in the brook.
From dewy lanes at morning
the grapes’ sweet odors rise;
At noon the roads all flutter
With yellow butterflies.
By all these lovely tokens
September days are here,
With summer’s best of weather,
And autumn’s best of cheer.
But none of all this beauty
Which floods the earth and air
Is unto me the secret
Which makes September fair.
‘T is a thing which I remember;
To name it thrills me yet:
One day of one September
I never can forget.

Originally printed in Poems (Roberts Brothers, 1892).
This poem is in the public domain.

Helen Maria Hunt Jackson (1830 - 1885) was born in Amherst, Massachusetts, and was a friend and classmate of Emily Dickinson. Gifted and prolific in all genres, Helen was best known as a passionate defender of Native American rights; one account refers to her as "the most brilliant, impetuous and thoroughly individual woman in her time." She hoped her novel, Ramona, would impact society as much as Uncle Tom's Cabin, a novel written by her friend Harriet Beecher Stowe. Ultimately, it did--though Helen didn't live long enough to realize it; a play based on Ramona has been performed in California every year since 1923. For all her success as a writer, Helen suffered much personal tragedy; she was plagued with poor health for most of her life, lost both parents before she was eighteen, lost her first husband to a war incident, and watched both of her sons die from illness.

Thanks, Denise! Looking forward to getting away for a bit. Bringing 2 quilts to sew on binding, some small cross-stitch Christmas ornaments, and some other ornaments to finish. Was going to bring one of my Featherweight sewing machines and then decided to just bring handwork.

If you open your Sisterhood Issue for this month you will see that several of the apple recipes are from our henhouse. A recipe for muffins from me, Apple Jam and Schmitz pie recipes from Sara, an apple chart from Connie, and a recipe that has been sent to me from Debbie in Colorado (now in the upper northwest). Wow! I feel famous - and I'm not sure how they got there. Did you turn them in Winnie? LOL!!

Linda,
Is this a visit to family or just a getaway? Have only been to Tennessee once back in 1998 for a conference but that was around the Knoxville area. Would love to see some of the part that is not city. My brother has a cabin he built there in the western part of the state. Plans to retire there someday.

Happy September to everyone and a Happy Apple Festival at MJF!!! Yesterday was hot and humid with two rainstorms making it all one big swampy start to Fall!! I was cleaning up my porch area because the roof was cleaned off and all that gutter stuff was one dirty mess on all of my porch furniture!!! So, I spent the day cleaning it all up, sweating through two sets of clothes, AND finally putting up my fall decorations after washing all the pillows and covers. Our open air porch makes it hard to not have the issues of blowing rain and dirt every time it rains. The end of summer here is full of this swampy weather and so keeping things nice and clean outside is a real challenge.

Denise, the poem you shared about September was beautiful and sums up so much of the start of Fall in the more northern lattitudes. I miss that down here in Florida. We do have some elements of fall here in the northern part of the state but it comes very slowly and subtly and does not provide those big changes we see up north. I think the biggest difference that is most missed by me ifs the arrival of cooler temps in September. The weather change was an undeniable signal that change was marching in..

Linda, I did see where your apple recipe was shared in the online magazine and congratulations!! No, I had nothing to do with the text, but MaryJane’s team scans posts on the Chatroom and keeps up with what is being shared in our discussions. When they look for entires for the magazine and the online version, they make sure to always include what Farmgirls are sharing and doing. I love. How we are always included in every publication.

September first was exciting. It was hot! But then I noticed on the Radar that there was some rain in the area. So I talked to God! I asked him for seven inches. Lo and behold we are going to have more than that! Only one problem...we had some bad lightening.so we lost power for 3 and 1/2 hours. We lost the control.panel on the cook stove and a tv.

Connie, you will feel cooler pretty soon. We are cooler today than the super hot of last week.
It has rained off and on this morning. The 80s this week along with the drops of blessing rain...it is just what I needed to refresh my soul! Then in the water shop Monday, I was told we would be in the 70s with night time temps in the 50s long about next Wednesday. Yippie !!! Thank you God!
And the other great news. No more covid! The CDC now says their numbers were wrong! Less than 10,000 folks died from this cold virus. They tried to put fear into the hearts of the public!

Linda, how is your trip going so far? Better weather where you are headed? Sadly, over here in Florida, the "bar " months don't mean much except hurricane season. We rarely see any cool spells until into November. With any luck, it will dry out more in October so it won't as humid every day, but usually the temps are still way up in the 80s. If we do get a front to move through, it is only for a day or two at most. Normally the real chilly weather comes sometime in December. Sometimes. The past few years, it has been very warm in December too. I really have to go up into the mountains of either North Georgia or N.C. to get any real cool weather.Being sandwiched between tow very warm bodies of water, Florida is truly a tropical state in nature.

Judith I think the brrrrr months may make us wish for warm weather again, before it is ready to return.
I'm still hearing about the Grand Solar Minimum! Today I heard someone ask a question...about snow on the Golden Gate bridge...Then he sort of answered his own question...

Anything over 90 is too hot for me.
It was warm again today. Went on a job with JT and met a very sweet woman. We used to do work there when her parents were living, They have both passed away and for the last two years she has been sorting through everything. They owned a horse ranch and so everything had to be sold. She sold the place, and will go to closing on it in 2 weeks. She had to sell all the tractors and equipment, tack and just about everything. I had always wanted to meet her parents but was never able to go down there. I'm glad I got to see it, she took us on a tour, and to meet her. I know her mom was a sweetheart whenever I talked to her on the phone.
We decided on sandwiches for supper tonight. Easy, peasy!
