That’s why I joined your swap for Diary Month so I can have a cow. Just let me know when you will deliver her!

If only we lived closer! You could come help with the feeding all the time. Right now we have a pen with 4 calves in it. It's not so easy to feed 3 bucket calves and a new one on the bottle with only 2 hands LOL!

We had some "fun" the other night. As it seems to go - we just sat down for supper when it seemed the cows were being a little more rambunctious than they should be. We finally had a few nice days in a row without rain and they were able to go out to the pasture. They always run around like little calves after being in the barn for a few days. They should have been calmed down by supper time. When Nathan got up to look out the window he saw a calf running through the neighbors corn field!!!!! Darla must have been tired of being stuck in one place. She broke her chain and went for a run around the neighborhood LOL! Luckily by the time we got our shoes on and got outside she was back in the barn yard and came trotting over to say hi. She was not very happy to find that her run around was over.

This morning instead of the birds waking me up it was the cows. A little after 4am there was a couple of them hollering. I knew it meant that one of the 2 cows we were expecting a calf from had her baby and it ducked under the fence. If it was a cow having trouble calving only one cow would me mooing and it would be an entirely different moo. I tried to ignore it and go back to sleep for a bit. At 5 the birds joined the cows and woke my husband so we went out a little early this morning. Sure enough there was a baby in the tall grass again. Lets see if I can get the picture to work:

Yeah! It worked :) Her real mama is the one laying down - but all the others think they're her mama LOL!
Anyway, we got the baby and all her mama's into the barn. Milked her real mama and went about milking and doing the morning chores. A little while later Nathan came in the parlor from feeding hay and told me the news - mama (her name is Raindrop) went and laid down and had another baby!! Twin heifers. They don't look anything alike. Let's try my luck with another picture:
Nope - now "there's a problem with the resource I'm looking for". The other one is mostly white.
I was thinking of maybe naming them Storm and Cloud or Thunder and Lightning. Not sure yet. Mama is named Raindrop because when she was a baby everytime it would rain she would stick her head out of her hut and try to catch the rain on her tongue. It was funny to watch.

We also had another heifer calf on Memorial day. I was thinking of maybe naming her Liberty. It's getting hard to come up with names without repeating. We didn't name the 14 cows we bought when we started milking but we started naming with number 15 and the twins will be numbers 247 and 248!

Twins!!! How fun!!! I like your name ideas. You've had to come up with a lot of names if you are on 247!

Okay Heather do you want to have a contest for naming one or both of the twins? Let me know.
I am happy to hear you are up at the same time as I am here in Oregon. I am up between 4 and five am on the coast! My Mama Dachshund who is 15 and had Cushings is an early riser!!
I think my friend Debbie Klann is up early too.

Wow Heather, always so much excitement on the farm, especially with twins!
I love your choice of names, but if you want suggestions, my thoughts were
Dewdrop and Snowflake, to stick with the weather theme, lol. Although with 248
previous names, those may already be taken.

Awesome twins! Heather, what fun. Sorry I don'the have name suggestions, I'm terrible at that. It took me forever to come up with a first name for my second daughter. Lol

I'm surprised you ladies are up so early! I don't think I would be if I didn't have to be LOL! Although at this point I'm not sure I could get out of the routine :)

I LOVE the idea of a fun contest to name the twins!!! I'll keep it here at the henhouse not on the main forum. How about we limit it to 3 entries per person (that way if your families want to join the fun they can but I don't get too overwhelmed with names to choose from). Also know that any names you submit may be used for future calves LOL! In the past we had a set twins born that one was black and white and one was red and white - we named them peanut butter and jelly. We also had a set named Marmalade and Maybelline. If you want to know if we've already had a name I'll be happy to check (sadly I can't remember all of them anymore).

Here's a picture of them:

They don't look alike at all LOL! Right now their personalities are pretty much the same except the black one bites! They run around and act like goofballs when it's time to eat. Then they both stuff themselves trying to finish a whole bottle (neither can yet) then they're so full they lay down and take a nap right away. In a few days they'll be more active. I can't wait to see the names everyone comes up with!

They're both girls :)

Interesting fact - with twins when there is one girl and one boy the heifer (girl) is called a freemartin. The hormones from the boy developing mess up the female's reproductive organs. I can't remember the exact percent but 95-97% of the time the girl is not able to get pregnant - therefore she'll never be able to produce milk. I wonder if any other animal is that way? And why isn't it ever the other way around with the males system getting messed up????

Debbie - if it's not too late will you mention our fun little competition in the newsletter? I'll come up with some kind of prize for the winner :)

It's been a crazy last couple days! We had a 3:30am wake up call Friday from another cow LOL! She had a bull calf (pictures coming soon). This weekend we had a break from the rain so we made hay. I was one pooped pup last night and slept amazingly well! I'm a very light sleeper and never sleep through the night but last night I did LOL! Took a nice little break today and went to the lake to eat a sandwich then played a game of putt-putt golf. Nathan won (like usual). Tomorrow the hoof trimmer comes to take care of the heifers that are getting ready to have their babies. Wed or Thur (depending on all this rain coming) we're hoping to go pick a bunch of Strawberries and get the manure spreader welded back together. For now I'm off to evening milking LOL!

Congratulations on the twins Heather! That is so exciting. They are adorable. I have heard about the bull and heifer twins. It’s so crazy to think that’s what happens. Have you ever had boy/ girl twins? I’ll have to think of some potential names. Maybe even get the kids in on it lol! I’ll get back to you with our suggestions.

I miss naming the animals on the farm.

I used to have a dwarf goat. His name was Max. He was a naughty one sometimes.
